Title: Gayle getting fried or what's wrong?
Post by: Munchkin on November 28, 2005, 10:40:56 PM
Seems my first try got lost somehow.

Ok, this is the deal.

A few days ago the CDRW in my A4kD stopped working, or rather the computer can't find it anymore.

I tried cleaning it up, jerking the cable, changing powercables with the harddrive, change the cable completely and so on. Still doesn't work. The harddrive works just fine.

Tried with linux and netbsd and those can't find it either so I tried the CDRW in both pc's, it works just fine in those.

Anyone got an idea what's happened and what I can do to fix this? Or is the only solution to get a new controller?

Hi,
Are the drives jumpered as Master and Slave accordingly or are either set to Cable Select?  This might sound odd, but if you have an extra 40 pin IDE cable, try slicing the pin one (usually the red wire) between the motherboard connector and the first drive connector.  This helps the Amiga see some drives - I have had to do this on some A1200s and A4000s depending on which model of HDD was installed.  Try the jumpers in different settings CS vs MS.  If you have an extra IDE cable around it might just be worth a try.

Good luck!

It's set correctly.. it's been working for years...

And I did write that I've tried the drive in my both pc's...

It just stopped recognising it one day.. it can't find the drive without me doing any change.

Ok, you've tested the drive in another machine and it works, so it's not the drive. You've also changed the cable, so it can't be that. The only other thing it can be in that case is the IDE interface. So why not try a different drive (one you know works) in the same position on the IDE interface and see if that is detected?

I'll have to dig and see if I have a drive to try with... I'll get back about it..

Suddenly it works again as it always have.

Connected an old 1 GB drive, after the computer had been off for two weeks, and it found it. So, I connected the cdrw again and what do you know, it found it at once.

This spooks me a bit, the problem will probably come back again since I didn't do anything to solve it.

Sounds like a bad contact on the ide header.

I know, but I jerked the contacts around before and it didn't help.. might be a problem on the mobo, i have to take it apart and have a look. Could be I need to clean it a bit..
