Title: What games to play on the AmigaOne:-)
Post by: Helgis75 on April 06, 2003, 03:33:20 PM
Hi, what games do you want to play on the new AmigaOne? I want to play brand new games:

These should be:

Sin
Soldier Of Fortune
Jedi Knight 1 & 2
The Feeble Files
Leisure Suit Larry Trilogy

As well as classic Amiga-games! Can't wait to test the speed of the 800Mhz G4 on the A1G4XE!!! :-)

Otherwise, i will do some serious work on it, like designing 3D-graphic, writing documents and buring CDs, as well as composing music.  :-)

I would love an up to date version of MAME now
that we have the computing power it requires!

Amidog ported it to WarpOS so it will run under OS4 anyway. Not the latest version admitidly but there is so much stuff on his site I cant wait to have a play with under OS4.

@ Helgis

I'd like to see :

Mat Hoffman / Dave Mirra BMX
BMX XXX
Tony Hawks
GTA Vice City
Mafia
Fifa 2003

I'm a bit fed up off 1st person doom clones.  I get my 1st person fix from Quake and Gloom Deluxe.

Question is who is gonna port them.

None of the big boys will be interested until the userbase hits at least the 100,000 to 250,000 mark.

One Game I urge you to buy is Payback. Sorry I cant rave enough about this game and I'm sure it will rock under OS4.

Emulators helge! , thats what i want most of...like mame, supernintendo emu's , genesis*/megadrive etc... , why? ..because they are so slow on my excisting setup.

for a top game...well either tony hawk (either one of em) or uNREAL tOURNAmENt (the first one will do for me).

besides that....well a decent drive em up game wouldn hurt , like ignition (uds , 1997)  or wipeout styled rollcage...or what ever...as long as its fast on that setup and the gfx is enought to get other people ...like hey its cool!...

beyond that.... it wouldnt have hurted with more AMIGA ONLY titles...but i guess unreal tournament would be one of the most awaited titles on our amiga... more than Q2 anyway :9

come on....drive em ups is what most peoeople wants... and ofcourse emuls...as they will keep ya busy for a long time... like MAME ...

Payback. A port of GTA Vice City would be cool, but I can't see that coming just yet. There's also Sin, Shogo etc from Hyperion.

Other games I would like to see ported:
Warlords Battlecry (don't care which number in the series, both 1 and 2 are _dead_ ringers for each other as far as I am concerned. I guess the codebase is really similar, just more monsters in the sequel)

I always wanted to have the Hidden & Dangerous series. It was a relatively unknown game for PC terms, but it has a very dense atmosphere through the clever use of sound effects. There is an updated version with improvements to the engine, and the sequel is coming later this year.

Nice list but BMX Xxx is just the bottom of bmx games ever. California Games' bmx-section is more fun to play than BMX Xxx :-)

No-one will (probably) never port any of those games for Amiga platform.

Payback runs very nicely on Amithlon .. will be interesting to see it run on A1 and Pegasos

Well, what about Doom 3 and Quake 4!!

And not ported but released by ID software and Raven software themselves. That would be the coolest thing and the most news catching in the whole gaming world.

But back into reality.... I'd like to play all games ported so far like Quake and Quake 2 and Shogo and everything else ported by Hyperion.

Do you think Hyperion will acquire this license or will you spin off your own video game company to do this?

I think Last Ninja would be cool.

As for new games "Devil May Cry2.." even the Playstion 2 has some great games that would be great ported over to the Amiga.

I been experimenting with PGEN on the PS2, which is a Sega emulator.. now if Amiga could release an Amiga Emulator to run on Playstation2 that would bring in a few more crowds.

I am still hoping to do my own games in the future, so if there would be a spin-off company, we'd be doing our own games, not ports ;-) We've got all these ideas and stuff...

Needless to say at the moment we're not going to acquire any licence because we simply don't have the time, but who knows what may happen in the future.

@rogue:

Your comment sparked my interest (never really heard of the game, then again I don't follow it all that closely), but the demo is quite bugged it seems (not to mention some very silly language errors). How's the full game in terms of stability? (Some of the reviews I've flicked through also complained about bugs).

Yeah, the original version was very buggy. Most if not all of them have been resolved in later patches, and the Deluxe Edition (with the improved engine and mission editor) is practically free of it. There are still a few quirks in the AI (meaning that if your team members are computer-controlled, they might occasionally take detours that are hard to explain).

In the earlier versions, you could also easily fall through the floor, resultion in you popping up sky-high and falling to your death. That has been resolved in the meantime.

About the language, yes, I first played the german version and it also had some stupid bugs (sometimes "tank" means tank, not an armoured vehicle :-) ) Also, the german version had all Nazi symbols removed (displaying those is prohibited in Germany), and enemies killed turned into backpacks instead of corpses. The new version can switch to english language...

Other than that, the game is great, especially in multiplayer. The use of sound effects makes for a very good moody game

It certainly does. At one time I was playing a game on the PC when I suddenly noticed that I had left it on. The G3 version can theoretically run without active cooler. A graphics card can be equipped with a heatpipe cooler. That would only leave the harddrive and PSU, But both are louder than the cooler on my G4, anyway...

Hi, what games do you want to play on the new AmigaOne?

Unreal Tournament 2003**. AmigaOne with ~800Mhz processor, 64MB (SD)RAM and ATI Radeon 9000(DirectX8/OpenGLv1.4 class GPU) should be enough to match the X-BOX's level of performance.

**X-BOX level system requirements. X-BOX edition may not as rich/bloated/obese/excessive as WinPC edition but it should enable similar experience.

Also note that, AmigaOne with ~800Mhz processor, 64MB (SD)RAM, ATI Radeon 9000(DirectX8/OpenGLv1.4 class GPU) and SB-Live should be enough to run any similar level X-Box games.

IF Eyetech release PPC edition of X-BOX level spec within/or around the “Amiga500” market segment such a machine may do quite well i.e. small footprint OS + home/small office PC + X-Box level gaming capability. (Perhaps based around Eyetech’s cheaper AmigaOneG3Lite(?) platform).

Alternatively, AmigaOne with 600Mhz processor, 64MB RAM and ATI Radeon 7500 should be more than enough to run Nintendo’s Game Cube level games.

@Hammer

You don't want 64Mb - get a big wedge while it's cheap. Go for 256 or 512MB :-D

Then pee on the XBOX :-)

Alledgedly, DOOM-3 is under consideration for the XBOX, so maybe a decent A1XE with Radeon9000 class GPU will cope too...

the games i  want
Civilization 3
Sin
Knights of the sky (updated for amigaone, it´s the best flight simulator ever)
Eye of the beholder style RPGs( not isometric 3d from above itsn´t  a really rpg if you are watching from the Dune viewing angel)
some good beatem ups
And let´s revive the 2Dplatform games in 24bit glory
Quake 3/4

You don't want 64Mb

My statement was factoring in a PPC edition of “Amiga500” targeted home PC with good level gaming experience and price (or close to it).

This formula works with the Amiga in past i.e. a leisure PC which fits between the consoles and X86 Window PCs.

256MB or 512MB is nice, but factoring the potential cost of lower class AmigaOne motherboard; other cutdown maybe required. I really do wish that the Amiga’s main investors to have a successful venture.

I do missed Amiga500’s characteristics i.e. click-and-go gaming*, home/school PC*, relatively small size for travelling*, relatively cool running HW*, light-weight-OS* and relatively cheap price*. Such characteristics are suited for the next generation of kids as the Amiga500 was suited for my needs/wants when I was younger.  I least my parents doesn’t have to worry about 'blowing up' the PC. (PS My parents has an IBM PS/2 back that time (i.e. 1989)).

Personally, I have several unused 256MB 133Mhz SDRAM sticks for the A1.

Quote
Then pee on the XBOX

My use of “X-BOX” is just to illustrate a level of  system requirements.

Quote

I know, but other considerations have to be taken into an account.

Whatever happened to explorer 2260?

That was a elite style game, It was looking really cool.  The devs The World Foundry vanished and last I heard the game`s dev team went independent to finish it.

The game`s sister title Maim and Mangle, an RTS, was back in development recently, I recall.  It was developed by the same guys, I forget the site`s url though.

Actually, talkin of Freelancer type games. I would really love to see First Encounters redone for A1 (FE was released in 95/96 on PC as a sequel to Elite) This would kick ass if it were remastered for the A1. With proper h/w acceleration and fixed bugs, proper joystick control too. And maybe some better sound fx, the ones in the original PeeCee release were atrocious. It could really take off.

Anyway... we really need an elite clone for A1. One with the gfx and scope to match. Maybe it can be turned into a free persistently MMORPG, there are so many on PC, but they all cost money. A free A1 only version would certainly get the numbers growing! Maybe it can ship with OS4 or something as a promotion to the new OS release.

here's my 2 cents

While even 64MB SDRAM + 64MB GFX card DDR RAM is "lightyear" ahead of XBOX memory capacity...

256MB SDRAM should remove the need of the swap memory & HDD.

HDD could be added when/if needed. (it should exist in A1200 kind of machine, not in CD32/gameconsole)

He's still right, though. An AmigaOne doesn't need biggest and best to match xbox performance. It's just one of those situations where a hypotethical comparisons call for low specs :-)

The interesting point is that 99% of the time high-end systems are touted as "what you need to run the latest games", but what does that make the xbox? And what does that mean in regards to the AmigaOne? Yes, I know the AmigaOne is more expensive than an xbox, but I think it's also both more user friendly and has more potential. It's also faster. Especially if you go for the G4 and get some good vectorized programming ;-)

Hidden & Dangerous is one of my favourtie games for the PC, so I'd second that recommendation!  I've not found it that buggy tho - except team member's occasional suicidal tendancies.

It is very atmospheric, i hope we see it, or something similar for OS4+.

The Playstation 2 has a vast amount of games and it seems Sony has provided the Linux community with utilities for converting things. If you can convert things for PS 2 from Linux, what's to stop people reverse engininering and releasing similar games onto the AmigaONE?

After all Connetix produced a PSX Emulator on Mac and beat Sonys law suit.

...First Encounters redone for A1...

Just don't know what to say on that. I love Elite series, over ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 to Amiga, I probably have wasted a lot of hours playing it. But when I saw FFE, I was little disappointed. GFX is ugly (even for that time) and game is full of bugs, almost not playable. So, if you want Frontier First Encounters just to be ported on Amiga, that is fine, but to see a remake of it, I don't think so :((( Don't get me wrong, that is something I really like to see on Aone, but probably nobody wants to start doing FFE from scratch all w/hardware acceleration and cool sound fx/music and not to be sure how much $$$ is going to earn from the project. I'm watching all the time Elite4 site, and David Braben and Co. did put Elite4 on hold right now. That's a shame... :((( There is lot of people out there who are having projects similar like Elite (space simulations), but progress is slow or abandoned.

Careful with that statement... Sony’s interest in Linux is for the support it’s own brand of non-negotiable closed hardware platform.

One doesn't need Sony's initiative, IF the source code is already available for download (and open for negotiation in regards to licensing deals).

Quote

What do 'you' mean by "reverse engininering"?
One doesn’t need reverse engineering if the source code is available to begin with.

Quote

After all Connetix produced a PSX Emulator on Mac and beat Sonys law suit.

Such emulators could negate the need for native AmigaOS titles and could damage the AmigaOS platform in the long run. It only benefits Sony in terms of titles sales and market share (i.e. aids Sony’s market software sales not AmigaOS related titles).

You might want to check out this link: Advanced Strategic Command (http://www.asc-hq.org/)
It's a customizable strategy game, and includes support for some of the old Battle Isle maps (you can download them on their site).

It's a Linux game (I'm sure Kronos will love the irony behind this ;-)), open source, and might be a good candidate for people wanting to port something (Hint, hint  :-D )

If it runs Empire perfectly, then I'll be happy for the rest of the A1's life.  If I want current games, I'll buy them for my PS2 and GameCube.

Well, there is one recent game that I'd like to see on the Amiga, and that's Neverwinter Nights.  But under one condition: I want the toolkit.  Not like the Mac version where the toolkit has been cancelled.

I want "Planet Side"  it's INSANE!! .. http://planetside.station.sony.com/

Actually, the Planetside I had in mind was of Psygnosis! After 12 years I feel we deserve the ORIGINAL... CDTV Retrospective (http://www.ifrance.com/ninjaw/cd32/_Docs/CDTV%20Retrospective%20II.htm)

This is the game that should have sold the machine that came from the house that Jack built.

Planetside has its roots back in the days when Psygnosis was one of "The Great Amiga Publishers." Demoed on the Lemmings CDTV disk, this shoot-em-up had you racing over a fractal landscape in pursuit of a raging missile.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea .. Sachs produced the original artwork, but the game never eventuated.

Ultimate TETRIS .. (We don't have to be entirely serious, do we?)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The A1 just could[/b] be the machine for a NEW "more than just a game" to debut on.
WHAT I have in mind is a CD or DVD with multiple entry points; like Flight Sims where you can fly TRAINING or MISSIONS, but much more than that.

As an example: "The LENSMAN Universe". . . .
Based on the series by E.E (Doc) Smith, the player would be able to play as one of many characters ... from- Spy missions in Ancient Atlantis, Fighting as a Gladiator in Imperial Rome, Conway Costigan of Triplanetary against Grey Roger, the GREY LENSMAN from later books, the RED LENSMAN (a woman), any ot the CHILDREN OF THE LENS, or even WORSEL (a dragon).

° Then there would be Spaceship Simm options from Flitter to Dreadnaught, and even Battles in command of Grand Fleet! Null Inertia anyone?

° Weapons firing; from Hand Blaster to Battlewagon weapons such as the awesome Q-Gun right on up to the system-ranging Sun-beam!

° Being in command of Grand Base, and fighting off an attacking enemy fleet.

Big features would be seeing the FALSE enviroment fade away as the Mental Compulsion of your enemy is overcome..... taking over the mind of an enemy guard, 2-I-C, etc to fight from within an enemy stronghold.

( Other titles: "The Jules VERNE Universe", "The RINGWORLD Universe", "BARSOOM: savage world", "The Inner World of PELUSADAR".......)
