Title: Need Info
Post by: foleyjo on February 01, 2006, 11:24:13 PM
Ive made a DVD with a load of WHDload games on to save space on my PC harddisk. However even though all the files have copied none of them are recognised by the Amiga. Including the .info files
When I show all files I get all the files minus the .info ones. However there icons are a blank sheet of paper and when I click them it just farts(the error noise Ive selected) and says this icon has no default tool.

What do I need to do??

note because all the files copied onto the dvd I deleted them off the PC harddisk. Does this mean Im screwed??

sounds like you copied them without a format like Joliet. DOS will make the file names 8 characters plus a 3 letter extention. "abcdefgh.zip", for example

Joliet lets you keep long names. welcome to the wonderful world of PC.

in order to work on an amiga the files have to be renamed properly.

All files are showing up with there full names. For example "agony.info" shows fine. renaming it isnt do a thing :(. I have had the DOS filename problem in the past. Ive got cds with files on with names like fil~1.inf. etc
Yet this problem is different. Ive checked the infos and all the ticks are in there usual places (execute, delete etc)

if these .info are ''project'' infos you must specify the  tool that they search in a proper path usually C directory of workbench disk. in this case in winuae or in a real amiga if you click on an .info file and select from menu information in the window that will appear in the ''default tool'' type C:WHDload and if this is the tool that it needs, probably would be ok. well this means that you have to burn another dvd with this prob solved...

No the infos are the icons you get with whdload and the readme.info .
Usually the other files in the directorys go to their default icons when I show all files. It works with other games.

Another example
in the Agony drawer it contains:
agony.info(which usually runs whdload and all the tooltypes), agony.slave, disk.1, readme, readme.info

So I would expect 2 icons to appear but get nothing. Showing all files should make disk1 appear as a brown box and agony.slave appear as a hammer with a switch behind it.
Instead I just get everything but the #?.info's as a piece of paper.

I just set the readme to use multiview as its default tool and it just says "Unknown datatype"

odd... i did the same here but using a cd-r and i experienced no such problems. I by the way use the allegroCDFS driver that came with my elbox 4xEIDE ide adaptor.

Most likely, your windows copy app screwed the files' attributes. (probably cause it doesnt understand them).
