Hello,
Are there any PD wordproccessors like WordWorth or Final Writer?
-
Hi,
There are quite a few free/PD Text editor, But not many PD/Free Word processors.
But if you check out Aminet (http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/aminet/) a wealth of free and nearly free software for the Amiga, Then type "textengine" in the search box ( top left ) you will get two results, Its the top one. I haven`t tried it recently, But i think i remember it being a full program.
Hope this helps, :-)
Regards
Trooper

If that's the same program that I've got (think it is) then its pretty good, but not a fully-fledged word processor with DTP-style functions, or even much text formatting. It doesn't even have full WYSIWYG. In some ways it's not even as advanced as Kindwords :-)
But it's good for basic stuff, and it does have a spell checker.

Amiga Format gave away Final Writer Lite or SE or something on a coverdisk once, I used to use that as it was really good and very fast. You might be able to find it on a coverdisk site....?
-
Coverdisks are available here (http://nthdimension.emuunlim.com).

Is that site legal or a piracy site ? Usually, it's not legal to upload a cover disk anywhere, because the copyright owners made legal and binding contracts with a specific magazine for distribution on a specific cover disk.

There's nothing to suggest the site is in any way "official" or connected to the magazines so it's technically illegal... But:
(1) Most of these were PD or demos anyway
(2) The few full programs are generally obsolete or have since been made PD or released under GPL (OctaMED & DOpus 4 respectively)
Not making excuses but they're just old coverdisks, it's not like they're leaking OS4 code or something!
As for word-processors, the commercial ones were always better. I never found anything in the PD that satisfied me. Surely you can find an old (original) copy of Wordworth somewhere?

Would anyone really care if it was illegal? it is not like it hosts the latest software available from shops.
Is Wordsworth even still being sold? if not then download it.
-
wordworth is still being sold by quite a number of amiga retailers, and it is a bloody good piece of software and should be purchased rather than downloaded

Well, I most certainly do. And I'd request that the URL is edited out of this thread (Wayne ?). I've had my software on cover disks and an Aminet CD and in all cases there was a contract and I was paid. In return, a license was granted to my partner. I'd assume that the same is true for many other developers. Third parties stepping in, ripping software of cover disks and distributing it openly on their own terms is copyright theft. Of course it's possibly that this site is completely legit and that exclusive content was removed. I don't know, that's why I was asking.

I second that. You know, I'd never think twice about downloading a Windows .iso, there are instances where piracy is defendable or even justifiable, but with the Amiga the way that it is, it's just silly. However....
I'd request that the URL is edited out of this thread
...that's going overboard. If the software is out of print, how are you going to make any more money on it anyway?

It is silly, just look at how many Amiga users complain about people downloading pirate 80s and early 90s Amiga software but are happy to use Snes,nes,genesis,SMS,gameboy,spectrum,C64,mame,mac etc roms.
To many double standards in the Amiga community.

Most, if not all the copies of software on coverdisks are older versions of software meant as a teaser for people to buy the latest versions, which manages to help sales. Those who are satisfied with the older coverdisk versions most likely weren't serious enough or didn't like the software enough to pay for it anyway. It's just silly to think that every single download is a lost sale.
Think about the whole point behind putting software on coverdisks in the first place. You received a payment and you got exposure. I've purchased quite a bit of software which I originally saw in coverdisk form. Sounds like you're now trying to bite one of the hands that feeds you.

"Most if not all" ? That's a very relaxed approach to software piracy and copyright theft. It appears that some here have no problem with downgrading cover disk software to "useless old crap" and then happily proceeding with downloading the very same software. What's that called, hyopcritical ? You may wriggle as much as you want but exclusive content on cover disks, purchased for distibution by a magazine, is licensed content, normally not freeware. Stealing it is in no way better than stealing other software. If stealing doesn't disturb your peace of mind, go right ahead. Otherwise, purchase the cover disks or, if unavailable, purchase equivalent software and help to keep the Amiga market alive.

Okay, the rest is freeware or on the disk to make the thing easy to use for newbies. Amiga software sales were atrocious before I posted the link. I could be wrong, but I suspect the culprit lies elsewhere...Then again it could've been the coverdisks all along. :-?
