Title: AmiKit is Awesome !
Post by: ckillerh3 on February 02, 2006, 01:59:22 AM
Hey -
I saw the link for AmiKit on the Amiga.Org homepage.  At first I thought it was a company that sold amiga hardware. Following the link I discovered it was a nice pre-configured set-up for using WinUAE and your original OS3.x disk.  The install script is flawless ! I had been struggling for months to download / extract / configure all the little helper files and libraries to get WinUAE to run nicely for me.  But running AmiKit did it all automatically and even had functionality I had not installed yet (fancy transparent menus, you name it !)  I am very impressed.  Give it a whirl if you have WinUAE and a ROM image, or Amiga Forever - Cloanto and your OS3.5 or 3.9 disk.  It is THE BEST !

How well do either of these run on real hardware? E.g. a 68060 with reasonable amounts of RAM plus a graphics card?

Anyone tried?

Might just have to install it to a real HD under WinUAE and then "transplant" the drive to my A3000 and see what happens!

I thought about doing that to my un expanded A1200, but then I figured that it didnt have the umph to do it.  Might have to remove and/or change some driver type files too, like display drivers or scsi drivers etc... to get it to work

If you do it, post the results, might push me to upgrade more :)

Good luck!

You can also try Classic Workbench (http://classicwb.abime.net/).

This has different versions for different hardware setups.  It's not as well appointed as Amikit, but then you might actually be able to use it on a 1200.

Awesome Indeed!

i dont think it'll easily work on a real amiga as the folowing from the amikit site suggests...

There are some issues already planned for future updates of AmiKit:
„Real“ Amiga version of AmiKit
Native Amithlon version of AmiKit
Support for WB3.1 (well, it depends…)

but very cool anyways!!

and in the one stop shop department, dont forget
AmigaSys (http://amigasys.fw.hu/)!!!

Hmm, forgot AmigaSys.  Good thing with UAE, you can have them all as different configs.

IMO, these preconfigured setups take the fun out of having an Amiga (real or emulated). A big part of the enjoyment of the Amiga is, for me, tweaking Workbench and getting it just how I want it. I replaced all the icons by hand with PNG icons, even made a load of icons myself, designed my own VisualPrefs theme etc etc. Also, AIAB et al look FAR too much like Windows for my liking...

I had AIAB installed an running on a A4000 about 6 years ago. It had a Picasso IV which helped alot. It ran okay but it could get sluggish depending on what combination of features you were using. I wouldn't put it on anything slower.

I will check out Amiga In a Box for my C= Hardware.

If my memory serves correctly, the terms of use of AmiKit
specify use only under WinUAE.

Yes, a part of the fun of the Amiga OS is taking the time to configure the system  to "have it your way" like the old Burger King motto.  You can still take AmiKit and tweak it the way you want it.  This package makes sure that all the bits and pieces (libraries, helper utilities) are in-place so you can do that quickly without the host of requestor errors when you are missing something.

Amiga Forever is quite nice allowing multiple configurations to be on-file so you can try different settings depending on what mood you are in any particular day.

It's a really nice product. I like it because it has a wealth of nice add-ons I didn't have on my previous setup, such as ShowAmiga96 and DOpus5. I have now migrated this platform under Amithlon, though I have a few minor issues to fiz, mainly due to the differences between WinUAE and Amithlon.

I do hope to see a native Amithlon kit soon!

Good work.

I did this.  I have an A4000T/060 with CyervisionPPC and 100Megs of ram.  I had to install it on my PC first, then I copied it over to a small partition on my A4000T that I wasn't using and then booted off it via the Early Startup Menu.  It didn't work straight away; I had to do some reconfiguring (I forget everything that was needed but it was mostly related to needing to switch AmiKit from P96 to CGX for my CVPPC) unfortunately that also meant I lost some cool things like ShowAmiga96.  :-(
