I was sitting here wondering why people use there amiga's, I dont mean in the sence of "Cause I like it" but what do you use it for? playing games! applications etc etc
-
Stress relief and hobby C programming. :-D
-
Authoring and maintaining a website/online shop.
Writing letters, spreadsheet reports, printing labels and invoices, email, web browsing
Pagestream 4 for creating adverts / brochures
Burning CDs, product testing on 2x Amigas + AmigaOne + Pegasos II.
MP3s with AmigaAmp
-
Web, email, word processing, occasional image processing, games, MP3 jukebox. It's my primary machine.
Long periods of time pass between PC bootups :-)
-
1- C programming
2- Ocasinally Gfx (just drawn very basic sketch for a greenhouse yesterday with DPaintAGA). ImageFX has also been usefull to me couple of times too (finally installed it and converted a lot a IFFs to PNG). I've also got a bit into 3D Imagine (finally) and I liked it.
3- Mess with it! I just like AmigaOS and Classic Amiga hardware.
4- See AGA demos
5- Play old games
6- When I get a Networkcard it will also be ocasional webrowsing, now I mostly use a Win2K box with Firefox for that.
-
"..maintaining a website/online shop."
Wich Amiga model do you use for that ? Whith what software ?
-
Editpad and the excellent FTP client, AmiTradeCenter, oh and TVPaint for the website graphics
-
My main amiga is rarely on for more than 5 minutes without either a C/C++ project going or octamed. My second 1200D is usually used for testing, retrogaming and also for running a midi translator tool I wrote (uses a file to remap midi program numbers, channels, drum note assignments, velocity curves etc in realtime).
The other 1200T (not actually mine, belongs to a friend) is mostly used for testing and the odd bit of coding.
Then there's UAE which is used for testing, large project compiling (a lot faster than doing it on a real 680x0 amiga) and the odd bit of retrogaming.
-
A few of the things I use my A1200T for
Coding strategy games
Mods with Octamed Sound Studio Professional
HippoPlayer
Programming utils
CED
Writing software
IRC
Designing AI Algorithms
FTP
Optimizing slow C code with Fast Asm
HTML
Gfx with Dpaint & PPaint
TCP/IP Networking
Database work
Postscript
Sound sample editing
Seducing H0t Chicks
Playing Total Chaos
Making other Amiga owners happy
-
games, mp3's and for the simple joy of learning things, modding cases to fit busboards, brag at ppl that have no idea what they are looking at... it's a kind of a hobby to me
-
First reason why/for what i use amiga is also to relax, nostalgy and just listen its floppy drive ticking
Second is I love to do DeluxePaint3 low-res images.
-
I use WinUAE to make pixel graphics.
-
Ami uses:
playing my classical music CDs, (boom box is dead)
writting letters
drawing 2D/3D pictures
scanning my drawings
and once in a blue moon, a game.
-
Mine are sitting in boxes :-(.
-
Play illegally downloaded ADFs and WHDLoad games! ;)
-
My Amiga 500 is the only computer I use at home. I use it mainly for internet, email, games, music (mods & mp3), converting images, Mac/Atari emulation and text documents. I have used it occasionally for sending/receiving faxes, creating PDFs, 3D rendering and messaging.
I used to use it for printing documents and images, but I got sick of waiting for half an hour per page (damn Turboprint!) and stupid faulty ink cartridges.
Ami uses:
playing my classical music CDs
Hey, another Amiga user that likes classical music? I've got about 1Gb of converted (from my CDs) Bach, Vivaldi and Handel music on my Amiga.
-
I work at the Toronto international airport control tower and we use Amigas basically for everything that involves getting the planes safely up or down. Frankly speaking, I don't think that PCs would ever be up for such a responsible and demanding job. They have been running reliably for the past 20 years since we originally implemented the "Amiga in the workplace" solution.
We are still using mostly Amiga 2000 units with 2.0 roms and are hoping to upgrade to 3.1 roms/OS3.9 some day, however our development department is still reluctant to recommend and push a safe migration, as software compatibility might pose a problem. After all, it is an airport and all systems must be 100% funtional, all the time.
We are constantly upgrading the workplace with new units, and for parts and systems we mostly go to eBay.
It's a wonderful place to work at! I wouldn't trade my job for anything in the world.
-

You've got to be joking. Amiga 2000s with 2.0 in the Toronto international control tower??
If you're not joking, all I can say is "Holy {bleep}!".
-
@Amigakit
Burning CDs, product testing on 2x Amigas + AmigaOne + Pegasos II.
MP3s with AmigaAmp
Right on brutha! :-)
-
@mr_a500
Do bears go in the woods and isn't it great that stuff doesn't stick to rabbit fur?
-
Hello All,
I use my Amiga 4000T Cyberstorm 060 PPC for Video Editing with VLab Motion Digitizer & Toccata sound card
(sadly they never made Video Toaster in PAL) what else can I think off? Surfing the net on brodband nice
and fast.Play Mp3,Burn CD's,Play Mods and once in while I might play game.
Who said the Amiga was games machine?

Hey, if the planes land and take off safely, good for Amiga. Dave Hayne would be proud. Is there an article about that? If not, someone should write one!!! Send in some pictures!
play classical music
That much! That wouldn't be too bad to have on my HD. :-) What format do you play them in? I have one Bach song that I transcribed on Deluxe Music Construction Set.
-
I use my A1200 for WHDLoad games mostly. I also use YAM to send the odd mail if I'm already on my Amiga when I need to send one (normally I would use my iBook). Unfortunately I find surfing quite painful on my 040/33. Hopefully I will be able to upgrade to something faster at a later date.

:-o i am sorry to say this, and maybe it will upset some amigians, but: oh my god! i won't ever fly to toronto
amiga is a cool computer, i use it for playing games, browsing the internet (sometimes) and working from home via ssh.... but.... it crashes about every hour :( i would never trust it to do some REALLY important tasks.
i like the amiga and i am working towards my own nirvana - which is throwing away my pc and making the amiga my only computer (besides the c64), but amiga is f***ing unstable... this is a fact that remains and should prevent everyone from using amigas in critical environments... maybe a2000 with 2.x roms are better, but my os3.9 box crashes a lot of times every day
-
amiga is f***ing unstable
Mine isn't. Why don't you look at solving the problem before blaming the Amiga?

my amiga also does not crash, as long as i just do things that i know won't crash it, like playing games through whdload (like you told) or so.
it depends on the programs you are using. if the program does something wrong, it crashes the whole computer, no good base for running a computer in critical environment.

You're telling me that your Amiga is stable as long as you don't run software that is unstable and crashes it, right? So it's the software, not the Amiga, that is unstable. I'm sure that Toronto airport have thoroughly tested their Amigas and the software they use if they are being used for air traffic control. The fact that they have been running for 20 years speaks volumes for the stability of both the software they are using and the Amigas themselves.

Oh that was just me talking out of my arse. :-)
I was being sarcastic at all the folks out there that go around and show and tell about how Amiga still makes a difference nowadays by being professionally used over other more modern and readily available solutions. It was pure b*llsh*t and nothing more. :-D
-
You're cruel, cruel I tells ya :ak47:
Still, I stick by my argument that AmigaOS is *not* unstable. There is just a lot of crappy software written for it that causes it to become unstable (as there is on every other OS on the planet). There is also a lot of very high quality software that will run with no problems.

Why did you start talking out of your arse anyway? Nobody in this thread was being a freak and doing moronic bragging - we were just answering the original poster's question. Next time your arse decides to talk, don't let it near the keyboard. (.. I assume your arse was doing the typing too ;-) )
-
I use my A1200T to plan my takeover....of the world.
FWA HA HA :destroy:
..and all the general crap I don't "have" to use a PC for.
-
@x56h34
"Oh that was just me talking out of my arse"
have you given it at least a mint before? ;-)
-
if his arse was doing the typing dont even think of buying his keyboard off him.
i use my amiga for games and deluxepaint stuff and umm super computer science stuff .... ok mostly games :-D
-
I use my Amigas mostly for gaming, but also tinkering with them adding expansions, tricks, coding(c/c++), etc... Also some bit of irc and web browsing(on the 1200), but hope to do it on the 500 soon, just have to find an good accelerator, an in general try to use it while enjoying the stay.
-
I use two A1200's with Blizzard 1230 IV for presentations in a theater. Software is Scala Infochannel. One of the A1200's runs 24x7. The only problem I have here is to swap faulty HD's regularly.
-
@god64
If it was good to launch spacecrafts at Nasa I suppose it'd be more than enouph to manage a bunch of insignificant plains ;-)
-
well, look as it this way: if that spacecraft would have went down due to an system failure... well... some astronauts would have died, they knew what they were doing... but if a plane crashes into the toronto tower, it could be /me :-D
@Technoid
if you argue like this, you should mention, that windows also is a pretty stable system, as long as you leave it alone, disconnected from net and all media removed ;-)

Sorry Amiduffer, I missed your question (.. got caught up in the "arse talking"). I recorded them in DSS in 8bit IFF, but they sound pretty good (..unlike Windows 8bit) and they take up about 1/6 the space of 16bit (which can't be played on an A500 anyway).
But I just bought an iPod Nano, so I use that instead 8-). There's still one advantage of the Amiga recordings though - my recordings from cassette tape. I tried recording from tape on Windows and it sounds like total crap compared to the Amiga recordings.

Gaming and Protracker Modules only..

It is generally considered to be the job of a modern operating system to keep poorly written programs from bringing down the whole system. Amiga OS fails miserably at that. Sure if you load up an XP system with tons of viruses, spyware or shoddy drivers you can make an unstable mess out of it, but if Amigas were as popular as Windows PCs it would have the same problems (worse if things were as it currently stands since Amiga OS isn't particularly secure).
-
I use mine for a bit of everything really.
I write a lot, so NotePad and TuiTED get a lot of exercise as well as TVPaint, ArtEffect 3 and Photogenics (for a bit of image manipulation for articles). I'm currently working on a dissertation and I'm using AmiPDF a lot for that as well as AWeb for browsing for information.
Besides that I'm listening to radio streams using Tunenet, listening to sids using Sid4Amiga, playing various albums using Amplifier and using UADE for mods (using deficons for that).
I'm using SimpleMail for all my email needs. DvPlayer or Mplayer for watching fansubs. AmIRC and Wookiechat for IRCing and instant messaging through Bitlbee (all the time really :-)). I have Dopus4 set up for various tasks but mostly use the Workbench for various tasks. ATC gets a lot of usage as well - both for maintaining my homepage and shuffling files around locally (when I'm not using samba between my various machines).
Once I get more time on my hands I intend to use Goattracker quite a bit for making some sids (already did one). Once I get hold of a midi sound interface I plan to play around with HD-Rec and Horny, but that's some time into the future yet.
I used to use Newscoaster quite a bit, but don't have time to keep up with usenet anyway these days. TurboCalc gets fired up when I need to do the odd calculation. I use FryingPan to do backups now and then (cd or dvd).
TView is used to keep track of what I won't be watching on the telly anyway - it's good to be on top of things ;)
Since I'm a bit of an emulation buff I enjoy messing around with various emulators - my favourites are VICE and FPSE. At the moment I don't use VICE much though, since it's so easy to just move the files to an SD card and put them in the C64 itself.
I also play the various games when time permits. There are lots of great SDL ports and a huuuge amount that I haven't even tried yet (Beats of Rage rocks!). Since I'm a huge LucasArts fan ScummVM gets a fair bit of exercise as well.
I guess I use my Amiga for pretty much everything. I just don't have a supported printer, so when I've finished parts of my dissertation I move the files across to my Powerbook, fix typography there and print from that. I'd like to be able to print from my Amiga some day in the future though.
I <3 my µA1-C :-D
-
I mostly use my A500+ for games. I sometimes use it for drawings on DPaintIII.
I hope to make a switch to amiga one day. Windows get too annoying.
-
@Trezzer
Thanks to your post, I just discovered a whole host of Apllications I never knew about or wanted!!! Thanks:
These are them:
1. TuiTED
2. UADE
3. Sid4Amiga
4. HD-Rec
5. Horny
6. NewsCoaster
7. BitlBee (This sounds like a cool thing)
8. TView
9. BeatsOfRage
already downloaded a few :-)
By the way..can someone do a Precise Tutorial on how exactly to get SCUMMVM running on an AMiga 68030? In English?

Mac/Atari emulation
Are you using Medusa or Chameleon for the Atari emulation?
Or probably AmTari or ST4Amiga?
-
I use my Amiga4000T-060 mainly for writing my science-fiction novel (with FinalWriter 97). However, I usually have "Radio Rivendale" or "Streaming Soundtracks" or my MP3 collection of every Loreena McKennitt song playing in the background with AmiNetRadio. Similarly I use my Amiga for most things related to my book and as it's a sci-fi, that includes:
* drawing up tech schematics in PPaint
* playing with ship and station designs in Imagine or LightWave
* doing complex calculations in TurboCalc or MapleV (or both via ARexx)
* Maintaining a database of my characters in SuperBase4 Pro
* generating planetary maps with "Planet"
* generating solar systems with "StarGen"
* and doing research on the Internet with IBrowse
For some reason, I find myself to be more inspired when I'm working on the Amiga. Don't know why. I'm sure it's purely psychological but it works so I'm not going to change it. I've written 125,000 words in this book so far and only have a chapter and a half left (mind you, it's a trilogy so I still have a ways to go). If it ever gets published I'll be sure to let everyone here know.
I must confess, though, I do use a PC for some things pertaining to my book. Every time I finish a chapter, I email it to my work in RTF so that I can do quick edits in Word during my coffee and lunch breaks. I also use Celestia on my PC at home to simulate my universe in full 3D... nice... but I wish someone could port it to the Amiga so I could use it there. ;-)
-

No, I'm not emulating ST - I'm talking about Atari 800 emulation with ACE (for Montezuma's Revenge, Robotron, Defender, etc.).
I tried Chameleon once, but couldn't find any disk images and quickly gave up. I never actually saw an Atari ST (not big in Canada), so it has no "nostalgia factor" for me anyway.

Someone is still using ACE for Atari 400/800 emulation?? Holy Cow! :-o
I'll have to update that one of these days. :-) There are quite a few changes I could make now that would make it much better.
-
Is that you Joe? Holy {bleep}! You're my hero! (not being sarcastic here :-D )
I tried for years to get a good working Atari 800 emulator on my Amiga and your awesome ACE was the only way to do it. I was obsessed with Montezuma's Revenge (Monty 16K) since 1984 and it runs beautifully on ACE.
I wish you would update it!!! I'd love to see Blue Max and Rescue on Fractalus working! (no Amiga versions of these games)
I'd be thrilled with even a minor fix like the palette (background should be 1,4,8 foreground 7,10,13).
Thanks for ACE!!! 8-)
-
Not using it right now until I can get it working for the internet. Does not seem to want to work. I have an X-SurfII and running Genisis but it will not connect going through a router.
But I show it off alot at friends that say what the heck is this and I tell them "This was YOUR future and they screwed it up big time"
-
You know, I just made a rather strange observation... I really don't use my Amigas for much at all. I tinker with the innards now and then, try to upgrade them a little... But I don't actually use them for anything. Hell the only reason I own them at all is because I liked using them back in the 90's when I worked at a public access TV station... And I don't even own a toaster card.
All I can say is I love em, and I want to see more and more hardware for them. Maybe I'm just nuts!

No, it's not. Read the whole thread.
His arse somehow learned to type and presumably when he turned his back to have tea and crumpets or something, his arse quickly typed in this load of bollocks.
-
@Dr_Righteous
Looks like i've joined your club :-) But once I get my amiga running fine I'll start to learn as much as I can about what this machine can fully do (well try to learn)
-
i have a commodore amiga 500, and use it only for the games! i realy like those old games!!
-
I use my AmigaOne for:
chatting on IRC (WookieChat),
MSN (Jabberwocky),
email (SimpleMail),
browsing the web (IBrowse/AWeb),
viewing certain video clips (MPlayer/DVPlayer),
scaling digital camera pictures (fxpaint),
maintaining my crap website (CubicIDE),
working out budgets (Turbocalc),
playing emulated games (arcade and c64 mostly),
a bit of programming (CubicIDE again)
listening to music all day (SimplePlay),
burning cd's and dvd's (Frying Pan),
encoding music cd's, (LAME + TheMPegEncGUI),
and I'm starting to get into making music (HD-REC and RockBEAT)..
other utilies worth a mention.. Thumb + Picshow for picture viewing, Twin + TwinGUI for VNC, ftpd for transferring files over the local network, SMBFS for file sharing, SGrab for screenshots, etc. (I've probably missed a few)
I'm waiting for my new sound card to arrive so I can record my guitar better.
-
For now I'm using it only for nostalgia :) I just got a scandoubler last week so I want to delve into all my old music/photos/text and especially games!!! The sad sad thing is that I've kept hundreds of my old amiga floppies in an UN-temperature controlled storage for years. All that hot/cold/hot/cold must have killed those poor disks, I fear they are lost forever :( RIP you guys
-
What system do you advise me to buy ...to make music?
-
Hey nisios, maybe you could try using UAE (do you know about this Amiga emulator?). I haven't actually tried it for music before, but I believe it's been done. One thing you should understand about Amiga, is that it's a bit of a cult following. Decent Amiga hardware is pretty expensive and hard to find (depending to some extent on where you are, exactly). If possible, I would suggest having a try on someone else's amiga first, or on UAE if you can get a ROM. What system do you use now? I don't mean to be too discoraging, it's just that these days Amiga may not give you the best value for money, and you may be used to features and support of your existing system which is not present on miggys.
-
:-D my 1200 is used just for playing wings ,
and my cd32 for speedball 2 ,

This situation is more prevalent within the community than anyone wants to admit.
