Title: blizzard ppc200/040 + bvision in stock 1200 case?
Post by: acottrill on April 24, 2006, 11:50:05 PM
Am I asking for trouble with this combo in a stock case?  Anyone done it?  any cooling mods I could do to make it work?

Thanks,
AL

My friend had BPPC + BVision in the original desktop case. He didnt modify anything but left case slightly open. It worked like that for years.

I recommend getting a tower still...

Hi,
I've got a PPC and BVision inside my original A1200, although I've got an 060 which is less hot than an 040 I think. I did add some tweaks to be sure though but it works fine for me still. I bought myself a 2.5" hd, rewired a ground wire, used an extra strong powersupply and directed the 5V line to the floppy connector. I also added a small fan inside the desktop just above the BVision. Oh, and I think I cut some of the metal away to avoid a short circuit.

:)

Have to admitt though that I don't run any 3D games alot, but wipeout works fine. I'm not sure what will happen if I push the limits alot, perhaps it than isn't stable anymore but I just don't have the need. :)

i have pretty much that exact configuration, my only problem is power, i don't have anything at the moment that can push 4.5+ Amps on the 5 Volt line that the PPC needs. the standard 1200PSU i have only pushes 3Amps on the 5V, so she won't even fire up.

anyway...

when i get the power sorted, i do have a heatsink on the 040 from a pentium1, and dirty great fan replacing the standard ppc fan, which pushes a good airflow across the 040 heatsink from the PPC heat spreader. (just leave the cpu slot trapdoor off  )

if you can, i would get a heatsink put on that permedia2 chip too, as it is rated to, and can reach up to 85 degrees celcius  :-o

anyway, as soon as payday hits, i'm getting an 060, a soldering iron (plus a nano ITX PSU). should ease the power requirements and heat issues.
