Title: Do PVS and/or ShowAmiga96 work with a Mediator/Voodoo solution?
Post by: Legerdemain on February 02, 2006, 08:20:02 PM
Problem No. 1: SOLVED! Thanks!

Problem No. 2: ShowAmiga96 (a Picasso96 dedicated bootpic app) doesn't find any suitable screenmodes although I've selected the Voodoo monitor in ShowAmiga96's prefs (no one of the Voodoo modes I've specified in Picasso96Prefs shows up in the reqester inside ShowAmiga96Prefs).

Problem No. 3: If I, although ShowAmiga96 doesn't find the screenmodes, try to view an added picture the screen goes black and the system hangs. If I run ShowAmiga96 in the startup-sequence the screen goes black and the system hangs.

Facts: In all other cases the screenmodes that I've specified for my Voodoo card, in Picasso96Prefs, works like a charm (selecting and using the modes with Prefs/Screenmodes, and so on).

Question: Has anyone gotten ShowAmiga96 to work together with a Voodoo card? And, if so, how?

I've had similar problems with a mediator / voodoo card. Check Picasso 96mode and see if the "attach to" lists your graphics card. If not that's your problem. Just check that everything is seated in correctly . You can also run a mediator report and see if the graphics card is listed. Hopefully this problem is a just a loose connection.

Hope this helps. :-?

Almost no applications that I've installed as of lately (since I did a complete reinstall) have been working the way they should. I've encountered problems with, I would guess, 90% of the software.

is your hard disk installed correct? i mean file system identifier, max transfer rate and stuff like that?

EDIT: I've completely rewritten my original post in this thread since the last one was confusing and misleading.

1) Install the more recent PVS-version that is available on Aminet. It works then. Be careful about the Mhz - default is set to 110Mhz and you can't set it higher in the GUI. I never need/use PVS and prefer to set my ENV-Vars directly.

Don't know about ShowAmiga96, but I don't think that both PVS and SA96 have similar problems.

The PVS on the OS3.9 disk definitely does not work with voodoo as the monitor in devs: - it simply does not recognise it as a p96 monitor.

What you CAN do is during the installation of the voodoo card (ie after you install P96, but before you rename the monitor to voodoo) run PVS to set up your environment variables.

But then there is little advantage in doing this - IIRC pvs doesn't tell you much about the settings, it just gives you a gui to set them in - you may as well just use setenv from the command line.

Don't know about SA96 - never used it.  I just have a blank screen until intuition resets the screen after loading workbench.  OT: It's a bit of a bugger when one gets an error requester which prevents intuition from doing this - having to change the monitor lead back to the rgb (via rgb>vga converter) just to be able to click 'ok' or 'cancel'.  Have got myself a switch box, but no cables as yet.

It works perfectly now! Thank you very much! It's not that I use PVS often, but I can't stand it when applications refuses to work.

ShowAmiga96 still doesn't work. Which is a shame, since it is the only BootPic viewer that I've seen so far that seems to offer exactly what I want (load the monitor driver almost first thing in startup, wait until the picture is fully loaded until shown, use plugins to fade it in, a progressbar and modules for the texts aswell, wait until everything in WB is fully loaded, perfect fade from BootPic into WB without any glitches, and so on...).

I guess it just doesn't work with a Mediator/Voodoo/P96 solution. Maybe I'll just send an e-mail to the author asking if he knows anything about this.

It does, I have used it myself before on several Mediator setups. For me the installation and usage didn't give me any trouble, so can't help you out though.

I almost figured that it wouldn't have anything to do with the Mediator/Voodoo solution, to be honest. But I hoped it had, thus my earlier statement. But, like so many other times: I've run into a problem which nobody else seems to have experienced. That's just my way of life... =)

But, like I said, I'll try to contact the author, maybe he knows what to do.

Doesn't ShowAmiga96 appear while Workbench is actually loading? If so, it must run in native output only 'cos the Voodoo stuff isn't available at bootime. Or am I completely up the wrong tree?

[EDIT: Ignore this, I'm atop that tree yonder!]

Cheers,
