Title: warp3D support for voodoo gfx cards
Post by: lionstorm on April 14, 2003, 09:04:40 AM
Hi all,
I am investigating to get a voodoo3-3000 pci because I know for sure warp3d has 3D driver for this one but if I can not get this one but another one more recent (still a voodoo) will I get the full 3d support ?

I do have a friend calling himself Lempkee (hey are you there Lempkee ;) ) and his Voodoo5 has 3d support.

I've heard people have problems using Voodoo 5 (crashes and is recognised only as a Voodoo 3). Any newer boards than 5 (are there any?) probably won't work.

The support for Voodoo 5 is totally unofficial. We only really support the Voodoo 3. However, I do have a Voodoo 5 in my own machine and can run things like Heretic II on it without problems, but also without the additional features. This is on a mediator 4000, I didn't try on anything else...

For OS 4 we might have a look at it again and add a bit more of Voodoo 5 support to the driver, as an interim solution until Nova is finished. Don't hold your breath, though :-)

Interesting...is there any speed difference in
general WB usage between the Voodoo 3 and the
Voodoo 5?

I have a Voodoo5 on my A400/060, and there's some speed diffrence when I tested both Voodoo3 and Voodoo5 with Quake2/68k.

I think it's the amount of memory on Voodoo which makes the diffrence.

On demo1 I got 7.4 FPS on V5 and 6.2 on V3. If I have understood correctly, FPS value after demo is the average FPS?

i have only had issues with vodoo4 cards..., 3 and 5 works fine , both uses v3 3d, so dont expect it to use the special v5 issues, anyway the v5 has 64megs ram and thats why i love it over the 16meg v3... and when u run em in Wos u get half rtg mem, so the v3 is only 8megs!1!!! and the v5 is 32.

also the v5 has 15bit modes, but i havent seen or used any of theese yet.
(i was just recently told, so i am not sure since i havent had time to check out if they actually works or not...)

anyway the support for the v4 and v5 is documented in the mediator docs now, unlike before where it said ...MAYBE..
so please confront your mediator manuals (and mmcd) when u install it, there is a few things u need to do to get it running properly , but not the same as on v3..

but as i said, the v4 have given me headaches, so i dumped that....only have v3 and v5 left now.

also , i know of some people who have tried to get v5's working...they couldnt..., so u might need to have access to an pc so that u could update the cards , i had no such probs but heh...u never know...

(afaik that is regarding the mac pci v cards iirc)

Yup, Someone did this a while ago and got a Mac Voodoo5 card runningon his Mediator system by plonking it in a PC, updating the BIOS to the PC's version then it worked fine in his miggy.

Voodoo BIOS FAQ on Mediator site (http://www.amiga-mediator.co.uk/faq.shtml#8)

As for the 15bit modes you mentioned, From what I recall its mainly game introductions (iirc WipEout uses a 15bit screen for its intro) and then the various megademos that are about.
