Title: Installing OS 3.9 on WinUAE
Post by: Roman78 on December 19, 2005, 11:19:39 AM
Finally i've got my OS 3.9 CD, now i want to install it on Amiga Forever. I can install it but when it's reboot i get some error's.

Like he can't find my CD and the resolution and colors are bad. Like tv resolution and 16 colors in stead of 1280x1024 32bit.

3.1 (or whatever is delivered whit Amiga Forever) runs fine at 1280x1024.

What can i do??

Gr Roman.

When you installed OS3.9, did it ask you to install your CD drivers? Did you say yes?

You have to install Picasso96 from the OS3.9 CD to get high resolution and more colours on screen.

Download picasso96 from their website http://picasso96.home.pages.de/ and install that with the uaegfx driver.

Okee colours works. At least on this machine. But when i restart the settings are gone.

And why can't i quit the Workbench, it sais there a 8 Programs running.

He still ask for the CD-Rom. I din't selected that he use CD-Rom.

I take it you installed P96 to get your desired colour depth?

You can't quit Workbench because you have launched some programmes which need to be quit first. Why do you need to quit Workbench anyway?

Check in SYS:Devs/Dosdrivers for a CD mountlist. Chances are the OS3.9 installer put it there but the device it's trying to use doesn't work with UAE.

It's look like it's read only. What ever i change than reboot it's gone.

I did see any programs. But how do i shut it down??

Whit the cd-rom the same. I see that CD0 and remove it. After restart it's back there.

What's wrong??

/Edit: It sais: Intutiun i attemt to reset the workbench screen. please cloase all windows except drawers.

What's this??

You don't need to shut it down. Just close UAE when you have finished using it.

The CD0 icon in DEVS:Dosdrivers is probably why you're getting an error on boot. When you delete it, does it actually disappear?

Okee it's work. Picasso and CD-Rom solved.

But he stil don't save the location of my icons. When i'm moveing an icon, than after reboot they are back at the old place. And is there somthing like auto arrange??

A window has opened before the Workbench screen has opened. Probably the CD0 error message.

How did you solve the read only problem?

There is no auto arrange. The quickest way to do a clean up is to hold the Right Amiga key and press the full stop key. You need to do a snapshot to make the icons stay where you put them after a reboot.

My two cents. If you have the space, Get AmiKit - you need the 3.9 CD to complete it's install as it is a 3.9 based distribution.

It uses DOpus as the WB replacement, but you can edit startup-sequence to use LoadWB instead (it's in there, just commented out - I had to save the editied s-s to another name then copy it over via cli - DOpus protects that file when trying to write it ???). You need to register DOpus or you get a requester when the thing fires up. I'm still out on if I like DOpus or not (beeen a long time DiskMaster user) but AmiKit's a slick setup.

If there are files from your original install of Amiga Forever, modify the AmiKit .UAE file to include those directories, HDFs, etc. You can then copy over what you want.

Nah, half the fun of AmigaOS is configuring it just the way you want it. Where's the fun of downloading a preconfigured UAE configuration that looks just like Windows?

That snapshot works.

Bu he won't boot right. Sometimes it's good. But the most of the time i didn't see my background an the AmiDock is not loaded.

I'll also try that AmiKit.

/edit: now i have the problem that i can't open any non amiga harddisk.

@motorollin Yes, that's true, but this does give you a 3.9 based install rather quickly - you can then hack away at your heart's content to make it your baby, not his. This way takes away some of the pain others experience when trying out this thing called Amiga.

No no, nothing is protected. A message "cannot delete file" when saving startup-sequence by microglded is probably caused by WinUAE filesystem incompatibility. However, edited file is saved anyway!
