Title: Amiga on internet
Post by: Norway on December 15, 2005, 10:02:26 PM
Hi! Im going to connect my a1200 to the internet for the first time, so i have some questions before i buy more
hardware.

1: Are people wiewing amiga.org on amigas generally?
2: i have a desktop a1200hd os3,5, do i need more than a blizzard 1230/50 32mbram and a wierless broadbandcard.(speed)
3: Do a blizzard 1260/50 128mb ram , fit in a desktop without any heatingproblems?

As you probable see, im quite new with amigas. I am doing this because i want to back down the usage of my MS machine.

Thanks Erik :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)

1. Yes. I visit Amiga.org with my A1240PPC and AWeb 3.5 beta and everything is cool and reasonably fast, thanks to PPC datatypes. I often check it too with my A630 and mere ECS on my A1085 640*256 screen with AWeb 3.4, and it is still readable though heavy scrolling is required. Currently though, i am browsing on my PC laptop which i have to admit is far superior to any of my amigas.

2. 68030 is ok with some good datatypes and a good browser. Maybe, IBrowse would be the faster choice for you rather than AWeb. Try them both. WiFi runs brilliantly on A600/A1200 PCMCIA.

3. Yes, it is way cooler than a 1240.

Yeah i use my amiga with a blizzard 1260 and ethernet cable from my pc and the net is pretty fast on it.Well as far as i know you can use a 1260 in a desktop case if you want but of course the more the space the better but yeah it should be ok..

Thankyou for the replies. Maby the wisest thing would be to wait for an amiga one. and just fiddle around with my existing hardware.  :-)  :-)

@Norway

Good choice, but the only thing you need is an ethernet card. Browsing the net with AGA and 030 is slow, but most certainly possible. Email and IRC is just as fast as it will be on PC.

My suggestion is to get the wireless ethernet card (look for a Netgear MA401 card), get it connected, and brag about your computer from 1992 that can actually browse the net at a more or less acceptable speed. Show your friends all the cool old games you have, and just enjoy it as it is.

When it comes to serious internet browsing, use your PC, since many not Amiga related sites can't be viewed correctly in an Amiga browser.

I know some people will disagree with me on this one, but I would NOT recommend having a Blizzard 1260 fitted in a desktop without keeping the lid open. Yes, the 060 is cooler than the 040, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't running rather hot. I would not want to push my thumb against the processor after having used it for some hours. Actually, the entire A1200 original casing started to feel noticably warmer when I had the lid closed, especially the lid in itself, and that can't be a good sign.

I kept the lid open (when I had my A1200 in its original desktop casing) just to prevent cutting down on the lifespan of the card and the computer. I have not had any problems whatsoever with either one... and the A1200 mobo is going on its 10th year now, stable as ever...

But, like I said, some will probably disagree with me... but I prefer to play it safe...

There are even some of us out there who view amiga.org using an old 1MB chipram A500 (though with some modifications).  I generally turn images and javascript off in Ibrowse and avoid sites that use a lot of such.  No images needed for email, irc, etc.

In regards to Amiga.org on amiga, (using uae)
I was surprised by how well aweb displayed the site!

Especially after seeing my own site a bit muffed up!

Never been on the net using an amiga (software at least)
and was very impressed!

Aweb 3.5!!!

Amiga very cool on the Internet!!
