Unlike Windows, I am not familiar with Workbench. Currently, I want to partition my hdd (which is said to have been 8Gb by the sender but has 10.5Gb wrote on it). Now, I want to partition it in this way: one partition for Workbench (system category) and another partition for anything else - such as installation of games)
When in the HDTool I selected DEFAULT PARTITION. It split the HDD up into halfs - one partition of ~~ 4Gb and the other of ~~4Gb. The first one was bootable (and consisted of Workbench). The second one was just there. The bootable/workbench partition is currently called HD0: and the second partition is HD1:
However, it is showing as an icon saying HD1:??? - I think I need to format it. Having clicked on HD1 once and then selected FORMAT from the window at the top it started to format it - but it was taking so long just for 1% to be achieved.
Am I doing anything wrong here. Also, I have resorted to my Workbench manual (~~V2) but it does not have anything on partitioning.
So, can someone help me here. Thankyou, 324

Formatting a hard drive does take a long time. You might want to consider quick formatting instead, as this will make the drive available for use without having to format the full partition.

The Amiga by default can only access 4GB hard disks. You therefore require SCSI device patches and an updated filesystem (such as SmartFileSystem) to access 4GB+ hard disks.
If you use the official Amiga SCSI patches you will require Kickstart 3.1 ROMs (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=62).
Alternatively you can use the IDEFIX package with 3.0 ROMs then use an updated FileSystem to access beyond the 4GB such as SmartFileSystem or ProfessionalFileSystem.
Its also recommended to use HDInstTools from Aminet rather than the standard HDToolbox

ok. so this partition cannot QUICK FORMAT because its NOT A VALID DOS DISK
:S

no no - it is formating. just rather slowly. i really should not be so niave - i mean, i reinstall windows nearly every month! i just want everything to work.
lol - i have the three lights missing from my A1200 which is rather annoying. might have to get some from eBay!

You don't need a 4Gb Workbench partition. The most you will ever use for Workbench is around 75Mb maximum - and that's with every possible patch and add-on. (it's not Windows you know ;-))
I suggest you make a 100Mb Workbench partition, then make a 2Gb (exactly) games partition (2Gb is the maximum partition size when using FFS - some programs have problems with partitions > 2Gb). Always quick format. When you run out of space on your 2Gb partition (which won't be any time soon), you can make another 1.9Gb partition and still be under the 4Gb limit. If you still run out of space (highly unlikely), then you can worry about the hassle of partitioning beyond the 4Gb.

here is the problem:
i done what you said:
sorted partitions out:
created a 300Mb, and a 2000Mb.
however, it will destroy data on these both. meaning i have to start from scratch
this means, i need to reinstall WB. however, the WB3.0 disk he gave me DOES NOT work. i have THEREFORE 1 WB3.1 disk, and the rest like Install, Storage are all WB3.0
will this mess things up?
note: obviusly, i havent set those partitions up, i just left it as it was for now

I don't understand your problem. Do you mean that your main Workbench 3.0 disk is defective and you want to use the main Workbench 3.1 disk with the other four 3.0 disks?

yeah thats what i mean. that WAS a problem. but everything is fine now
so, now i have HD0 and HD1
HD1 0% full FFS and INTERNATION checklist were enables on FULL format and TRASHCAN.
this partition is named HD1 and it is actually HD1:
now, i tried installing Theme Park 4 to hd1. but it says READ/WRITE error and i dont know why.
i think it has something to do with Paths. i know NOT the syntax of WBOS
it said at first, Path: and i erased it and typed "HD1:" and thats is, then the error comes up
does anyone know how to install TP4? (AGA)

you can try to change the partitions names to DH0 and DH1.(using HDTOOLBOX)
a lot of applications and games searching for this devices names at install. from workbench you can change the volume names of the partitions to something like: System or Workbench3.x for boot partition, and Work Files Games or whatever you want for the second third and so on partition.

its okay guys. everything is sorted.
HD0 and HD1 are all sorted now. just installed Theme Park AGA (seems as though you need to establish the folder before just typing it in as a path to install lol)
however, i cannot play it as i have BOG STANDARD 2Mb Chip mem lol and the 68k20. (so, have to use the 4 disks which takes an eternity to load lol)
getting an accelerator card soon though!!!
