Hi
I have been trying to add a buffered IDE interface to my A1200 (see sig). I had it working fine then I started to tidy it up a bit. I rearranged the cabling and thought Id test it before I put the case back togeather. It didnt work, all I got was a black screen. So I disconnected the interface and tried it. Still got a black screen. Not even the floppy was clicking. I disconnected everything (keyboard, floppy drive, accelerator board, mouse, etc) and still get a black screen.
I have removed the shielding and tried it but still only get a black screen. When I touch the chipc after it has been on for about a minute they are all cold apart from the 020 processor on the 1200 which is a little too hot to touch comfortably.
What else could I try? Is my 1200 dead? :-(
Thanks
Robert

:bump:
Anyone?
Thanks

yes, it is.
you could modify your sig.. :egad:
now seriously, have you checked the voltages? esp +5V on chips. AFAIK, besides CPU, Alice should get hot too
-
Hi
Thanks for the reply. Does look like Ill have to modify it!
How would I go about checking the votages? I do have a multimeter, guess thats whats needed. Which one it Alice, btw?
Thanks

well if you're not skilled forget checking voltages, its too easy to short something.
BTW you can find custom chipset pinouts very easily, probably on aminet just search a little.
once you have the pinout, you should connect the red wire to "+5V" or Vcc pin and the black wire to GND. its a bit hard to count all those pins and also set the (digital?) multimeter to something like 20V DC
surprisingly, Alice is the chip labeled as .. "Alice" ;-)
its left to CPU, skipping the missing one.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
That dosent sound like the easiest thing to do. Ill have a look and see how easy it looks. Ill also check to see if Alice gets warm when the 1200 is powered on.
Thanks

Whats the chances that the rest of my hardware, that was attched at the time, still working? Accelerator, ide interface, 3.1 ROMs, harddrive? I only ask as I dont have another 1200 to test it all in.
Thanks

Hi
Ive had a look and I dont think that my skills with a multimeter are up to checking the voltages on the chips. Alice does get slightly warm, not as hot as the 020 but warmer than Gayle (that I think is cold).

why don't you check power supply voltages with multimer, it should be relatively easy.
HDD can be checked in PC esp. laptops.
to be safe: have you waited long enough after disconnecting HDD for bootup?
I'd say the accelerator has good chances.
which cables did you move?
-
Maybe a silly question, but which IDE interface did you try? If Powerflyer, maybe you removed it ROMs and all resulting in a black screen.
Is the Amiga to monitor/TV connection stable?
-
What roms do you have aswell?Just 3.1 rom take ages to boot the machine if no hard drive is attached..

Hi
Thanks for all the replies.
It has 3.1 ROMs and Ive left it on for about 5 minutes without the HDD and still a black screen.
I did check the power supply (called a Power Box, PC PSU in a box like the Gloiath) with my multimeter and it looks fine. Also it will power my A600.
I have tested the SCART cable to my TV with my A600 and it workd fine too.
As for which cables I moved, I swapped round the IDE cables. I had a short one connecting the IDE interface to the 1200 and a longer one connecting the interface to the HDD, and I just swapped them.
This is my IDE interface:
