Saw an ad for Elite in an old Amiga Format. Is it worth a whirl if I can find a copy?
-
Why not. I never played original but its sequel Frontier was very
good.
-
It is strange but I never got the same thrill out of the Amiga versions as I got from the C64 version.
-
It was great fun back in the day, but I pulled it out
and played a bit last year and it was amazingly boring.
Buy stuff in one location, fly to the next avoiding or
blasting pirates (or maybe the police) manage to land
on spining space stations, sell your stuff, buy some more stuff,
and move on to the next location.
Balance cost, fuel, weapons, cargo, ship upgrades....
It was one of my favorites on the C64, but the amiga
release was more of the same with a few updates.
It could still be entertaining for you, but after all these years
with things like Doom, Quake, HalfLife Playstation1 and 2 games,
it just didn't hold the same coolness it once did.
This site had some info and screen shots...Lemon Games (http://www.lemonamiga.com/)
Just hit the GAMES tab and do a search for ELITE.
I'd say it's still worth a look it you havn't played before.

Man X3 looks amazing, if it has the same gameplay as frontier i may just have to buy it.
I hope the bug reports are exaggerated or at least now ironed out....

Or if you are so inclined, EVE Online (http://www.eve-online.com) is the online MMORPG successor. It feels and plays just like one would imagine Elite multiplayer should have.

If your've never played it before then it is awesome.
HOWEVER... one hell of a steep learning curve.
for example ...
When you finally get to a space station ... (You WILL have been killed several times over) you will promptly crash into the space station and die !!
Have patience young padawan!!
You will severly tempted to buy a docking computer as soon as you can afford it.
DON'T
You will learn how to dock flat out pretty soon. Use your credits to buy larger cargo space (means more money earnt each trip).
Oh... BIG tip..
Sell that front cannon pronto !!
Then rebuy it and have it fitted to the rear. You can then keep the baddies at arms length and kick ten bells outa them while your running away.
Coz they will almost certainly kill you.
Rear cannon is an absolute must for war against Thargoids as well !!
Have fun.
And remember .. Riedquat is hell
hehe
oh.. Learn how to use the radar too.

Try to find a nice close pair of planets with tech level 12, and tech level 4 respectively.
Then buy Blizzard in germany and sell in the UK.
Oh, hang on - that's ebay

It's great game and has a really cool, detailed manual that showed all the different spaceships you'll meet. The only thing that bugs me is that when you use the hyperdrive sometimes it says "Drive Malfunction" and you find yourself in this place with no stars and two Thargoids after you. I swear there is no way out of this.
-
Oh yes there is ....
But you gotta be good.
Only two ? You lucky bugger.
btw .. Hyperdrive malfunction is because those Thatgoids shot your hyperdrive to bits
tip
quit
start again from saved point
-
The docking computer always crashed my spaceship to those spinnning
space stations (Frontier).
-
@itix
Re Frontier autopilot bug:
Put your ship on speed 5 until you're at the space station, then speed 3 while docking.
No more crashing into space stations. Works when docking on a planetary port aswell.
-
@The_Editor
What, you can't handle a few thargoids in null-space? :-)
If you survive for long enough your hyperdrive repairs itself, but you generally have to kill a few thargoids first.
It helps to have a retro-thruster fitted: use your rear-laser for as long as you can (until they get too close), then turn around, retro - hey presto, they're back on the edge of your scanner. :-P

@ITIX
Yeah, you can sometimes crash into planets & stations using the autopilot in Frontier. The best way around this is to use maximum time advance as you'll dock safely every time.

But ofcourse you ALL know the greatest cheat in the game don't you (for Elite II that is)?
- pick up as much trash as you can(they pay you to take it) and then go into deap space where you can dump without being huranged by the police.
-When you go to dump the trash, don't click on the box, but JUST undernieth it.
-You'll hear all the sounds for jetisoning the trash, you'll see a free space apear but the amount won't go down on the amount of trash you have. Basiclly, the more you do this, the more free space you'll have on your ship...
I tried it and when I put down the game I had several Planetary Assault Lasers, Passenger cabin, etc. on a Imp!!!! (User BOOT_WB's Avatar ship is an Imp...)
Use sparingly as it DOES kill the feel of the total game, but is GREAT for taking agression out on pirates!!!!

i always had a pretty good cheat for elite. it was the take the disk out-scream at it- then play tetris manuver. it always worked pretty well but it never got me very far in the game.
ive used the very same cheat on quite a few games ive played. there is a variation on it that i used on timestalker for the sega genasis, its the take it out- throw it at the wall- then scream cause it dont work no more trick. that one isnt as fun because you can only do it once for real. after that its pretty redundant, plus i didnt have tetris for the sega

Hmm... I once went to Sol system, bought a cargo ship and transported some stuff from Tellus to nearby planet. I got very very rich and lost interest to the game. Heh...

Hi, you can download a copy from Ian Bell's own site. It's quite an interesting wee site.
Find it here (http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/sixty8K/index.htm)
Ironically it's a cracked version of the game. You can download versions for various formats.
Enjoy.
