Title: BLIZZARD 1260
Post by: seb835 on March 23, 2006, 07:06:24 PM
Hi,

Thinking of putting one of these  BLIZZARD 1260 boards in my standard dekstop Amiga 1200, but i'm worried abotu heat issues.

Do these boards really need a fan? Is there another board on the market for increasing ram and acceleration that doesnt generate so much heat?

Thanks for your help.

It depends of how hot the particular version of 060 chip on it gets. Not all 060s on B1260 cards are the same, and get equally hot. Try and see.

Me too. Even with 128 MB of RAM and SCSI-KIT. I use it without trapdoor to allow more airflow.

It also depends on how hot you think is too hot. Some get so hot that you can burn your finger if you touch it. Personaly thats too hot but some say it runs just fine that way.

Yep. I've got one like that. :-) Keep your finger on it for longer than a few seconds and it burns. :boohoo:

If it is just WHD you are after; consider an 030 based board that allows a big heap of fastram.
As for the 060; I have an apollo but it is not getting very warm. I even have the trapdoor inplace. Then again, the apollo has the advantage of the cpu facing upward iso downward in case of the blizzard.

I highly recommend the 060 it is more fun than an 030 and is not that hot in terms of heat. The challenge is getting everything to work. Expect compatibility issues. But the horepower available allows your A1200 to do more things than would be possible with the 030.

Agreed - the '060 is far faster, but the '030 is far more compatible with games. You may find that even with WHDLoad, some games will refuse to work with the '060 whereas they'd be fine with an '030...

Though AFAIK you'll have no fast ram.

Where exactly would one find a Blizzard 1260?  I haven't seen any listed for quite a while

www.amikit.com and www.softhut.com are the only places i can find "new" blizzard A1260's

Amigakit doesn't have any for sure, and Softhut had no plans to bring any more in when I inquired last year.

I'm possibly going to be selling my boxed Blizzard 1260 soon... I've been trying to decide which to keep - the 1260 or my 1230 (I use the 1230 a heap more for WHDload games).
