Title: Cleaning battery corrosion???
Post by: gdanko on December 21, 2005, 02:22:52 PM
Last night I acquired an A2000. It is in working order but there is a little battery corrosion. I disassembled it and removed the battery. The corrosion has not spread far but it's kind of thick. I have two questions regarding the corrosion.

1) Will the existing corrosion continue to spread and cause further damage to the board?
2) What is the best way to remove it?

Thanks :)

A common mistake is that the leak is ACID, it is infact an alkaline: Potassium Hydroxide. This is a corrosive base. The way to neutralize the leakage, after removing the battery, is to wash the affected area with a solution containing a 50/50 mixture of (white) vinegar and pure distilled/deionised water. Scrub carefully with an old toothbrush, and then rinse with pure water and force dry with a hair dryer on low.

It will spread or atleast corrode the affected area!  This happened to my Amiga.  I removed the battery and thought I cleaned good enough onlyu to find a year later it corroded the traces and ruined a few.  It showed up as blue corrosion.  Clean it good asap.
