Title: LHA or ZIP?
Post by: 560SL on January 21, 2006, 09:00:14 PM
Subject says it all... whats the best choice for big archives (e.g. entire disks etc.)? Been having problems with LHA from time to time, CRC errors, so I dont fully trust LHA for important backups any longer. Is it better to go ZIP on Amiga Classic?

Which ZIP programs are there availabe for Amiga Classic? I have CyberStorm PPC (060/64 + PPC/233).

have you try LZX ? it's better than lha and it's free too.

Agreed, you'll get a smaller resulting archive filesize using LZX in that situation.

I've had similar problems you describe in the past using LHA for archives containing thousands of small files.  Extracting the resulting archive has corrupt files warnings.
The latest LHA update (ver 2.11) in July seems to have fixed this problem now.  Available from Aminet.
I've tested it with situations where the old LHA would always fail.  No problems I've found so far with the new one.

and not only smaller sizes, it's faster too on the 020 030 060. on a 040 never have the chance to test.

-edit-
take a look at aminet for the latest version of lzx lha zip unzip, all this running from shell or through dopus. once there was a pkunzip with gui too.
