North, East, South and West! We should all have an Amiga.org get together. Wadda ya'll think? We could have it in Denver where we could all drive or fly equal distances. We could have it this summer and get it all coodinated before hand. It could be an annual event! We could all meet each other and talk miggy! What does everyone think about that?
-
Well saying that a majority of the members live in far off places like Croatia, or the UK, it would probably be kinda rough getting together.
I know myself, I can't attend any type of conference, event at all until I can get a job to make money, so I can afford to go places. Wouldn't that be the way things work out??? I have all the time in the world, but I don't have any type of money to afford gas to go places. When I do get the money, I'm going to have to work all the time to keep my job
-
Yes, unfortunate as it is, we aren't all from the USA ;)
-
I wonder if any countries aside from the US and UK actually have enough active A.Org members to make a get-together worthwhile?
I'd go to anything Amiga-related if it was in NZ, but there don't seem to be many active Amigans here!

Actually there seem to be several Amiga users in NZ, but there are not too many anywhere except the groups in the UK and Germany. The rest of the countries seem to have a handful only of Amiga users left. I have tried to find user local to Southern California (where there used to be many, specially Toaster/Flyer/Lightwave users), but could only find 3 or 4 within a 100 mile radius.
I would enjoy meeting many users from here if any event were to be planned, but won't hold my breath. As an alternate, you are all invited to visit me and my collection at any time. Just give me at least a week or two advance notice. I can probably provide a place to stay as well for a day or two, depending on how many want to visit at the same time.

Is there a Frappr for this community?
That way you could get an instant idea of the numbers near you (if any :( )
-
@Dingo_aus
I think xeron set up something like that, but I think it's on AmigaWorld. I'd attend an Aussie one if I weren't living in the UK like half of Australia, although I'm not in London so there's a small difference ;-)
-
Why are australians living in the UK? :-?
-
I don't want to!
or
I wouldn't want that in a 1000 years!
or
I'm from Croatia!
or
No, I can't put it in a schedule anywhere, this whole year is full for me!
or
Well - hey.
or
Nothing of interest, make subjects, form a news groove, see anyone interesting, then (not) meet.

For the A.org community, not that I know about, we do have a map for people who chat on a.org IRC though.

There is a general Amiga on at:

Oh and back on topic, no Im in the UK, America is a bit far to travel.

Thought Jericho was in Israel :-?

gizmo,
I say go for it!
Just start spilling out some more details about what you have in mind. Don't be deterred by the "nay" sayers alone. If this can't be a global A.org event then perhaps a regional gathering is still possible.

@amigadave
Wow, that has got to suck. You would think that there would be people that would still be into hobby video editing in the good old Silicon Valley land, that use Amigas.
I guess most of them moved on to Windows NT or Macintosh when the Amiga market got 86'ed. I know in Northern Indiana I've met at least 10 people in my city that have been around Amigas and knew quite a bit about them. As I've said in my posts, many times you can find Amiga stuff in the thrift stores around here, and I've learned now that our own Library is crawling with Amigas, no just that one coveted Amiga 4000T running InfoChannel.
-
A gathering is a nice idea. I have to say this community is a friendly bunch. I've also never been able to make it to any cons or shows...but I'm in Australia too. :boohoo:
Oh well, hope some of you in the states can manage a gathering of your clan.
Edit- @amigadave: very generous of you. Thanks very much for the open invitation.
-
*sigh..
I would LOVE to be at a gathering...i think is one of my dreams..
I have never ever in my life been in a Amiga-party or something like that...
Of course...nearest Amiga user lives in Chile (Hi Rod!!)...and i guess im the only Argentinian A.Org member (besides this other guy who now lives in Germany , hppacito or something like that was his nick...)
I would really love to attend one of those meetings for sure...but unfortunately its almost impossible...
I know some brazilians (at least i know 50 Amiga users there), but i have never attended one of their meetings (which are very cool, from what i have read & seen...)

@ Darth_X
It's a good base to look around the rest of the Northern Hemisphere and it's not nearly as bad as POMs like to make it out to be.
-
There was an Amiga convention not less than 2 hours from where I live in Oakland recently and I couldn't get there! :bigcry:
Getting to Colorado would be impossible! If you don't own a car and are not gainfully employed, that's out of my league. I like the idea though!!
-
It could be called 'Amiga.orgy'...
:-)
Great opportunity to play all those Blitzbombers/Dynamite Warriors type games...
Since Amiga.org is so multinational though, maybe we should meet on a transatlantic cruise liner like the QM2. We could dine on fine quisine and discuss life, love and Petro Tyschtenko.
-
@Steady: I'm the other way round, a Pom who has recently settled in the southern hemisphere (NZ).
I'd been wondering why the Brits are called Poms in Australia and New Zealand... Is this (http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-pom1.htm) explanation anywhere near correct?!

uhmmm..... no
no thanks
i have found a few amiga users near me lately which is pretty cool. a gathering would be interesting.
-
KThunder,
Are you saying that there are more than two of us in a 60 mile radius?
How is it going by the way? Hope all is well.
Regards,
AmigaEd

Obviously it would be impossible for us all to get together. There's no way I'm travelling to america just for an amiga meeting.
Even somewhere like the south of england is to far for me to travel.
We could arrange small meetings, so eg, those inthe north of england could get together, as could those in the south, then those in america could etc.

Maybe we could have an official a.org irc meeting once a month? People could congregrate in their local group physically, and all the local groups could link via irc?
-
Good idea.
Then those who can't be bothered to move away from there computers can use IRC at home ;)
Do we have any other members from South Yorkshire?

Thought Jericho was in Israel :-?
I think it's a reference to a song by The Prodigy.
Narayan is a song on the 3rd Album (Fat of the Land) and Jericho is the first song on the 1st Album (Experience).
Also, Hyperspeed is a song on the first album, and the sample at the beginning of that songs starts with "We're moving now at 9 times the speed of sound"
:-D
-
Lenny Kravitz - Uncharted Terrain
"He paved the way for me to follow, Uncharted terrain now had a lane, It's how I got over"
Interestingly that song starts with the dubious words "When I was just a boy, Granddaddy sat me on his knees, he told me that he loved me and we were family".
Sounds like a case for the NSPCC!
:-)

We could do regional get together events!
Seattle, Los Angeles, NY, Miami, Oklamhoma City, etc.
That way it would be easier for some to get there, etc.
-
What would be exciting is to have a Spiritual Night where Amiga owners could join hands around a ouija board and contact the spirit of Jay Miner to determine the future...

Jay Miner would probably look on with disgust at the hardcore amiga comunity. The ouija board would spell things like "Get a life", "move on", and "lol, amiga is dead silly". If Jay Miner were alive today, he would probably delight in firecely trolling amiga related message boards.
-
I don't think we need Jay to tell us that the writing is on the wall...
But, he did predict the future...
"Pretty soon they will have numbers tattooed on our foreheads." - Jay Miner 1990

I think the idea of regional gatherings sounds pretty good...
Is it possible that we could we get more than two people together is the Northeastern States? I might be game for this even if it is only two people.

I would be interested in a NE U.S. regional gathering (coming from Mass).
-
Mass eh? What part? I used to live in Greenfield... My first Amiga experience was using GCTV's studio equipment. Ahh those were the days.
-
@Doc:
I'm in eastern Mass., between Lowell and Beantown. There was a longtime Commodore dealer in Tewksbury named Omnitek
Computers. I bought a Vic-20 and later my first Amiga there. The owner retured about 2 or 3 years ago, but
they still had one room with Amiga 'treasures' until almost the end.

Will there be women?
-
I'm a lady and I wear ladies things!

@InTheSand
I had no idea what it meant till I came to the UK and found out. I originally thought it was a dig at calling British people pompous, but apparantly it is actually P.O.M.E. which is an acronym for Prisoner Of Mother England.
