Ok here is the problem. Ive recently installed a hard drive in my amiga 1200 and it has been working fine for the last week. Ive been installing games on it and having all kinds of fun.
Now, however, when i boot to the hard drive i get a system request box that says "Work has a checksum error on disk block 552383". If i press cancel the warning goes away and everything seems fine, games load as normal etc, but when i go to write anything to the disk i get another message saying
"Volume Work is not validated"
How can i fix this?
Thanks

1. How big is the Work partition?
2. What filesystem are you using on the hard disk?
3. What version of AmigaOS?
4. Did you make sure hard disk activity had stopped before rebooting / powering off?

1. 500mb
2. unknown
3. Workbench 3.0
4. probably not
Thanks

Do you know if your Work partition crosses a 4GB boundary (e.g. starts 3.8GB in to the disk and ends 4.3GB in to the disk)? If so then this is your problem (3.0 and 3.1 using the default filesystem cannot see more than 4GB. If you go above 4GB then it causes corruption).
If you switch off or reboot when data is being written then corruption can occur. You could download DiskSalv from Aminet and try to repair the partition, or you could copy the data to another partition, then format the Work partition, then copy the data back.

or just leave the disk to run the validate process until the end.

Thanks for the help, i will give DiskSalv a try.
The disk is only 500mb in size and is all one partition.
Ive got into a bad habbit of switching the amiga off when i get impatient with it loading, thats most likely what happened.

i will give DiskSalv a try.
no, don't do it. leave the disk to fixed by him self.
if this don't work THEN use the disksalv.
(i hate this program, for me was completly useless all the times i try to use it.)
-edit-
under os3.0/3.1 the best way is quarter back tools

Amije, are you saying it is possible that the disk will fix it self? Is it automatically running a program that i have not noticed?
Thanks
-
yes it is, and of course you can't noticed because it is in rom. it's the diskvalidator once in workbench disk in l: directory. it's just for this purpose. when workbench boot searching for validating problems of any kind of disk and if it's find anything running the handler for the job. if you leave the disk along you will see for a long period the disk light on and the amiga will try to fix it. when the light turns off wait for a while and then reboot. if all gone well it will boot normaly. if not then use any disk salvage program you have.

Thanks, i will remember this next time i mess up the drive, ive already started running disksalv this time though, so i might aswell see it through.
Once again thanks everyone for your help
-
it's not late to stop the damn program :-) and leave nature to do the job :-)
-
ok, i ran disksalv and it got very confusing for me at the end, asking me for directories to save the data to. So ive decided to let the amiga validate itself as advised by amije.
How exactly do i get the amiga to do this? Ive left it sitting for 5 minutes and the hard disk light has not started flashing yet.
I must add that when workbench has booted, and i look at the volume information for the drive, it says "volume is validating" does this mean it is in the process of validating, even though the hard disk light is not illuminated"?
-
you have boot the amiga and what happens? the error message not present? normal way you just power on amiga and the disk start the validading process. you just have to wait until the light goes off.
-
When i boot the amiga, everything is as in my first post at the top of this thread. To further clarify, when the amiga has booted, nothing else happens, the hard disk light does not flash at all, so i dont know if anything is happening to the disk.
thanks
-
but except the cancel button what else exist? what happens if you press the other button?
-
if i press the retry button the same box pops up again with the same question, and again and again etc...
-
but what happens to the disk and the light?
-
The disk light flashes once as the disk is briefly accessed.
-
Problem solved running the repair part of disksalv.
-
I would never use the crappy disk validator that comes w/workbench..whatever its called..
Disksalv is great..saved my arse a few times.
-
because i hate both i install sfs fiew months ago and forget this kind of problems :-)
-
agreed, Disksalv has saved my skin a few times too. however on partitons in the gigabytes it is slow.... not stopped me loosing data too tho. i might have a look at SFS.. can you boot with SFS?

Yep. The filesystem is installed in the RDB of the hard drive, so it's available from cold boot. All partitions can be formatted as SFS including your boot partition.
