Title: Who still supports Amiga?
Post by: nasty on November 27, 2005, 12:12:48 PM
Hi guy's

I've had an Amiga for many years but have really only used it for games and certain apps (ppaint,soundtracker etc). so my program knowledge is non existence but over the years, I've seen Amiga shops and people with private projects come and go mostly go! So I thought that we could have an updated list of people/shops/web sites who are still involved in the support of the classic Amiga e.g Amigakit, apex designs and people behind frogger,mui etc etc,  cause where would we be without these people who love the classic amiga?  maybe its time we gave something back to these people/companys who have supported the classic amiga over the years and are still supporting it by giving them some kind of award from the amiga community(dont know what tho)to thank them for there support over the years and future! so what you guys think and dont forget to post your links of sites and comapnays that continue to support the amiga

I still support Amiga!
Amiga Rules Forever!!!

Some BGCPC users are mad at me for not porting my Original Amiga game down to run on their BGCPC computers so they hurl insults at me like "You will die with an Amiga in your hand!"
That's supposed to be an insult!?!?  WAHAHAHAHA!!!

@ChaosLord

Dude!  I just realised...........Your in Texas!!! so your an American?

Why on earth thn did you make Total Chaos in PAL instead of NTSC? (Please dont say its because PAL has higher resolution...it doesnt, just more lines without scrolling)

NTSC would have been faster and more Fun for us Americans.......as we would be able to play it on Large TV screens and show it off to Friends :-D

Can you somehow make this game run in NTSC?  all one has to do if you need more lines is make the screen scroll down to where you need to see.

I think I was able to load it once in NTSC by using the program NTSC4NTSC and typing: "NTSC4NTSC FORCENTSC"

I think I got it on Aminet.  the problem is.it wont let me scroll down to make any selection.

By the way....the game never worked for me..either in PAL or NTSC because I think it is missing some files that got lost or corrupt durring decompression.........I used DiskMaster2....maybe I should Try WizARC?

Diskmaster said something like:  Skipping extraneous data, and basically just didnt decompress that or threw it out..who knows.

Of course I am an American!  Viva Bush!  Long live the Repbulic!  E. Pluribus Unum!  Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!  Give me liberty or give me death!  :-)

Because PAL has higher resolution so the board can be bigger without scrolling.

OOPS too late! :lol:

If it has more lines then it has more resolution.

NTSC = 640x400
PAL  = 640x512

Therefore PAL is HIGHER Resolutiuon than NTSC.  I wrote all about this stuff in the Amiga WIKI because some people have real confusion on this issue.

Both PAL and NTSC pump out the same amount of data per second, perhaps that is what is confusing you.

The other reasons I wrote the game in PAL are:
1. ALL Amigas built since 1988 support PAL and NTSC without any modification.  The Enhanced Agnus is a very nice chip in this regard.

2. All Amigas built in 1988 and before all support PAL IF they have been upgraded with the new fat agnus.

3. Most of the best demos and games require PAL anyway.

4. My A3000 is permanently in PAL mode.  The A3000 has this really kewl jumper on the motherboard that is dead ez to install a switch on.  This lets you easily switch from PAL to NTSC.  I installed the switch, set it to PAL and then NEVER changed it back.  There was no reason to.

5. Most Amigas are in PAL countries anyway.

GOOD TVs support PAL and NTSC no prob.  Its just those dam ripoff japanese tvs e.g. Sony et. al. that don't support it. :madashell:

uhmmm... grumble brumble... hmmm...

Well uhmm.. I could add a secret option that does that just 4 u.... but the game would suck to hafta constantly scroll it around all the time. I know because I used to have a secret noninterlaced mode where the game ran in 640x256 and scrolled around at 50 fps.  I hated it.

Ok I guess I can make a secret -NTSC switch 4 u.
It will force NTSC mode and activate AUTOSCROLL.  That should be easy.

But don't you have a 1084S monitor?
They are 100% PAL/NTSC compatible.

There are a gazillion bugged out versions of LHA v2.x
So if you want to decompress a large archive with 50,000 files you need to use lha v1.x (Stefan Rules!)  Many people use v1.21 or so.

Put the archive on your HD (lets say u put it on WORK:) Goto shell and type:
cd WORK:
lha x TotalChaosAGA.lha

And it will work.  It works for hordes of other wizards.

When you get it working I would be very interested to learn what is the very first spell that a newb casts?  Thanx!

I use my old outdated worthless 68k AGA Amiga everyday for lots of different things.

It will probably die long after I have,
so I am planning to surf the net with it on my deathbed.

Did any of you notice they have the SharkPPC for sale in their accelerator list!!? Now I must admit I don't read the language. I doubt they really have them but it's interesting they list them with a price.

FYI

@ChaosLord

Wow!  Long answer :-)..thanks:

But I disagree on some points:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
f it has more lines then it has more resolution.

NTSC = 640x400
PAL = 640x512

Therefore PAL is HIGHER Resolutiuon than NTSC. I wrote all about this stuff in the Amiga WIKI because some people have real confusion on this issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nope!  PAL is not even one pixel higher in resolution......even if it was Fully overscan

I will prove it............Make your WB NTSC.......
Adjust your 1084 monitor controls to fit the NTSC image centered on the 1084 with just a centimeter border all around as normal.....
then load a paint program........put it in HiresLaced NTSC 640 x 400

Draw some text with a big font...now put our Paint program in PAL mode............does the text look one iota clearer to you?  Nope.............UNLESS!  you readjust the controls on the back of your 1084 to fit the entire PAL image into the same space as the NTSC image..........something that no 1084 or TV does   automatically (Except PHILIP TVs)

Also those Philip CMKII's or whever they are called truly Support a Higher res PAL as they automatically shrink the image to the same space as NTSC  which means More Pixels per inch which equals Higher resolution

As a matter of fact.not even 1024 x 768 is  NOT higher resolution....unless all those pixels are squeezed to fit the 640 x 400 area. Otherwise its just 640 x 480 with autoscroll and severe overscan :-)

So in other words...........all PAL mode is on a 1084 is NTSC with top and bottom overscan which you dont see unless you adjust your 1084 monitor............otherwise its just cut off info.

Maybe you dont notice this because maybe your Amiga has the jumper in PAL mode and maybe that makes it True PAL mode (Which probably squeezes all the pixels in the NTSC area or the Viewable monitor area..but NTSC 1200's or 600's or 500's  dont do this. Never seen one that does, unless one has a Magnavox RGB monitor (USA)  or those PHILIPS CMKII or whatever (UK) which adjusts the image to fit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok I guess I can make a secret -NTSC switch 4 u.
It will force NTSC mode and activate AUTOSCROLL. That should be easy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow! that would be nice...........Im sure other American users here would appreciate that :-)

---------------------------------------------------------
But don't you have a 1084S monitor?
They are 100% PAL/NTSC compatible.
------------------------------------------------------

.........I have had many 1084 and 1084s Monitors........none of them really support PAL...........they display it, but you have to readjust the controls to fit the image.

But I do have a Magnovox RGB monitor (Made for Amiga) that shrinks the Image..so I can truly view PAL.............but since I have a SuperGenSX connected at all times.......I prefer NTSC, Plus I like to take my Amiga with me to places, and just wished everything ran or at least also worked in NTSC.

-------------------------------------------------------------
When you get it working I would be very interested to learn what is the very first spell that a newb casts? Thanx!
------------------------------------------------------------------

Hehe, sure will, I have never really played games of this type much, but your game looks cool and tempting :-)

I used to use NTCS instead of PAL for workbench becase it have Higher Refresh rate, I despise flicker :)
Hate it when I visit a friend and they have a higher resolution on their PC than they should, 1600x1200 flickers at 60Hz and they stil use it and don't notice uhrg....
Then again maybe its just my eyes :)

Well PAL is higher res than NTSC but flickers more.  Some NTSC Commodore monitors would not auto size the PAL screen and had to be manually set to display it correctly.  I believe the boxy 1084 monitors and Magnovox RGB80 do this fine, but the other ones do not, even the 1084D1/D2.  :(

WOW! That means I wasted all that cash on Graphics cards and stuff and I could have just used a Spectrum all this time..............Jesus man resolution is RELATIVE to the screen size! PAL is higher res than NTSC (Never The Same Colour) AND NO AMOUNT OF fiddling with your overscan will change it. :rtfm:
