we all probably know that programming required a compiler or an interpreter. but, can you buy these any where for the amiga? let us say, C programming...

We will have StormC package in a few days added to the store.

Theres also the free GCC on the Amiga, although it doesn't have an IDE so you should use the commercial CubicIDE or similar.

I never really understood this obsession with IDEs.

Maybe I'm just oldskool geek, but IMO they just get in the way.

3246251196 is used to the PC compiler packages so I thought he would be used to (and prefer) an IDE

Nothing wrong IMHO with using GCC in the Shell.

I was at a lecture yesterday where the guest speaker was runing UNIX v6 (1976 vintage) on an emulated PDP11. :bow:

Another commonly used C compiler on the classics is VBCC (http://sun.hasenbraten.de/vbcc/).  It is a free download but you'll need the Amiga Developer CD (preferably v2.1) for the programming documentation unless you happen to have the Rom Kernal Reference Manuals around.  You'll also need the Developer CD if you decide to use GCC.

Furthermore you're A1200 will likely need some extra expansion (such as an IDE splitter) to get a CD-ROM drive to work with your A1200 when it comes.

you cant go wrong w/StormC... works great even under UAE.

No nothing wrong with StormC for 68k - I used it myself.
But for OS4 native you need GCC or VBCC. StormC just won't cut it there - unfortunately.

Only problem with StormC is the german documentation here and there. Its not MS Visual Studio, but nothing beats StormC4 on the Amiga IMO.

I used to use DICE, and it's now available free from Matt Dillon's Obvious Implementations Corp - http://www.obviously.com/amiga/

Just download AMiDevCpp.  It's free.  It has a very good IDE and cranks out code for ALL Amigas even AROS.  Get it here:  http://amidevcpp.am.funpic.de

thanks for the replies. however, its all well and good for you guys who have amiga CD drives (CD32 drives right?) but when i get my amiga i will merely have DF0 and DF1 - no cd hardware. so, how can i get a compiler now? or, will i need a CD drive?

You can transfer data across from the PC with a A1200 PCMCIA Compact Flash Adapter (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=440) package.  Data on a CDROM could be copied to the CF card for transporting to the Amiga.

cool - ill get one. looks as though i will - over then next few months - acquire quite a bit of useful hardware. but, like i say, money is not overly good with me being a student! ill manage however
