Title: Amiga 1200 internet access...
Post by: Homo-AGA on November 16, 2005, 10:54:53 PM
Hi to all out there!

First of all since the winter is back, I wish to express the feeling that I am cold. The second thing that I would like to say is that I am in search of a job since it's been some time since I finished uni, and throughout all this endless spare time I decided to devote it on my Amiga passion. Or perhaps it is just one of my flashback/nostalgia periods. My A500 is back home, I am here stuck with a A600 with a faulty drive, and recently I bought an A1200 with 8MB extra memory and about a gig HD. Propably she(oops) will have to stay in the living room next to the TV to play a couple of games with (Goal! Sensi etc.), but WAIT!
When I woke up one morning with lots of snut in my eyes (not this snot, the other I mean), and before even taking the first sip of cofee, a strong cold breeze hit me and I said: WTF, perhaps we can have it to listen to some internet when we are cookin or taking a shower (the shower isn't far).
The guy that sold me the computer couldn't say if it was a Blizzard/Zorro etc. expansion card, but the main thing that I would like to ask you is what would I possibly need for it to keep it up and running for internet. Any software for streaming live radio?   :-?

Thanks for your time guys...

@ Homo

If it is an A1200 in its original case, it would certainly have no zorro expansions. It may have an accelerator in - tbh, one of the easiest ways to find out would be to look ;-)

If you have already a wifi setup, you could buy a orinoco pcmcia card and get connected, or if you have the money, buy a mediator+pci standard network card.

shall I presume that standard PCMCIA laptop network cards don't work? Because I have one for my old laptop. Thanks for your replies guys

@Homo-AGA:

Most PCMCIA network cards work as long as they arent 32-bit cardbus ones. Check out cnet.device (http://www.g-mb.de/cnet/index_e.html) and 3c589.device (http://aminet.net/package.php?package=hard/drivr/3c589.lha) for compatible cards.

You see why Iam sayign this is because I already have a 10?100 PCMCIA ethernet card that fitted in my toshiba laptop (Win98). But I guess we are talking about 32-bit bus architecture here huh?  :madashell: hmmm... and what i see as far as prices are concerned for one of these that fit to A1200/600 is not so encouraging...

@Homo-AGA

I think you'll find compatible cards for very reasonable prices on e-bay.  I've seen them go for ~$10-$30.  It seems pretty cheap to me.  Did you check to see if your card fits one of the types on the compatability list?  It could well be that your current card will be usable with the 1200.  Just depends on what you've got.

The guy that I bought the amiga from told me that the expansion board with 8Meg on, has a floating point for an extra microprocessor? Could it be that it IS an accelerator card? I really wouldn't like to spoil the case, because the system looks like new. By the way the hard disk drive is 880meg IBM  SCSI. More updates to come. Thanks!

What's the problem? It's only a matter of removing the cover in the bottem of the machine, and that can be done by using a coin or a screwdriver; no need to dismantle the whole machine.

I just checked it, but propably it isn't more than just a RAM module: A1200 8MEG RAM/FPU/ITC or something like that, and has a slot for a microprocessor.

Anyway, can I just use the current configuration with a PCMCIA ethernet card and WB 3.1 to have acess to internet, or would i possibly need more than that?

Yup, but it'll be slow
Lowest spec Amiga I've surfed with here is a '030@50mhz 16mb fast ram so I guess your '020 is ok and the fast ram but you can have a tea break during loading of webpages  :-D

if your exp. card allocates memory in a place which conflicts with the pcmcia port (which is usually the case if it's bigger than 4mb) than you may need to switch some jumpers on the mem exp card to lower it to 4mb to get it working with the pcmcia port.
