I just won this hard drive on ebay for £1.70 with the intention of putting it in my amiga once my 2.5" cable arrives.
Its a 2.5" 2.1gb IBM travlestar.
However looking at the pins on it, it seems 4 of the pins (on the left in that pic) are set to the side a little, but when i looked at the picture of a 2.5" hard disk cable there is not gap on the plug it seems.
Have i baught a unusable drive? Just wondering.

btw, this is the first 2.5" laptop drive i have ever seen so forgive if this is a `noob` question!

The cluster of 4 pins are the jumper pins for setting master/slave/cable select. Usually on the Amiga, these are not needed. Make sure you don't plug the 44-way IDE cable (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=2.5) over the cluster, and ensure it is the right orientation when plugged over the 44-pins.

So thats ok then! Thanks, my mind can rest! :-)

No problem.
-
Just make sure that your boot partition is not bigger than 2 Gb !! It must be smaller, 1,9 will do !!

I thought that 2,5 drives fit perfectly on the internal port of a 1200. Were the 3,5 ones that needed and adaptor or such?
So a laptop 2,5 drive should fit in directly withouth problem.
-
The difference between a laptop and an A1200 is that in a laptop you usually use a cradle where the 2,5" sits whereas in an A1200 you need a 2,5"-to-2,5" cable ...

You must plug the cable so that Pin 1 on the motherboard goes to Pin 1 on the hard disk! Otherwise the +5v will go to the wrong place and may result in smoke.
-
there are no pin numbers on the back of the hard drive but am i right to assume that the cable will line up using the notch in the middle of the plug like on a 3.5" drive?
-
Could anyone clarify which would be pin1 on the back of the hard drive? I dont want to plug it in till im sure!

may result in smoke.? How 'bout sure thing - it will burn up that cable in a heartbeat (at the very least).
Don't mean to scare anyone, but if you've been there, you know what I mean.
