Post by: LawlessPPC on April 05, 2006, 09:56:46 PM
My fan on the ppc wont spin I have read in another thread that this could mean the 5V rail is damaged how can i tell if so how can i fix it ppc runs fine but I am concerned. There appears to be no physical damage but is ther something i can test with a multimeter. If so what do i do to sort

If you try to spin the fan by hand will it turn freely? When powerd up does it try to spin? If not the fan is most likely needing replacement.

Put a multimeter across the pins that the fans connect to. If you get 5v then the rail is ok, otherwise it's damaged. If this is the case, then you can just power it off a 5v supply from somewhere else (floppy power connector has 5v in it).

If the power to the fan is ok, then the fan is mechanically faulty. Just replace it with another one the same.

You can check your board revision using the tool "boardtype":

If the fan is faulty we sell new BlizzardPPC replacement fans (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=343)

So it looks like the power line is damaged. You will have to connect the fan to some other source, floppy power connector for example.

Why bother if the card works otherwise? Just power the fan from the 5v supply in the floppy connector.

Have a look on the other side of the board - are ony of
these (http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=t5jgyd) components damaged/missing/burnt?
If so then, to be honest I wouldn't bother trying - SMD solder work on components that small is a real pain in the arse, and the solder pads on the BPPC seem particularly easy to tear.
