Hi!! I have a strange thing happening in my recently upgraded A3000.
I added a Magnum 040, installed software properly, but when i go to Early Startup Menu , it doesnt show any board working
Strange is that the utilities that came with the board , when i doucle click on them they say "Mercury 040 found".
Stranger than that, when i go to Showconfig, it says BOARDS: none.
Is this behaviour normal? Should the board be on the early startup menu?
How can i certainly know for sure if the board is working or not?? Any kind of test? Any special program to kwno if its actually working?
Thanks in advance
Sebastian

the a3640 i have in my a3000 don't show to early startup so i think that's a normal behavior. everything i put in zorro slots shows up ok. the same for the showconfig. but what type of cpu is in showconfig? run the sysinfo to see some cpu info and run a test too to see any speed diferences
-edit-
but you place a magnum or a mercury?
-
erhm...MErcury!!!
sorry, my mistake
Now machine refuses to boot, all i get is The purple 3.1 screen asking to insert a disk....
-
i've been confused a bit... the card is a cpu board with the 040 on? if yes, do you have change some jumbers on the a3000 motherboard to syncronise the amiga to the new cpu?
for the disk prompt, did you made a reset with lamiga ramiga ctrl keys?
-
Exactly, its a cpu board with a 040.
I didnt touch anything on the A3000 board, i wouldnt know what to touch since i dont have the A3000 manual, and i dont know which jumpers to touch...
More light here please!!!

go to big book (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/) type mercury to search panel to find the board. you will find some info there :-) what kickstart do you have on? it neads at least a real 2.04 and not softkicked to work
-edit-
well... these jumbers are on the mercury, except that they must setup correct, some jumbers on amiga must change too.
search on internet for this info. i can give you the setup for a3640 but i don't know if it works ok for mercury too.
no safety no surprise, the end... doors

i have just installed brand new 3.1 roms to the machine...it booted ok, i installed wb 3.1, everything ok...
i installed the board...it didnt show up as i said on my first post...but machine was still working...
Now it refuses to load, it just keeps asking to inster disk with the purple screen.
I reinstalled wb 3.1, same results...
i went to big book of amiga hardware, but i didnt understand about it.-..my card was supposed to be working (at least last user who sold it to me promised that), so i wasnt supposed to touch anything..
In my machine i have 2 megas of chjip ram and 12 of fast ram if that helps.....

you have to contact with him, and if he have use the board he will know for any jumbers issue. but that the disk don't boot maybe it's a failure of something with the scsi controler. did you change anything to the disk? can you boot with a workbench or install3.1 floppy?
-
yes, i can boot with a floppy or wb 3.1.... but i have 2 HDD, the first one (the original which came with the machine, is 50MB, and is not seen on the WB, just the "work" unit (second hdd) is seen on the wb screen...
so i guess i should try a "new" hdd, right?¿?
-
if the workbench installation you have is new boot from install3.1 disk, install the 50mb disk with Hdtoolbox (take care about anything you do with Hdtoolbox) make the boot partition again and install the workbench files. maybe the disk is not dead yet...
-edit-
after the partitioning install the fastfilesystem file in the rdb of the disk, setup the partition to use the ffs with 512 byte, international, no dircache, save changes reboot and format the disk. install the wb then.

well well well...after following all your advices and watching carefully the jumpers...i made the beast work!!!!
IT doesnt show up on the early startup screen...but i "feel" that all programs are faster than before, and showconfig tells me i have a 040 with fpu...so great news..i just replaced the ol 50MB hard drive (R.I.P), which was the original that came with the Amiga 3000 many moons ago, and put a 4.3 i found somewhere in my flat.
Now, i will try to install my Cybervision 3d, and i think i will have a pretty much decent A3000
Thanks for all the advices!!!
Cheers!
