Title: agp, pci ?
Post by: lionstorm on April 07, 2003, 11:30:55 AM
hi all,
As I dont know much about gfx port on the pc, I ask here the following question : does an agp geforce2 card fits in a pci slot ?
Why I am asking : my brother is selling me one and I was wondering if I could plug it in one of the pci adaptors in our amiga world.

Hi

No it won't fit.  Even if it did fit into the slot there are no drivers for it (only for S3 Virge and Voodoo boards)

 :-D Nice brother  :-D  even if it did physically fit, the power settings is also different. sorry.

No.
This picture shows the difference between the AGP ( brown ) and PCI ( white ) ports:

@lionstorm

GF2 & GF4 graphic cards exist in PCI as well as AGP format. That means, if you have a GeForce2 PCI card, you can plug it in PCI slot. The PCI graphic cards are less supported this day in PC world than AGP ones - can't predict about Amiga world but I would stick to recommended cards for compatibility reasons and better driver support.

Thanks I think I keep my eyes opened for a pci voodoo3-3000 gfx card for my forthcoming A1 and let my brother play with his card.

Untrue.  AGP 2x has the same power load as PCI.  Only with 4x did the power needs change.

@Lionstorm:

Why are you looking for a PCI card for your AOne?  Are you looking for a multi monitor setup?  Doesn't the AOne have an AGP slot?

@ downix

I think you'll find that the power needs changed only with AGP 8x, not 4x.

IIRC the A1 has a 2xAGP port.

@ sdesros
well to be honest, I could plug it into this pc I got for free from work (P200, 64Mb ram) or into one of the 2 alphastation255 I got from work too because all 3 machines have basic gfx card (AS255 have cirrus logic and no idea for the pc but I am sure it is a basic 2D card). My long term plan is to connect these 3 machines plus my A1200T, all running debian linux and play doom, quake or multiplayers amigagames through uae.

@downix

just because i like to nitpick :-D , the PCI slot provide 3.3V and 5V signaling. as far as i remember the PCI 2.2 (66MHz) uses 3.3V but supports a roll back to 33MHz@5V.

never mind that. it's a bit off topic anyways.  :-)

Relative to what? It's obvious the guy who started this thread didn't know what an AGP slot looks like, so pointing out the type of slot, and where it usually is (never BELOW a PCI slot), is helpful information :-)

So because it's a desktop machine you're suddenly allowed to plug the AGP card in the wrong way round?

Well, it's not prohibited... :-D
Anyway, it actually depends on how you're looking at the board. Say it lies on a table, then? :-)

What if two swallows were to carry the board upside down?

African or European swallows?

@mikeymike

I checked the spec, to verify.

AGP 4x is 1.8v with a rollback to 3.3v.  8x forces you to use the lower voltage.

so AGP 8x is when the power *needs* *changed* then :-)
