Title: Workbench hdd problem
Post by: scorpion on December 11, 2005, 01:33:54 PM
Hi there,

i hope someone could help me out here..
i got an A500 w. kickstart 1.3 2 weeks ago an buyed an scsi hdd for it from ebay...
my problem is that i have absolutely no floppy disks for anything..
so i connected the hdd controller (GVP A500 HD8 Series II rev6) powered up the system and i got an error :(
on the drive was workbench 2 installed and there amiga dos says that it can't boot because of "patch couldn't be installed"
now i have some questions:

can i fix the problem on my pc with winuae? (it reads the disk ) - if yes how schould i do this?
i have tried to setup aother scsi hdd with wiuae to use it in my real amiga - doesn't worked - anyone an idea how to preepare and or format/setup an scsi disk on pc for the A500 ?
and my last question how can i make a working backup of the original hdd?

thx :)

maybe i should say that the suggested new drive is a 2gb quantum.. and in my pc is runing an Adaptec aha 2940-u/w scsi controller..

A kickstart 1.3 a500 cannot boot a wb 2.0 directly unless you do some form of softkicking or have a phisically kickstart switcher for changing roms on the fly.
Maybe the patch that you are referring is that the system try to softkick, but it can't maybe because it didn't find the adequate rom.
On the other side, winuae will read the disk only if you have a scsi controller on your pc, that can be use to connect your scsi drive to it. I see no problems on it.
Hope i have helped, if you have more questions, feel free to ask.

first thx for your answer..

as you can see i have a scsi controller in my pc and winuae can read the disk..

for softkicking where i have to place the rom image on the working hdd?

You can put the file anywhere I think, as long as you point the softkick programme to the correct file.

Alternatively, since you can see your Amiga's hard drive in UAE, just install Workbench 1.3 on to it, then put it back in your Amiga and then you will be able to boot without softkicking.

The other solution would be to install a 2.0 kickstart chip.

ok got it...

i softkicked the machine to ks2.04 with mkick and it boots
now without any problems... after several useless tries with other softkickers..

:D

Cool  :-)

Now you have your machine booting, you need to either buy a Kickstart 2 chip, or Amiga Forever which contains a legal ROM image. Softkicking without one of these isn't allowed. The ROM chip would be the better option as it would remove the need to softkick altogether.

Alternatively, now you can boot, you could make some Workbench 1.3 disks and install 1.3 to the hard disk instead of 2.05, then it will boot 1.3 without needing to softkick.

yeah i will get a ks2 from a friend next month, he found some oringinal workbench disks too..  :)

ich think will build a ks switcher seems to be better for working and gaming maybe i find some old sims for the gvp scsi controller to get the mb ram full.. then softkicking doesnt hurt meanwhile..

I dunno, I heard that every time you softkick God kills a kitten.

Oh wait, that was something else.
