What year is it? 42 for me, I think. I always loose track.
Suprising to see so many young bloods actually. I was 17
when the Vic 20 hit the local Kmart, 19 when the C64
had me drooling over the demo model at the mall every
other weekend, and 25 when I saw my first "jaw dropping"
Amiga. Other computers have been bigger and faster since
then, but not as interesting. So can it happen again at 43
with a new Amiga?

Meaning of life passed you by since then?  :-D

So wait, at 42 I should have the answer to life and every thing?
Drat, I must have missed the galatic bypass for that road a while back.

Jikes I thought I was going to be the oldest! I'm 56, or will be in April. I feel about 80 but that's another story. Say, I wonder what is the correlation of age to number of computers?  I have 10 in all. 7 are Amigas.

Hmm let's see...
    6 amigas & change. (parts)
4 peecees 6 if you count the bridgeboard & the dual server
      as 2 computers. :-)
    2 Atari 8 bitters
1 hand built Z80 POS from the Elder Days.

A few interesting ones:

Jay Miner would have been 73
Andy Worhol would have been 81
Ted Danson (God forbid) is 54
Debbie Harry is 61
Dick Van Dyke is 81
Amigans all.
Guess I'm in good company!

@AMIGAZ - passed away? I thought he was living somewhere in tax exile?!

As for the correlation between the number of computers and age, I'm not sure about that! I have:

1 x Sinclair ZX80
2 x Sinclair ZX81 (one non-working)
4 x Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K (one non-working, plus ZX Interface One, Two, Microdrives, etc)
2 x Sinclair ZX Spectrum + 128K (one non-working)
1 x Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2A
1 x Sinclair ZX Spectrum +3
2 x Sinclair QL (one non-working, other with disk interface)
1 x Atari 520STFM (1Mb upgrade and DS drive)
1 x Atari 520STE (1Mb upgrade)
2 x Acorn BBC Master 128 (with disk drives)
2 x Acorn Archimedes A30x0 (both with hard drives and RAM upgrades)
2 x Commodore 64 (one with a 1541)
1 x Commodore 64DTV joystick
1 x ageing Dell laptop
4 x home-built PCs with varying specs
1 x Apple MacII LC
3 x Philips CD-i players (one developer machine)
1 x Gamecube
1 x Vtech kiddies computer (68000-based, a future project!)
1 x Amiga 1000 (with Insider 1Mb board)
1 x Amiga 500 (with GVP HD-8 hard drive / RAM upgrade)
1 x Amiga 600 (with RAM upgrade and 200Mb hard drive, plus a spare non-working A600 mobo)
1 x Amiga 1200 (68060 / 32Mb / 2Gb hard drive / external HD floppy / Subway USB)
1 x Amiga 3000 (68060 / 128Mb / 10Gb hard drive / Catweasel / Cybervision 64 / Ethernet)

And...

1 x very understanding girlfriend!  :-)

The PCs, the A3000 and the A1200 are the only machines set up and ready to go, the rest are in storage.

For my 50th birthday last year, a relative gave me an MP3 player.
When I told her it wasn't an appropriate gift for someone as old as me, she said "you can have a second childhood", but I had to correct her and said "I haven't finished my first childhood yet!

As for my collection of antique technology, there are about 9 or 10 PC's in the house (all working), and my 4000/040 and a 1200 with a PPc 603 card (040/25 - PPC 200).

C64 w/ 1541
Atari 800XL w/ Indus GT

Apple IIGS w/ 1408KB
Sony MSX2 w/ 512KB and Sunrise IDE
Amiga 2000 w/ A2630@28MHz, OS 3.9 and GVP HC+8
many PCs ranging from 8088 to AMD Sempron

Me 31. Funny how time passes by...

Amigan since 1988, that is more than half my life, given the fact that the first years of childhood are week in memory, the most time of my life i am Amigan. Still remember that I day in 1988 I picked up that A500. When entering the bus packet loaded to drive home a guy shouted to me, I better should have bought an Atari instead. I replied "no way!".

Those were the times...
But current times are not bad either :-)

Long topic. 5 pages in under on day!

Anyway, here's my collection of computers:

1997: A500+ with 1meg expansion card (A500+ now doesn't work)

1999: Dell 500MHz PIII (still my main computer)

2004: Old Compaq laptop (now kinda broken)

Feb 2005: Amiga 500+ with 512k expansion (also has stopped working now, so I'm A500less)

Oct 2005: Dell 400MHz Celeron, bought as spare computer or to use as a server, and is currently my main machine until I get the other dell fixed

Jan 2006: Commodore A1200 with Blizzard 1230. I want a new case and keyboard as half the screws are missing and it has a german keyboard. It now has an HD in and is really nice to use.

BCD=Binary Coded Decimal, the stuff you use for LED displays and such. 4 bits for each decimal digit.

SO: 00100101 -> 0010=2, 0101=5 -> 25.

BTW this is my age as well.

My brothers old A500 with C= key instead of LAMIGA
Then..A1200->A4000->A600->A1200->A4000T->A4000

Currently:

Well let's see.  Here's my computer history/collection.

I started with a TI 99/4A with a speech synthesizer.
Then I went to an Atari 800XL.
Then to an Atart 65XE.
After that I got my first Amiga 500.  Bone Stock.
The 500 got sold.   :(
Got another Amiga 500.  1MB.  External 3 1/2.  1084S.
Sold it.  :(
Got my first IBM PC then.  386SX-16
Then a 486DX-33.  (Kept that one a long time)
I had several other PC Clones that I won't bother to list.  They all sucked anyway compard to my Amiga.  :)

As of today I have the following.
Amiga 500 (not working)
Amiga 1000 with 2MB (It's a beautiful machine)
Amiga 2000
Amiga 2000HD with a 52MB HD
Amiga 4000 68040/25 with 16MB, 4GB HD, Toastscan, 3.1 ROMs, OS 3.5.
1084S Monitor
1080 Monitor
TONs of software.  Quite a few spare parts too.  I keep everything I'm not using in clear plastic containers so I can see what's inside.
I'm also looking forward to OS4.0 and some hardware to run it!  :)

Oh and on the PC side I've got 2 x 3.2GHz machines the wife and I use to play Everquest2 on.  A 1.7GHz IBM laptop I work on, 1 DELL 2.4GHz music/photo server, 3 DELL desktops for the kids to use all networked with wired 100MB Ethernet and 802.11G wireless.  And I've got Tivo on my wireless network too.  I love Tivo!

I'm 27.5

Slowly losing the hair on my head and acquiring it inside my nose, and I'm currently dating an 18 year old.
Did I hear someone say, 'mid-life crisis', cos I think I'm having one about 15 years too early.

Oh, btw, hello everyone. Haven't been around at all, been doing silly things like drinking so much at the weekend it takes two days to recover. Oh and f*cking like a rabbit - sorry, I prefer that to Amigas...

The A4 laptop is great. Not used it in a couple of years - its hidden away somewhere but at least I know its still there. I "liberated" it from a school so I could use it myself in my GCSE D&T to control lego type models.

no nasal hair problems (not much anyway !), but I am sprouting from me lug'oles. I still have plenty on top (about 2 foot !) and a beard you could lose a weasel in. actually, a small badger could hide in my hair - it is greying !

oh, Cyberus, I used to to that - (not with an 18 yr old, lucky goit !) but I can't get near the missus anymore. something to do with the cosequences of doing that 38 weeks ago ! and that was the 1st time in ages too ! might have to pay a visit to the pliers cupboard, just so I can restart recreatin', and stop procreatin' !

two A1200's (including an Apollo1230LC lite, an Apollo 1230/40 partially working)
an A1XE-G3 (OS4 prerelease update 4)
a Toshiba Tecra laptop (not strictly mine- I do standby for a system that runs on AIX, and sometimes work from home too)
one partially dismembered Apple Mac IIci (no keyboard, mouse, or monitor)
a Handspring Visor
a Palm IIIc (given to me wife)
a Sony Clie SJ30
and I wouldnt say no to an original Sinclair QL either !
(I got the green eyed monster over me shoulder reading of ZX interface 1's and microdrives - I hankered for those in my teens !)

Oh, you young kids. I was around 12 when I saw my first computer in real life. Nobody I knew had ever seen a computer. My school managed to get a Commodore PET on loan for a few days and we were all amazed. (yes, the very first computer I saw was a Commodore!)

I am horrified when I think that there are now generations of kids who have only known Windows. At least it seems from this thread that a few discover the amazing Amiga. :-)

I used amiga's since I was very young (probably 1995/1996).

The person who moved in next door worked at a school that used amigas and I got to borrow one during the holidays. At my school we had Macs and BBCs (my current comprehensive school still uses BBCs in the science department).

I then bought an amiga from the school in 1997.

So I have had an amiga for quite a loing time.

4. P3 1200 Mhz laptop

Just gonna add to my list here

1x BBC - in storage (thanks for jogging my memory Steve30)
1x Amstrad that runs GEM
1x HP Journada 430
1x Everex Freestyle
1x SE P900
1x SE P910i
1x Sega Megadrive
1x Gameboy (the original ones - not the colour or anything)

Why the surprise in so many younger users? The Amiga was the computer so many of us had as kids. I remember my brother getting his A500 in about 1990 when I was about 8 or so & then selling it a few years later - I hated him for that! Had a vic 20 & a C64 before that. My Mum works in a school & would bring a BBC or an Acorn 3000 home for me to use on holidays. That could be how I managed to liberate the A4 laptop :-D

Heh! I always used to want one of those - printing on real white-ish paper, rather than Sinclair's silver astro-bog-roll dispenser!

And some of the later ones had sound (well, beeper) amplifiers built in to assist the Spectrum's rather feeble buzzer!

Well, to make you more green-eyed (sorry!), I bought one QL, fully boxed and in great condition, with lots of Microdrive cartridges, for the princely sum of £5 at a radio/electronics fair about 10 years ago in the UK... Bargain!

What's the average age at now?

In case my message of reaching 25 for the 2nd time around was mistaken for 26, it should actually be 49, soon to be the BIG 50.

As for those listing their computers, here's whats keeping my house warm:

2x A1000
2x A500 - 1x w/A530
2x CDTV
2x CD32 - 1x new - never opened
1x A2000 w/060
3x A3000D - 2x w/040 Warp Engines
1x A4000D
3x A4000T - 1x Escom 1x ToasterOven & 1 PowerTower 2x w/CSPPC's
2x A1200 - 1x 030 & 1x 060 w/SCSI

47 here, still using the 2000 I bought in 87
(CG64, CD rom, new PS, GVP040, X-Surf, Supra 8 ram, One Stop Music shop, Toaster).

1st comp was a homebrew 8080 rig (programmed in octal), based on the "Bugbooks" by VA tech.
2nd was a SIM 6502 single board (w00t, 4k of ram!)
3rd PET (chiclets keyboard)
4th Rockwell AIM 65 (I got a deal on it cause I worked for Rockwell)
5th Trash 80
6th CBM 8032
7th Vic20
8th C64
9th A2000

I also have 5 peecees (windoze and Linux) on a network with the A2k, as well as console games ranging from intellevision to playstation and N64.

That would be cool actually Eyso - I could drive up and see you some time; would be cool to catch up with Odin too...It's a 5 1/2 hour drive from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Groningen though, and that's not taking account of me getting to Dover and across La Manche.

Unless I can get the train across, or a cheap flight - but then I could probably only get to Amsterdam easily. Damn, why do you have to live all the way in the North of Netherlands?!?!

Seriously though, I haven't been to NL since they still had the Guilder!

Well, Odin is in Norge atm.
A cheap flight to Amsterdam will take 1 1/2 hour, and then there's a train straight to Groningen, wich will take 2 1/2 hour, and then it's a 6 mins walk from the station to where I live :-)
And why we all live in Groningen is because Groningen is a little backwards, that's what people from Holland think about us.

And oh yes, the guilder

I've also used my Amiga for coursework. I used the A500+.

But unfortunately, my biology coursework that I did on it was crap and needs major improvements, but BOTH my A500+s died.

Looks like I might have to type it out again, unless the PC can read amiga formatted SCSI Hard disks.

We still have one active Amiga user group close, in Washington D.C. (NCAUG) that meets every month!!

I always feel so old, thinking "I remember the first time I saw colour television", "I remember when the VCR came out", "I remember when Al Gore invented the internet.."

You guys in your 60's can say "I remember when WW II ended", "I remember when television got popular", "I remember when men were men and women were nervous"  ;-)

I'm 54
My first computer (excluding a programmable HP calculator was an Osborne 1 (8 bit 4 MHz Z80A processor with 64k of memory!) The first time I saw an A1000 I was entranced, but the first Amiga I owned was an A2000 when they first came out.  I ran that computer for years on the 68000 processor with 1 meg of memory until I finally got a hard drive card.  The mere fact of having the hard drive card soaked up enough memory such that a number of my programs would no longer run, then I added 8 megs more memory. Imagine 9 megs of memory being about all that one could possibly use! I now have 7 different types of amiga (2000, 500, 600, 1200, 3000T, CDTV, and CD32) plus a number of Thinkpads and the family has at least 1 P4 class machine each.

got my 1st computer with paper-boy money. it was an atari 800xl. later i got a 400 and 800.
then i got a c64 a couple of vic20s an apple2+ then a 64c.
later i got two a1000's then a 1200 then sold that to get a 3000
spinkled along the way were numerous homebuilt pcs for myself and others.

now im thinking of getting back into the 8bit arena with a c64 or 128 or an atari.

I'm 31. My first computer was a C64 in 1989, which I got by crying, crying and crying until my mom bought me one. Pulled the same stunt in April of 1991 to get me an A500. Shameless, I know. My parents weren't rich and an A500 was lots of money for them back then. I appreciate what they did for me all the more today, because it sparked my love for technology, for which I still have lots to thank for today.  :-)

19 - kinda surprising to see I'm not the youngest person here, but that's definitely a good thing :-)

Used my brother's A500 a lot when I was younger, which is when the Amiga bug bit.  My first PC was a 486 though, followed by a 1Ghz Athlon system (now upgraded to a Athlon64 3000+).  I've got a slightly-expanded A1200 which is great for playing games on at uni.  Haven't exactly got the money at the moment for anything NG however :-(

Talking of which, are any students here on facebook?  There's an Amiga group there (with a link to A.org no less!) but only 23 of us there.

I'm 39.

My first computer at age 14 was a Commodore 64 that I saved up for after taking a BASIC programming class on an Apple II.  Adding a Koala Pad and its included paint program was my first foray into computer art.

I pre-ordered the Amiga 1000 when it was announced in 1985 and took home one of the very first ones with a green screen monitor!  I was disappointed that I couldn't view the Mandril hires IFF at 256K RAM that was circulating back then and almost immediately ordered the front plate memory upgrade to 512K.  Next up was a 1080 monitor and external floppy drive.

Sometime after Commodore released the Amiga 3000, they had a special "trade-in" deal where you could get $1000 off for owning a A1000 without trading in the actual machine!  I had to go with my boss to the controller of the company I was working for then to ask for a pay advance so that I could make the cut-off date.  The controller, visions of Lotus 123 in his head, tried to talk me into getting a PC instead!

This is the machine that really started taking me places.  I  eventually maxed out the RAM with 70ns ZIPs, 4MB/$200+ at a time, and bought a Retina BLT Z3 and 12x18" Wacom tablet.  ImageFX and Imagine took me beyond DeluxePaint.

At university they had a Video Toaster system with LightWave  that I was able to use a bit and then later I worked under a National Endowment for the Arts grant doing animation.  The NEA grant paid for an Amiga 3000 system with an OpalVision card.

I eventually put together my own Video Toaster Flyer system in an A4000 that was always overheating so I kept the lid off and trained a fan on it.  It looked like Frankencomputer with all the bits hanging out and the SCSI octopus for the audio and video drives.

I later sold the A4000 and traded away the A3000 for a Compaq Proliant server, a decision that I came to regret.  I kept the A1000 for memory's sake.  This was around 2000.

Now, six years later, I've started buying Amiga bits and pieces again to revive an idea I once had for an installation art piece, and to explore other tech that I couldn't afford back when it was all shiny...

Sorry for all the long wind...!
Stivan

Im still 24 :-)
I see people are adding what computers they had, well I started off on the spectrum, stayed with that till 93 and then jumped on a CDTV, then moved to the PC in 94 and came back in the latter half of 94 after formatting the harddrive of the PC, I now use both PC's and Amiga's.
2 PC's (1x home, 1x work)
19 Amiga's
and a few others, like Sinclair QL's and such

Edit/// As of the 28th Dec Im 25

Wow! So there were still people using Speccies that late! And by that time, programmers had really got to grip with the Amiga's capabilities so it must have been a huge step up.

I took the Spectrum --> ST --> Amiga route, so there was less of a shock!

Oh, and I'm 34...

20 here, with 16 years of computing experience, started with an Amstrad CPC 6128 when I was 4, moved to an Amiga600 when I was 6 and was on a beast of a 1200 up to 2002-3, when I first built my own PC (we had PCs around and I used to service PCs as well but for my own usage, I was Amiga-only up until then).

35 is the number, but I feel much younger.

I bought my amiga in 1994, after using the C= 64.

In the mean time I used the Miggy only for making Music with Octamed. After a head-crash with the HD I realized I neglected the Amiga and now I take better care and be procautious.

I guess the average age should be around 30 ??

Frisby :-o

My first copy of Amiga Format is the September 1991 issue (DPaint IV coverdisk) and my first amy, an A500, was about a month or so after that.

Collection is now:

1x A1200 with 1960
2 x A2000
2 x A6000
1 x CD32
2 x A500, still looking for a Roctec external HD like I used to have.

227 ages recorded.

Total "experience": 7731 years

Averages:
Mean   : 34
Median : 32
Mode   : 28

Averages with oldest and youngest 10 people removed turn out to be the same, so we're not seeing corrupted data by oldies or young'uns :)

Bought my first A500 in 1987.  Amiga ownership has been

1.. A500 WB 1.2
2.. A500 WB 1.3
3.. A2000 WB 2.04
4.. A1200 WB 3.0, later 3.1
5.. CD32, with SX1.
6.. A4000T with the works

Sadly, all gone now.  Only Amiga Forever to remind me of those days.

Do I miss 'em? You bet, specially the A4000

I am 25.

I had my first Amiga when the Amiga 1000 first came out.
I still play on it and use it. I even used the Maths discovery game recently.

Dadio on da Padio got it for us, and we always used to play on it. I miss that. But I know my other posts arent really what people want, as most of you desire to just get help on your current Amigas, But people, We can help each other here for bigger and Better things from this company.

Im going to have a little time off now and Work on my car, gotta sand it and stuff, But I will create One final post, whereby anyone who give suggestions on what I and fellow colleagues, and followers if there are any on this site and other forums, can do, to get Amiga in 2nd place.

Cheers 8-)

While I died for a few years, and used PC only, The Amiga revived me. And Im sure there are many others out there around the world that need to be revived, but just dont see the point, as no new systems are out with sufficient new BOING factor programs.
