Title: Supernatural activity and trhe amiga!
Post by: RobinGodd on March 11, 2006, 04:48:23 PM
Has anyone used an amiga (and/or) other computer and used it for awhile believing that its in working order used it no problem.

Then has anyone ever looked inside the old computer and found its power source is disconnected or an important cable is missing(e.g. floppy cable), yet it worked even though it shouldn't have?

Spooky Chicken stuff eh?

I was doing some word processing a couple of nights ago (on a peecee). I'd copied and pasted lots of text and then I needed to copy someone's name and address from one file to another. At least that's what I intended. What I got from the paste was just a name, but not the name I copied. There was no address either. Spooky thing was, that name wasn't even in either of the files, nor did I recognise it. So where did it come from?

Nah, nah, nah, nah, nahhhh...!

Was it supernatural activity that added the extra "r" to this thread's subject, or just bad typing?!  :-D

Circa 1989 a girl, possibly evil, gave me a free power strip thingy with 5 or 6 outlets in it.  It was constructed of heavy metal.  It seemed ok.  So I plugged in my A2000 and 1084S monitor and other things.  Everything seemed to work fine.  I used that machine all day every day for database work plus games.

One day I had to reach behind the computer for some reason.
I placed my hand on the A2000 case while leaning heavily.
I was horribly shocked when 120V of 60hz AC current began flowing through my hand and arm.  :BananaElectrocution:

Somehow the metal case of my A2000 was carrying current.
Yet the A2000 continued to work perfectly.  It didn't crash or even reset.  I would have expected it to have been fried.

How is it possible that AC current was flowing through the A2000 case?

I always just assumed it was that the power strip had been rigged to murder my Amiga and/or myself.

But perhaps it was supernatural?

The most supernatural thing to happen to my Amiga lately was a SCSI error during an MP3 that caused random track skipping. The resulting 'mix' actually sounded quite good.

When I rebooted I could hear voices from my earphones, as though they were acting as an antennae for some foreign radio station!

I can also hear when I'm about to get a text message a few seconds before it happens as my speakers make a morse-code style hum.

Technically, ground can be any kind of voltage it does not matter to the electronics, however if you connect an external device which has a different ground, that's when you get in trouble. If it is plugged into a port on you amiga it will most likely fry it.
But as in you case the external device were you, and you only touched the case which doesn't have electronics directly attached which means only you gets fried :-)

@Hyperspeed

The 'White Noise' movie will explain it for you.

Well, back in 1986/87/88 I started with computers.
My first maschine was a CBM 610 with 128 kB (expanded to CBM 620 with 256 kB (!)).

I coded heavily for this maschine (Basic), as nearly no software was available for this System.

My "masterpiece" was a sort of "graphical user interface", which I called "X-Copy" (inspired by the Amiga Program, but actually it was more like Dopus4).
As my System didn't have/support a mouse, I had to move the cursor with the arrow keys, and when the desired item was highlighted I had to press "Enter" instead of double-clicking with the left mousebutton.

This way working with this system became much more convenient.

One day - after I was fiddeling around in the code - I saved the code to the disk.

Normally the code needed 35 blocks of disk space - but when I had saved it this time, I noticed that it occupied just one (1) block on the disk!

I reloaded the code to see what happened. To my big surprise it was the complete code, which normally occupied 35 blocks; just the first two lines were from a different program.

I replaced the first two lines with the original ones and the code worked flawlessly.

But sadly ever since then the code took 35 blocks again on the disk when I saved it...
