Title: Broccoli does it again!
Post by: mr_a500 on January 15, 2006, 12:34:44 AM
Back in 1991 the little button on my A500 for removing floppies broke and for years I had to push a pen (or something) in to remove disks. Then a couple years ago I saw a little tie tab on a bunch of broccoli that was the exact size and shape of the broken button and decided to try it. It fit perfectly snugly and has been working great ever since!

A couple months ago I bought a new HD to put in my A500 on my Viper card. Unfortunately, the screw holes on new harddrives does not match with holes on the old ones. So, I tried to attach it with rubber bands, but they either didn't fit or were too thin&stretched and broke when the HD got hot. I just got a thick rubber band off a bunch of broccoli and it is the EXACT size to keep the HD in place without crushing anything or having to double-loop.

Broccoli - is there anything it can't do?

Some people look at broccoli and see only flatulence.... others (like me!) look at broccoli and see Amiga solutions...

Hahahe, hilarious post.  Unfortunately, I loath broccoli.  My mum had a thing of buying only broccoli and carrots when shoopping for vegies.  Oh boy, didn't like it that much to start with, but now I just can't look at the stuff.  Later, my first full time boss wouldn't shut up about the stuff.  I was a resident English teacher in China, and the seniour teacher would always talk about how broccoli is just the best vegetable, as it does everything for you.  Now I know her secret though: she had obviously had a broken Amiga.

I remember when I first put an '030/50 in my A1200 desktop. It started crashing due to overheat. Anyway, I decided to leave off the trapdoor and raise the case an inch or so off the table. So I put four nicely trimmed broccoli spears at each corner and it worked just great. Had to change 'em for fresh ones every week or so, else the case drooped back too much and it would crash again. Carrots work too, but they tend to skid when you type things. The multi-point contact provided by broccoli is perfect for lateral stability and I've never found anything to match it since. Needless to say, I have converted my once lush lawns into broccoli growing areas so I'm never without it. You can get my special non-yellowing broccoli spears on eBay under 'everything else'. Happy bidding!

Someone once said they "bottled a fart that poisoned half of Dublin". Well, I've heard of a fart that shattered all the windows in central Toronto (not really). The shockwave ripped through town faster than the speed of smell. In the outlying rural areas, grazing herds of sheep were so startled that some sheep attempted to climb the trees in a vain attempt to escape the sound.

What's your secret? My broccoli always starts going yellow after a couple years. I tried bleach and other cleansers, but they just don't work. Dang! Isn't that always the case? You buy good broccoli and expect it to stay the same colour for years, but then it goes yellow on you. I kept it away from smoke and everything! I know it doesn't affect the function of the broccoli, but it just looks bad and affects the resale value.

Whah! didn't laugh that way for months !

I'm very angry/hungry (who knows): i had to sell my 3000 on ebay as i couldn't find a 220v power supply for my beloved machine.

I just had to:

1)Eat broccoli
2)Wait some minutes
3)turn the fan of the power supply beside me
4)fart as possible into the fan
5)then fan will begin to turn
6)an electric current will be generated by the fan
7)turn on the power of the amiga
8)Yes ! IT BOOT !
9)fart enough to see workbench screen (very hard) !

Another amiga salvaged
Broccoli did it yeah !

Who want to try ??

For years as I was growing up I hated the insipid, dark grey-green overcooked boiled broccoli, which was all I ever tried.

When I eventually tried cooking it for myself - just steam it for 5-10 minutes...   Mmmmmmmmmmm   lush, crisp vivid green broccoli!!!  Delicious!!

A long time ago, they used to extract a white pigment from broccoli for use in printing inks, cosmetics, plastics and such. The only problem was, like broccoli itself, the colour soon changed to a mucky yellow. There's strong evidence that this very broccoli white was used in the construction of A1200 cases. The rest as they say, is history.

hmmmmm.....I reckon they used the pigment more in the earlier Amiga's cause the 1200s don't yellow very much, well none of mine have, but all my 500's are slightly off colour, not yellow though. And especially one of my 600s is as ripe as a bannana!

If you look at a pack of cards the 'Spades' as they call they are actually peices of Brocoli you'know!

What? You can't be serious. The most you can do with a pancake is maybe use it as a mouse pad - and I use a trackball! Come on - pancakes aren't even a vegetable!

By the way, if your broccoli has gone yellow and you want it white you can just paint it. Don't bother with bleaches, just spray on a primer and use some white paint - no worries about yellow broccoli again. My broccoli now looks shiny and brand new. ;-)

Yes, that's my current setup, but I went back to my old 56K modem. The newer one - like most new (non-broccoli) computer parts - was crap and died after a few months.

I eat broccoli about once or twice a week. There's a broccoli farm (or "grow-operation") near my house. It's legal to smoke broccoli in Canada, but most people don't because it's too difficult to ignite.

That's because it's been changed by selective breeding for use in electronics. Few people these days remember its original applications. Long before the invention of the Amiga (which catalysed the Broccoli Breeding Campain - now known as the 'BBC') the vegetable was much more flammable. Broccoli smoking in Canada is a reminder of the almost global use of broccoli to provide heating. This bygone age preceeds the invention of coal and even peat by several thousand years. Shortly after man discovered fire, he needed something to do with it. Over hundreds of years trying different things, primitive man eventually discovered the lowly broccoli plant. At that time, its little florets were flammable due to the natural oils which evaporate from them. That's how wild boars knew how to locate it in the heavily wooded terrain of Central Europe and North America. They couldn't get enough of the heady vapours. It's also where the expression, 'Oh, you're such a broccoli boar' comes from. Anyway, broccoli burning became as essential as breathing and eventually it powered the Industrial Revolution. As the broccoli age continued, new varieties were developed and even edible types were invented. These were dark green in colour, as distict from the primitive white, which was lost to science until quite recently. The pale green intermediate genus retains some flammability and gained great popularity in Northern regions as a smoking fuel and telecommunication aid. Being too distant from the broccoli and tobacco growing areas of Virginia, the North American and Canadian indians had to smoke ground up boar dung in their peace pipes. There was never any fighting because the digested broccoli oils in the dung made everyone happy. All that changed when the French arrived and spread the word about the new pyrobroccolis. From then on, broccoli smoking was the norm and persists to this day in the French speaking areas of Canada. Its popularity stems from the addictive oils, which unlike niccotine, have no health risks other than the tendency to make the user very boring. So the next time you call someone a 'Broccoli boar'- sometimes misused as 'Broccoli bore' - think about the origins of the expression. You could even retell the history of broccoli because it's not boring at all.

@JaXanim

Yes, of course. You're right. Somehow I had forgotten about broccoli history. I don't know why. Like all Canadians, I took a broccoli history class in school when I was young. I still have my old text book "A History of Modern Broccoli".

Few people know that the expression "May a smile be your umbrella" is derived from the old expression, "May a broccoli be your umbrella". Back in the middle ages, broccoli was much bigger and people actually used them as umbrellas. Unfortunately, these large broccoli pieces were very heavy to carry around and many people got horribly injured in "broccoli accidents" when they got tired and dropped it. The mechanical umbrella was then invented and this usage thankfully died out.

It's strange to think that it was only in the computer age that broccoli's true usefulness was discovered.

I am sure you are aware that broccoli accidents are not the only problems associated with the green umbrella of old. Far from indeed.

I had a spot of broccoli over the weekend.

Since then, both my A1200T and A1XE have started working and are now networked.

I ask you all honestly, can this really be any coincidence?

And let us not forget the most admirable banana tree, a lovely addition to any amiga collection (trainable, loves to play, and very good with children).  It should be noted that it is the same color as broccoli, and has very fashionable black tiger stripes on the leaves.

Ah! Someone must have ate their broccoli breakfast (According to Google:    9:22am Tuesday (CEST) - Time in Netherlands) today! ;-)  Detecting subliminal verbiage is an acquired skill ( much like broccoli eating :-) )

But yeah, how do you think Maiden they got them killer guitar riffs? It wasn't all Steve Harris ya know.  As a matter of fact, Bruce Dickinson's real name was Broccoli Dickinson* (Bruce, Broccoli, see the similarities?), but he had to change it otherwise someone might have gotten suspicious and accused them!

* In some circles he was know as Bruce "The Broccoli" Dickinson, but don't let that escape your mouth, OK?

It's indeed an amazing anthracomorphobiological construct!

It's a common misconception that elastic bands are placed around the stems of broccoli to stop it from falling apart. The reality is that the broccoli is used to protect the elastic bands after production.

Notice how the game puts an emphasis on how disgusting sprouts are, not about how great they are. Nobody feels that way about broccoli as it's common knowledge, even amongst deniers such as yourself that have joined the true bottom ranks of society that actually like sprouts, that broccoli is, always has been and always will be the true green of greatness and undeserving of such ridicule. It is only your intractable guilt at having soiled yourself with the vile sprout that you feel you are no longer worthy of the great broccoli that leads you to this denial. It's easier to pretend broccoli is not the one true green veg than it is to admit your desperate yearning to return from whence you have fallen.

A sorry state indeed.

Incidentally, the game is quite amusing :)

Sir, whilst I have the utmost respect and affection for broccoli, you must concede, my learned friend, that Asparagus is truly the greatest of all vegetables.
It's elastic bands are superior (having served me in ways to numerous to recall), however I concede that it does not have the floppy-drive-eject-button-stylee plastic tab.

Asparagus is so good, that I personally class it as an honorary meat.

Ha, what poppycock, bilge, fiddle and fuss!

Half you scallywags wouldn't know an honest vegetable if it rose up out of the ground and ensconced itself in your lower colon!
When broccoli was at the crossroads of the evolutionary choice between dinosaur snot and flea pustules, sprouts had already taken over the realm of all flora as the most nutritious vegetable there is. In fact it is in homage to this great vegetable that even your own testicles have attempted to emulate their shape. The last thing I saw that looked like a broccoli, dear sir, was a purulent oozing venereal scab on the labia majora of a woman of ill repute!

And as for asparagus...ha! A most foul vegetable, with no merit, no substance, and a tendency to resemble a limp boiled squid's penis. I have to ask you, sir, what sort of nefarious chicanery you are imbued with, by championing such a vile, reeking tendril of pus?

Nay, I say verily...all else is twaddle, fiddlesticks and high jinx dipped in buffoonery.
The sprout is king and that is all there is to it. Let he who wants to be the first to experience an awakened existence, admit to all here that he has been saved by the sprout!

Try broccoli just at least just boiled with a sprinkle of extra-virgin olive oil (be sure is is extra-virgin quality) and lemon juice, and a pick of salt over a blank piece of bread... Simply and Delicious at same time...

It is the way we eat it as a broccoli salad in Italy...

And by the way here is my pleasure to introduce you FRIARIELLI...

It is a kind of broccoli it sprouts and grown only in the Naples surrounding (my homeplace)...

It is different from broccoli as it tastes "bitter" so it overcome totally the simple broccoli.

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friarielli

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapini

It is perfect to be made fried!

It is a perfect companion for sausages...

And when you taste Salsicce (sausages) with Friarielli, then best drink is a very refreshing cooold beer...

(P.S. often people like this recipe with grains of chili pepper)

http://italicious.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/salsicce-e-friarielli/

If some of you have in program a vacancy to Naples, it will be my pleasure to offer you a pizza with Mozzarella, Salsicce e Friarielli.

I must shamefully admit that I've had a... (ahem)... broccoli failure. Yes, that's right. Surprisingly, it is possible to have broccoli failures. I call it "premature floweration". It happens when the head of the broccoli... bursts (or ejaculates) into flowers before it's supposed to. Well, this happened to me, I'm sorry to say. Four of my broccoli plants are now small and useless. (as useless as a limp dick)

Luckily, I've got another batch coming up that have nice big... heads. I've got big hopes for them.

Without the broccoli, these items wouldn't have been created in the first place. Clever scientists sat back and said, "Damn, we need something to hold this broccoli together - and fast - or we're in for a load of shit." So they put the ebola cure on hold and got to work.

I have a hunch that Wayne may be investing his 10k in a broccoli farm..

I don't want to alarm anybody, but something scary has happened... very scary indeed. My broccoli has turned... purple! I'm not joking - this is an actual unaltered picture:

I've heard of a variety of broccoli that is purple, but this is a green broccoli that went purple. I think it has to do with the purple cabbage that surrounds it. Some of my green cabbage went a bit pink too. (the purple cabbage was always purple ;))

Notice the broccoli piece on the left. It has purple "veins" and purple top. On the right is a relatively non-purpled green broccoli piece from a broccoli plant that was farther away from the purple cabbage:

I ate all these broccoli last night for supper (except a few I kept for Amiga hardware upgrades). If I turn purple, I'll let you know.

From my experience growing other plants, if they go purple it can be a sign of root rot or frostbite. I didn't grow broccoli though.

Football season approaches (USA) . You know what I'm gonna have on my MF veggie tray? That's right MF Broccoli !

So, every time the Pittsburgh Steelers score you have to eat a hand full of Broccoli and chug a beer.

:drink:

Hi,

@TheGoose,

Huh!

The only thing Pittsburgh Steeler fans eat is kilbosi, and we know that for a fact, but just think we might be on to something here, a kilbosi, broccoli sandwich with sweet peppers and onions covered in ketchup.

Broccoli periogies anyone,

hey instead of potato pancakes, how about broccoli pancakes.

Will all this go good with beer?

Pittsburgh Stealers, that is how they won their super bowls so their name is good.

You didn't grow any broccoli?! Shocking. Did those sprout people get to you too? ;)

No, it's not frostbite. They started going purple when it was still 20°C. It's not root rot either. This is good, well drained soil (one of the best vegetable growing areas in all of Canada) and it hasn't rained that much. There are broccoli plants in gardens on either side of this one that are completely green.

I like broccoli and I like perogies, but if I found broccoli inside a perogie, I'd probably scream and whip it out the nearest window. (then dive for cover before it exploded... all in slow motion, of course)

Beer? Broccoli doesn't go with beer! Are you crazy? You need a fine wine - a cabernet sauvignon (from 2001 or 2005... or at least before the "25 questions from Bill McEwen"). Then you need to light some candles, sit back in a velvet Victorian smoking jacket (doesn't matter if you don't smoke) and make bland witty comments in a pompous British accent. At least that's how I do it.

This warrants a gratuitous pearoast!

I don't think you could outrun a broccoli explosion of that magnitude...

Hi,

You are right about that, Sir, it is a much underestimated veggy.

Broccoli
Broccoli is a Super Food.

New research suggests that broccoli is especially good for the stomach(1,2).

Broccoli and cancer risk
A compound found in broccoli and broccoli sprouts appears to be more effective than modern antibiotics against the bacteria which causes peptic ulcers. Moreover, tests in mice show that the compound offers tremendous protection against stomach cancer - the second most common form of cancer in the world.

The recent study, led by scientists at Johns Hopkins University, is the latest in a series of studies done in the past 10 years on the cancer-fighting potential of broccoli. (1,2)

Back in 1992, Johns Hopkins University pharmacology professor Paul Talalay and his colleagues showed that sulforaphane - a substance produced by the body from a compound in broccoli - could trigger the production of phase II enzymes. Phase II enzymes can detoxify cancer-causing chemicals and are among the most potent anti-cancer compounds known to man.

I am so glad to get my veggie thread today. Steamed broccoli and melted cheese is awesomely good.

Did you know that broccoli actually rules over all other green veggies. It's only nemesis is yellow corn which surprisingly has a nullifying effect much like the comic heroes Green Lantern and his nemesis the Yellow Lantern. To eat both at the same time can either have a sum zero effect in your gut, or cause the mother of all legendary comic book battles.

Wow! I'm so glad to see this thread again! Just like locating a long lost friend. Kind of brings a tear to my eye (sorry for the potato reference)!

Had something green with lunch posing as string beans... wish I'd had broccoli instead!

Not sure if this was previously posted but a second time can't hurt...
