Title: Aminet
Post by: foleyjo on April 01, 2006, 01:59:02 PM
Has everyone seen Aminets new Workbench 1.3 style format!

They have done a nice job with that one. However they have also annoyed me by saying

"but all Amiga users use WinUAE anyway so it shouldn't be a problem. If you for some weird reason are still using a real Amiga "

Well my weird reason is I cant be bothered waiting for my PC to boot so I can then load in an emulator to use OS3.9 when I can simply press the on switch on my Amigas powersupply and be up in a much shorter space of time.

I once booted my Amiga and PC at the same time and managed a reboot on my Amiga before windows was loaded

Hmmm... It's all gone orange and blue!!!

And there's no substitute for using the REAL hardware!

My eyes!  :-P.

Shame it doesn't fit on a 1024*768 screen...

The design is good, right? ... Yeah, it's really ok. Still - somehow you don't know what to feel about that ram icon up there. :-)) Somewhat dumb too, although now obviously in traffic.

Maybe it's got something to do with today's date?  :-)

Okay, so Aminet has gone retro style now... :-(

I think it was better before the change. Readability is suffering from the low contrast between orange and blue. By the way, the platform icons are missing.

 I'd really appreciate to get the red/white/gray design back, perhaps with retro style as an option for "advanced" users (using browser cookies).

If you have a modern browser like Opera the architectures are shown as text (using the img:after css selector and the content: attr(alt); value.

The width should now be smaller in FF too, unfortunately it doesn't seem the attr(alt) thingy works.

We will improve the looks bit by bit. The non-css version will come out in a fee days.

So now it's better in Firefox... but it's hard to read that tiny text. Bad idea to use a non-proportional font.

Then trying InternetExplorer6... even worse. Huge font, the round black circles in the left menu are shown as rectangles, and the tables with text are aligned way too high (so the borders of the directory windows and the "Aminet" in the upper left corner are covered).

By the way, the graphical "@" symbol is also missing.

PS: Keeping lots of OS4 software during the last months (and only small amounts of 68k software recently uploaded) how can you say that most Aminet users do use WinUAE? Don't you think that OS4 software developers would like a modern place for publishing their software instead of an old-style looking Aminet?

I prefer the old design. Sure, this new one is very "cool" and "retro" but it's not very practical and not so easy on the eyes. I don't think there are any fashionable and hip "retro nerds" in the Amiga community. We are not like those weird fashion freaks running around in Atari t-shirts and playing Pong just because it "cool-and-retro and totally awesome". So we don't really need workbench "themes"  if they are not ALSO practical.

With the old Aminet design there were lots of nice iconic visual cues, for example the "version" icons. I could tell immediately what was of interest for me and my m68k classic A1200. Now I'm having to work hard to SEE what I'm after.

I appretiate the effort of the Aminet team and least they are trying out new things but this new design is not useful for a serious file archieve. Please return the old design! :boohoo:

Also, there is no substitute for REAL hardware - come on! :-)

I like the design, but it's a gimmick that will wear off. It's not as easy to read now.

Yeah, I have to agree with dillinger.  It's a cool idea, but it really doesn't work as well as the previous format.  I imagine quite a lot of work went into it though.  I looked at it in Opera, and the appearance is OK, but still too wide for 1024*768.

In my opinion, the previous layout of aminet was one of the most user friendly sight I have used.  I think all amigans love it.

edit- One can use 'fit to window width' on Opera, which works well for this.  Displaying the page in 'user mode' also works, and allows one to choose text/background colours.

It looks fine at 1024x768 on my iBook: Link (http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm244/motorollin/aorg/aminet.jpg)

I will keep my silence about this. No need to start a flamewar, it will not offer anything.
Anyway, aminet was never so good before but i wonder what he was thinking when he wrote this.

just found out the site looks as usual if you use AWeb. The new "joke" interface is shown only if you use non-amiga browers, heh heh :-)

you guys are cracking me up.

I thought it was a great joke.

Although I had to use my pc and Netscape to get the full effect (didn't bother trying IE), I thought the OS 1.3 theme was kind of cool. ;-)

Joke or not... I'm still shocked

Currently it's almost readable (at least within Firefox), but one thing about the theme: As most classic Amiga users may have used WB1.3 at 640x256 screen mode (no interlace), the window graphics and disk icons should be scaled vertically to double size.

However, tough joke  :-)
