Post by: HardStep on February 06, 2006, 03:39:34 PM
Hi guys,
where could i get power for a 3.5 inch hdd mounted inside original desktop Amiga 1200? From floppy connector or are there any other ways?
Thanks.

From floppy connector or external AT or ATX PSU. I always go for the first one, since it looks better :-)

Don't forget the backside of the MB PSU-connector, if a cable is connecting to that point, it also can work. Not really elegant, but it works too. Soldering isn't easy as well, but...

and maybe you can find a special cable for that need. it runs from floppy to the socket and continue to the hard disk, i have one to my second (burned) 1200... don't worry it has nothing to do with this :-)

@ amije

Actually, a fair number of 2.5" -> 3.5" adaptors have integrated power adaptors.

@ Thread

My 1200 came with a modified floppy power cable. Additional wire and a hard disk power connector had been spliced in.

I've read somewhere that the 5v from floppy connector should never be used to power the hard drive, but some of you guys are using it without problem, as i undrestand.
Actually i have a 2.5 inch drive but dont have 44pin ribbon cable for it right now. And the other connector is not on the mobo but on the FastATA 1200, so i can use that 3.5 inch connector. I'm not sure, if the machine will stay taht way(or i'll get 2.5" cable), but long 3.5" cable solves the hdd mounting problem, as i've removed the shield. I folded the cable like Z under the drive with rubber bands and it perfectly supports hard disk inside dsktop case.
One more question: is the 5v pin in floppy connector brown or red one? I left my multimeter at my parents house 120miles away and will not get it back in a week, so i'm unable to check the voltages.
I suspect the correct one is brown instead of red.

@twizzle and @Matt_H
guys you were right about the power connector in some 2.5 to 3.5 adapters. i open my 1200 after more than three years to install the subway and i've been surprised from the connector of power that has my ide adaptor! i supply the hd with a cable direct from the psu and i never notice the existance of the connector  :-)
