Title: Large Hardrives .. ( an Opinion poll )
Post by: melott on November 06, 2005, 04:36:13 PM
I'm wondering why so many ppl seem to want these
large HD's (20, 30, 80 gig).
I understand it on the PC with all the bloated
software but not on the Amiga unless you're doing Video.

I have a 3.2 gig as my main (internal) drive and a 9 gig
external (less than 25% full) for data backup (files are
in compressed form).
The only reason I have the external drive is I lost all
my data (files) a few years ago because I didn't have a
second 'backup' drive. Any drive under 4 gigs would serve
quite well for this.

Unless you are running OS 3.5 or 3.9, it is a hassle
to get these larger than 4 gig  drives working.

My question is ...."Why do you want to"

I have almost every piece of software I own on the external
drive and still have a 'TON' of room.

Just curious  :-)

4gigs? I only have a 800mb seagate drive connected to my A1200.  :-D

Most I ever used was a 1.4gig quantum harddrive.

I think the reason why most people use larger hard drives is to store music, movies, or maybe large amount of picture files? Even then, I have a heck of a time filling up my PC with music since I have all the ones I listen to, and barely fills up 1.2gigs.  :-)

I didn't want a large HD - I wanted a fast one. Try finding a 7200 RPM or 5400 RPM 4Gb harddrive. The smallest they make now is 40 Gb, so that's what I got. Everything I've got - including 1Gb of digital music - fits in 4Gb.

If I switch to Compact Flash, I'll just get a couple 4Gb ones. (but by that time, the minimum might be 40Gb ;-) )

I have a 120GB HD in my A4000, and a 40GB in my A1200.  If they made new cheap drives with low capacities then I could use a 8GB in the A1200 and a 20GB in the A4000.  But, using an old drive is a liability and usually not cost effective.

@Mr_500

I'm using a Quantum FireBall 3.2 gig 7200 rpm 50 pin SCSI.
Its a fast drive, under 4 gigs and very Amiga friendly.
IMHO the best drive ever made (for Amiga).
And they're usually cheap on EBay (around $10.00 or $15.00).

I was talking about 2.5" IDE. If I could find a 4Gb 7200 RPM 2.5" IDE HD for $10 to $15, I'd jump on it faster than a greased pig shot out of a cannon.

Well, Like you saw, it's the *data* that takes the space. I got by with a 40mB HD on my Amiga for years. Heck, I even used a RAD: disk without a HD at all. Even now, it only has a 500mB internal and a 1 gig external, practically empty most of the time.
But if I put my data over there, I could probably fill up most of a 100GB drive. Music files, old radio shows in mp3, pictures, animations, video captures, all those scanned in Amiga magazines :-) saved web pages... it builds up quickly. Now, I could (and do) keep that stuff on CDR, but it's no substitute to having it all accessible in one place.

and why not? and if you want FASTER hdds, then buy the largest you can get, because it has higher data density and its gotta be faster.
I could think of several reasons why people want more and more HDDs and bandwidth like: dms(or adf), iso, ipf, avi, mp3.

BTW, Amiga fans are the only ones that really know how to appreciate HDD space because of 'FDD only' A500..

Well, you said it: video.

My Pegasos II has 120GB + 200GB (total 98% used), and Pegasos I 80GB + 400GB + 400GB (total 23% used).

Another use for the large HDD: backups. Using HDD for backups is great, as the speed is much better than any tape or other methods. Also HDDs are so cheap now it actually is cheaper in total.
