Title: Installing Bvision?
Post by: nasty on January 14, 2006, 01:37:03 PM
Well i took my Voodoo3 out yesterday and replaced it with the bvision. so I fitted the bvision in the PT made sure it was all secure. did a fresh install 3.1 Installed my ppc drivers followed by the bvision setup disk, then installed OS3.9,mui,warp3d and checked the CGX screenmodes they were all there, which they where.then i went to the CGXMode to edit the modes and double clicked on it got an error message "could not open gadget.lib blah blah" so I added the lib to my libs drawer and then clicked it again and it listed all the screenmodes so i edited one and hit test, it said "couldnt open test screen" so then i checked my screenmodes again and they where all gone apart from the PAL screenmodes. so I rebooted the amiga and then got

makedir failed returncode 10
makedir failed returncode 10

then workbench loads with only the PAL screenmodes.

so anyone got any idea what went wrong?

Old CGX doesn't work with exec version number > 40.

There is a patcher program included in exec44 archive (http://www.iki.fi/sintonen/sw/exec44beta4.lha) called cgx44fixer.

Quote

Some software explicitly check for V40 and think V44 is *older* than
V40. Luckily such broken software is very rare. These programs include
CyberGraphX software (only upto cgxv42_r2_pre8). Here is how you can fix
   it:

     > cd libs:
     > copy clone cgxsystem.library cgxsystem.library.backup
     > cgx44fixer cgxsystem.library
     cgx44fixer by Harry "Piru" Sintonen
     patch 0: offset: 0x0243E0
     patch 1: offset: 0x025C86
     cgxsystem.library patched succesfully.

(Note: offsets vary with different cgxsystem.library versions!)

If there should be any problems with the patched cgxsystem.library just
restore the backup. Without this patch the displayinfo database is
wrong and you can't see any CGFX modes in screenmode requesters.

UPDATE: The latest pre-release of CGX V4.2 (cgxv42_r2_pre11) finally
fixes this problem, and thus you no longer need this patch. Hooray! :-)

V45 (3.9) exec has the same issue.

Yup, unlike cgx v3, cgx v4 is a commercial piece of software, hence you need to buy it.

Well it looks like Im gona spend abit of time in the loft going through the bags and bags of amiga cd's and floppys to see if its there.

Since i dont have any manuals with the bvision is there anything i need to change in the settings to get the warp gears to work with the bvision like i have to change in powerpc settings for the mediator or does it just sort itself out.

My BVision worked fine with the CGX that came with OS3.5 (ther was a version of CGX3 shipped on a floppy with the card but I only needed the driver component there). I've never had any problems getting it to work (bar the fact my first one had a faulty memory block annoyingly situated in the 4-6 MB range).

However, I did buy CGX 4, simply because I wanted to keep up to date and make sure any RTG coding I did worked on CGX3 and 4. Under OS3.x I've never had any trouble with CGX.

@Karlos

Ah cool, then it should work with OS 3.9 assuming you use cgx44fixer.

I can't see any reason why not, no. Having said that, I had a working OS3.9 partition running CGX v4 (alas I formatted it recently as I planned to split it up into two smaller bootable partitions for testing with P96 and CGX) and never noticed any problems there either. Am I missing something here?

@Karlos

You're missing the fact that it was fixed for CGX4 in cgxv42_r2_pre11. This and later versions don't have any problem with exec version > 40.

Another option is that you don't have a replacement exec enabled in your OS 3.9 setup.

It's entirely possible. I'm not so sure of the details of that installation anymore; as it was used for testing purposes, the configuration changed a lot.

Hi,

I'm having the same issue - no screenmodes other than the boggy PAL ones in the screenmode requester.

Do you know where I can get this update from?

It appears to have been available here (http://www.vgr.com/meanmachine/cgxv42_r2_pre11.lha) at some point, but that's now a 404... :-(

Karlos: I recently cured what I thought was a bad memory block between 60MB-64MB on a SIMM by cleaning the contacts. By magic the SIMM can be fully utilised as though there was oxidisation stopping a good contact.

I've seen a CyberVision PPC giving graphical glitches due to what the owner thinks is a dead memory chip but it's possible that it could be just a tarnished contact.

I thought the contacts on these boards were supposed to be gold, they're more like brass!
