Greetings,
I am wondering if it is worth the purchase of OS3.9 for my A1200. I have a 40mhz 030 and 16meg fast ram, so will I be able to reasonable use AVI/Quicktime videos and mp3 music??
How much data is loaded onto the cd of os 3.9?? I ask because I do not have a cd drive for my amiga, but I have been moving files from pc to amiga via a 512mb compact flash card. Can I copy all contents of cd to CF and proceed with the OS install this way??
Thanks in advance!

You could get the CD and copy the files to your flash card on the PC. 512mb is more than enough space for it.
-
I think the minimum space required for the install was 20 MB - I did create a test backup installation on RAD: and it did fit in about 10 MB.

...and how will you do with the Boingbags? They look for a valid CD. Or can you point it to the Flashcard in some way? :-)

Don`t even try anything of that unless you have an 68060, better a PPC. For MP3 playback an 68040 @ 40 MHz is barely sufficient if you leave the hand away from mouse and keyboard.

@Nitro
have the same prob here, coz 3.9 was copied over ethernet. but how to cheat boingbag installer?
It seems to be fixed to cd.device :evil:
assign CD0: to another location doeznt wrk

Aw, come on... It's fun to try it at least once, even if you'll never do it again :)
I can play some little Cinepak videos in greyscale and MP3s at the lowest quality with my A2630.

@Chain
I`ve read somewhere that Boingbags and can be extracted and installed manually.
-
@Nitro, hmm yeah perhaps that is possible.
@dear1700, get yourself a Delfina (http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/photo.pl?id=delfinaflipper)and you have no problems with mp3's :-)

Assigning AmigaOS3.9: instead of CD0: works for me.

A singing OS3.9 - that must be the Christmas version, eh ;)

Sort of.. The actual updates are in a password protected zip file, the updater generates the password based on the contents of some of the audio/video files on the 3.9 CD.
Like Flashlab said, assign the actual volume name of the 3.9 CD to point at the network mounted CD (eg. via Samba/SMBFS to the CD drive in Windows) and it'll work fine.

Couldn't I just copy all contents to said flash card, then rename is the same thing as the CD (i.e. AmigaOS3.9 ??) Since the amiga would look for the device name and not the volume, right??
Is that Delfina a zorro card?? So, would the upgrade just provide a "pretty" workbench that would eat up all my chip ram then, huh. Would it really slow the system down that web browsing would be annoying at best??
-
OS 3.9 ist not just Eyecandy, so it could make sense after all, but don`t even think about Webbrowsing without a GFX-card. If you got an 060 browsing on PAL might be bearable as dithering to 256 colors is acceptable fast enough then, but it will still look very ugly.

Edit the installer files perhaps?
OT: 1000th post! Woo hoo!
