Title: any free Telnet progs. for 68K Amigas?
Post by: marcfrick2112 on December 21, 2005, 10:16:07 AM
Hello all, Thanks to Much help from several Amiga.org members,
I can now get online with my miggy. Last hurdles, E-Mail and Telnet..
Anyone have any ideas for a free Telnet program for Classic Amigas?
I have an A1200T, 68060 @ 50MHz, 128MB Fast, 2MB Chip (of course) Genesis
RA (from OS3.9) OS 3.9 w/BB2, 8.5 GB HD (IDE). My ISP is earthlink.
Tried AmTelnet, a commercial program, but  couldn't even get to work in DEMO mode.
With help, got my PC working with Telnet thru HyperTerm (Yuck!)
Is there any option for Amiga? I just want to ditch my PC for Net use,
as my miggy has a nice 20" monitor, incorporated with my VCR's and DVD,
 and Stereo sys., and just a lot cooler

Any Help would be great!

Ncomm 3

Term 4.3

...are very good Terminal/Telnet programms.
Just a matter of personal taste.

Try to use artser.device instead of serial.device - it's faster!

Try DCTelnet, it's on Aminet.

@humppa
Those are terminal apps, you'd need to combine them with telser.device if you need telnet.

I really like napsaterm that comes with AmiTCP. I'm not sure but it might be included in AmiTCP 3.0b (http://www.funet.fi/pub/amiga/gnu/tcpip/) that is available to download for free.

*edit*
Just checked, it's on AmiNet (http://www.aminet.net) atleast.

NapsaTerm doesn't do color, but it's very speedy, especially noticable on AGA machines. And it's the only telnet client I have found that works with most everything (CenterICQ, {bleep}X ...)

@Golem!dk

You're right, I wasn't sure because he also mentioned HyperTerminal. You could use them for both, although strictly speaking, they are no telnet apps.

Hey everyone, thanks for the help. Re: napasterm,  I take it, that its just an Executable file that I run....it it hard to set up/use?  I ask only 'cause Genesis can be a pain to set up...was only able to get it up and running with *much* help from Amiga.org members..

Näpsäterm is just unpack and run. No setting up.

You need a TCP/IP stack running first, though. :-)

Can Genesis be a pain to set up? That surprises me. Back in the days I used Miami and Miami DX, which I now consider being way to slow to fill my needs, and those were really easy to set up. When moving on to the much faster Genesis, I had just as little problems with setting that one up as I had with Miami & Miami DX.

But maybe I've been lucky, don't know, to not have stumbled upon any problems on the way. If it hadn't been for AmiTCP throwing up an ugly splash each time started, I would have considered going for that one instead (can one even get hold of a license as of today, by the way?), but if I were to do that I  guess I would be confonted with some issues considering the set up. AmiTCP would actually be to prefer... because for some reason Genesis makes WB not being able to update correctly, on the fly, when certain setting in the prefs are changed. Annoying.

Oh, well, anyways.
