Title: Got a replacement Zip Drive. But it's really slow
Post by: marcfrick2112 on March 07, 2006, 05:33:56 AM
Hello, I recently replaced my SCSI 100MB Zip Drive, to restore
some files I still had on Zip disks. The drive is Incredibly
SLOW, however, especially during writes. It takes about 4-5
seconds to copy a 776K file to my 2GB SCSI HD, but 33 seconds
to copy the same file to the Zip!! What gives? I swear that the
Zip was faster than this even on my '030 A500!
   My config.:
A1200 Power Tower, 2MB Chip, 128MB Fast RAM, OS 3.9 W/ BB1 & 2,
DCE 68060/50 Mhz w/1230 SCSI Mod., Quantum 2.1 GB SCSI HD, 8.5 GB IDE
HD (SYS:), arctec SCSI Scanner, and the !#$@%^%^^@! Zip drive!

Hope someone can help.

Try the command

AddBuffers ZIP0: 500

Assuming that ZIP0: is the name of the Zip drive device in DEVS:DosDrivers

Thanks for the suggestion, AmigaKit, but firstly
, in my experience, using the the ADDBUFFERS command
with my Zip drive does not do very much to speed it up.
Yet, if I issue an ADDBUFFERS command to either my IDE
or SCSI HD, I notice an instant improvement in
transfer speeds. Second, I don't know whether CHIP or FAST RAM
are being used when I use an ADDBUFFERS command. Having no graphics
card, Chip RAM is at a premium. Sure, using HDToolbox, I could fix this,
back up, re-format,
and copy back all of my Zip disks, but at this rate, it would
take WEEKS (11 Zip disks)
GRrrr.... My crappy old A500 with a SupraDrive 540 MB HD, and my original
Zip Drive would run circles around my current Zip Drive setup.
Anyone have ideas? I know the Zip is slow, but most of my
backups are on Zip's. 1230 Module has issues with a Zip?
68060 problems with the Zip? Bad LucK?

P.S. @ amigakit: I am using OS3.9, so I have no need of a Zip0:
file in SYS:Devs/DosDrivers/ anymore. OS3.9 has a very nice
program for Zip/Jaz drives; and thanks to the 1230-IV, no worries
about diskchange.
