Title: Expanding my A4000D.
Post by: drewz21 on March 09, 2006, 06:34:23 PM
I recently purchased this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8770588914&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

and this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8774293505&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

I'm also about to get this too.

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32&products_id=250&osCsid=7e769109ac13b21c9568395daa2fb6c6

and I would like a bit of help please.

First of all, will there be any issues with possible overloading my A4000D?  Power, heat, etc...

Second, with that video card can I use a TFT flat-panel of my choice or should I seek out a CRT with the full range of Amiga video choices?

Third, any other issues I should be aware of or configuration issues I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Looks like your graphics card came with a scan-doubler, so any monitor will do!

However, be aware that with any TFT panel, running it at a non-native resolution can potentially give you worse results than a CRT-based screen.

E.g. if your panel is 1024 x 768 (worst case!), then running an 800 x 600 display on it will give poor results.

Ok, I forgot about that native resolution stuff with TFT's.  I don't really understand why they are that way.  Hmmmm...

Ok, I'll stick with a CRT then.

Thanks for the info.

Geeze thats gonna be sweet  :-o  :-D

power shouldn't be a problem.
but heat will be in a desktop case. organise some fans to keep the PPC card cool, and to exhaust the hot air out of the case.
maybe replace the PPC heatsink and fan (known to break) with something a little more meaty.

The Cyb64/3D GFX card, (i had one) will be fine. no need for heat sinks or the like. i stuck a heatsink on mine, but more for asthetics than anything.

- note
if you are going to try to use 3D apps, then the Cyb64/3D doesn't really cut it. get either a mediator4000Di with a voodoo3 card, or a CybervisionPPC. (both of those cards NEED heatsinks.)

the video card will be able to output to what ever flatpanel of your choice with that scandoubler. - just you might want to run workbench at its native resolution. 1280x1024 or what ever... its more than capable. :-)

non-native resolution is where the video processor of the monitor has to adjust something like a 320x256 into a 1024x768 - or some such numnber, which is the number of pixels the flatpanel physically has. as a result, it can be fuzzy at best, or at worst. hard on the eyes to the point of migrain inducing.

however modern flat screens are much much better at figuring out how to display non-native resolutions these-days...

flat panels have a physcial limitation with one colour element representing one pixel. hence unless using them at native (one pixel = one element) resolution...

CRTS don't 'really' have that problem. so are much better at multiple resolutions...

I'm using a 17" TFT with my CV64/3D + scandoubler combo, and haven't had any problems yet. The autoswitching works really well.

I'm running a CSMK2 + SCSI, CV64/3D + scandoubler and X-Surf 2 in an A4000D case, and haven't gotten any problems with heat or stability problems. Be aware of the PPC CPU though, it is very fragile, and gets very hot, so your need for cooling is higher than my needs.

That's alot of dough well spent  :-D

Just make sure that CS PPC gets lots of fresh air so it won't die
Remove unused backplates (zorro boards)so fresh, cool air can get in since it's only the PSU fan  that draws hot air out of the box and air also has to get in for proper air flow.
Also essential is that all cover plates (except backplates) must be in places otherwhise the airflow will be wrong...my case was like a sauna before I covered my empty floppy space at the front because my zorro cards didn't get any airflow since it only drew in air at the front so no air passed the boards

Thanks AMIGAZ.  Great advice.  I've only got the standard CD-ROM and single floppy drive on my A4000D.  The other floppy bay is still covered.

Believe me, with the money I've spent on this computer I don't want to lose anything so all the advice given is much appreciated.

I added an 80mm fan near the front of the computer next to the Zorro slots to cool things off on that side of the case.  The daughtercard pretty much blocks any airflow from the single fan in the power supply.  (Not to mention any cards that are installed)

I have plans to swiss-cheese the underside of the front bezel (out of view) to help with air intake, I just haven't had the time.
