Title: Would like advice on purchasing large HD for T1200...
Post by: Fester on April 12, 2006, 04:46:56 PM
Hi there,

I'm looking for a large capacity hard drive for a towerized Amiga 1200.

I was thinking of purchasing a 250 or 300 GB ATA and want to know if any old ultra ATA would do.

I intend to install OS 3.5 and I have a Fast ATA 1200SX card and Mediator installed.

I assume my hard drive choice should work, but since I've never done this, I thought I'd ask for your comments first...What should I avoid? What difficulties might I encounter?

You need the latest version of the FastATA software, otherwise HDDs bigger than 136GB won't work. Also more then 136GB won't work on the internal IDE bus (if you ever choose to remove the FastATA).

As the FastATA software is loaded from disk you probably are not able to boot from a partition which crosses the 136GB border. (I am not even sure if you are able to boot from a partition which is outside the first 4GB of the drive).

And of course you need a file system which uses 64bit commands (e.g. SFS, PFS3, FFS V43+).

Bye,
Thomas

Thanks for the information Thomas.

This is definately not my bowl of soup. I'll try purchasing the HD from an Amiga store like Amigakit. The points you made will help me discuss the possibilities with the dealer.

Thanks!
