Title: Hi all
Post by: nlead on February 25, 2006, 04:49:03 PM
Hi all,

Just got myself an A1200 after feeling a bit retro (sold my last on over 10 years ago!).  I've got staight back into it and i love it!

I was looking through your site and noticed that there are some images of what seems to be awesome graphics on another OS other than Workbench 3.1.  As far as i was aware i though that there was never another release of Workbench since then.  What is it?  Can i run it on my A1200?  Or is this some kind of new Amiga OS running on a PC?  Please let me know because if i can run this i must have it!

Thanks

Nick

Welcome to Amiga.org :)

I think you are refering to Amiga OS3.5-4 or MorphOS

Here's some info on later AmigaOS http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=

Some of the nice shiny gui's are just patches and other enhancements

Welcome!  :-)

I know that last Amiga Classic OS is 3.9, based on 68k.

New, AmigaOS 4.0, PPC based, now is testing, not avaiable as final product.

Just some weeks ago was come out update 4, maybe last update before fo final version.

There are also AROS....and MorphOS.....both Amiga-like OS.

I hope that nobody kill me  :-P  about error, AmigaOS is lazy world...I understund.

Thanks for that.

So does this mean i can run this OS on my A1200 or am i better off just running Workbench 3.1?  If i am able to run it on the old Amiga where do i get it from?  I was also wondering about the possibility of conecting my Amiga to my existing PC network in order to share files and get internet connectivity.  Is this possible?  If so, via what methods?

Sorry about the amount of questions.  I need to learn!!

Nick

There are 3 newer versions of Workbench/AmigaOS since 3.1. These are: AmigaOS3.5, AmigaOS3.9 and now finally AmigaOS4.0.
The 4.0 is still not completly finished but exist in a pre release beta stage and 4.0 will only run on Amigas equipped with ppc accelrator or the newer AmigaONE. It currently runs only on the AmigaONE.

OS3.5 and 3.9 works on the classic amiga as long as you have enough ram and kickstart 3.1.

Here are a link to info about os3.9  http://www.amigau.com/aig/amigaos39.html (http://www.amigau.com/aig/amigaos39.html)
and os4 here: http://os4.hyperion-entertainment.biz/ (http://os4.hyperion-entertainment.biz/)

@nlead:

Welcome to A.Org!

To get a prettier Workbench, most of the patches and utilities that achieve this require a graphics card that provides greater speed and colour depth than the standard Amiga chipset, so if you're on a relatively unexpanded A1200, you won't be able to create the same look unless you upgrade in some way...

You are using a PC to surf the site?

On Ibrowse here is complains that http://os.amiga.com is no longer a valid link.

Firefox (Windoze version) redirects that to http://www.amiga.com/amigaos/
