Yes I know it's not realy the right forum to use but still I need an answerr on this so here goes.
Which is the fastest of these two:
Pentium4 1.7Ghz/512K L2/400FSB (old 130nm tech) or CeleronD 2.53Ghz/256K L2/533FSB (newer prescott 90nm tech core)?
Any input on which of these that runs the hottest would also be great (and yes the Celeron could very easily be clocked to 3Ghz but that's not what I intend, atleast not right now).

Both are very poor... But the Netburst architecture dies a death at slow speeds, so I would suggest the CeleronD, even though it has hardly any cache.

Hum,
might be cheaper to buy a new mobo and AMD 2.8Gh chip.

I'm with Blob here, a cheap Athlon64 on an nForce4 mobo would give you best value for money!

Actually got some good results from TomsHardware (http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2004.html?modelx=33&model1=42&model2=39&chart=19). The question was so I knew what motherboard to go for. But it'll be the CeleronD because as it turns out it's both a fair bit faster and also cause 400FSB motherboards are hard to come by these days.
It's not ment to be a game machine, have my P4 '650' 3.4Ghz for that and it works well, have a P4 1.8 small desctop that might go and become a Media Center (if there's enough power in it, don't know what the requierments are). The CeleronD would be a nice backup machine for any twisted idea I get like try make a server or anything else that tikles my interest and it also gives me a good excuse to get rid of my old P2/P3 machines once and for all (perhaps except for one to keep as leverage in case the wife starts nagging).
