I've just bought (or rather, ordered) an AmigaOneG3-SE from Eyetech and I'd like to ask if anyone knows a graphics card that can be used with both LinuxPPC and AmigaOS4.0? I've been offered a 64mb Voodoo 4500 card for £30 - would this do? Will it make a difference if the card is AGP or PCI?
Also, can someone point me to a good Linux site for novices?
Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't remember well, but I think someone asked something similar to BenHermans and he said a Radeon.
The drivers for the Voodoos are for the Vodoo3 I think, and are not optimized for the 5/4000 models. And they probably never will since NVidia bought the maker of the Voodoo cards and developer information is not what it was.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong though, maybe there are now drivers based on open source ones for Linux or something...
And a Radeon performs better anyway:)

I know this probably doesnt answer your question,
Actually I know it doesnt answer it.
But I was wondering why your nickname is EDS.bod?
With regards to your other Questions,
no idea on the Vodoo 4500 but I am going to get a ATI Readon 8500, which is being provided with the full systems so it is bound to work on both OS4 and Linux.

I would simply wait because it is not clear which gfx will be supported besides the one already supported by W3D (permedia2 and vodoo3). On hyperion ml Frieden brother (dont remember which one) wrote gfx cards drivers are not done by hyperion anymore but by 3rd parties so I would wait for an official statement from Ainc on this or get a cheap vodoo3.

Hi
IIRC Amiga Inc have agreement with Matrox to bundle AmigaOne with the latest generation of its graphic card (Parhelia / G450/ G550?). But on their website, Eyetech mention ATI cards. Is the Matrox agreement still valid?
Thank's.

The Radeon seems to be the one to go for - I believe they will be supporting all models up to the 8500 for now. The best price I've seen for this in the UK is from crucial - here (http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listmfgr.asp?cat=Video+Card). It's 71.90 + Vat (84.48) including free delivery and their web discount.
Have fun with your One!

Now that the AmigaONE boards are selling (and shipping soon) I think it would be a good idea for someone to say what gfx cards are actually being supported.
I mean we all know that ATI and Matrox are supposed to be supported, but there is no real idea as to what models are fully supported etc.
Hmmm, think I might email Fleecy see if he can chat to Ben and find out. (Unless anyone knows Ben H's email addy!)

GFX Card support:
Voodoo3:
2d: Full Support
3d: Full Support
Voodoo4/5:
2d: Full Support
3d: V3 Mode - runs @ Voodoo3 speed but more GFX RAM
ATI Radeon (All)
2d: Full Support
3d: Full support upto 7500,.
The 8500 upwards will run, but only use features of the 7500 until W3D NG is released.
NVidia:
2d: None ATM, potential to exist however
3d: Aint a chance in hell - NVidia says kiss my arss
Matrox:
AGP Models only (and PCI equivalents)
2d: Full Support
3d: Upto the limitations of W3D (current version) until next generation W3D is released.
Personally I'm starting off with a Voodoo3 (With massive cooler and super overclocking) until W3D V2 is released then I'll buy the 9700 Pro card or maybe better.......
AGP is of course recommended because of the faster bandwidth (500mb/sec approx, compared to 128mb/sec approx PCI), and also texturing DMA operations capability.

O.k., Looks like I might go for the Voodoo 4500 for now and upgrade later but what I really want to know, now that the compatibility with the A1 and OS4.0 is sorted out, is will the Voodoo work with LinuxPPC?

They ain't so bad!
Amiga Inc. probably has that in their basement.
heh. :-o
But to be serious though.
Sure they need us.
a few hundred here.
a few hundred there.
That's how they got to where they are.
and by the way...
Bill Gates needs to give Amiga Inc and Hyperion a couple of million dollars each for charity.

I had an email from Ben and he says that they will be putting a list up, he said there is a reason why such a list isnot up yet, but wouldn't go into any further details. The only ones he is prepared to say go and get are the ATI Radeons (didn't say which models tho so I would assume 7500/8500)
Plus you can pick up a 7500 for about £45 these days (approx $71)
