Title: Speed
Post by: Managarm on November 04, 2005, 06:46:10 PM
I've got an A1200 with an '030 accelerator. I've seen an '040 for sale on Ebay and was wondering whetherthe spped increase was all that significant. Should I hold out for an '060 or a PPC? (although I think the latter may be a wee bit too expensive.)

I can't speak from actual test numbers, but most opinions I have heard said that the 040 at a similar clock speed is about twice as fast as the same clock speed 030.  Wait five minutes and someone here will correct me if I am wrong.

thanks for getting back to me. cool that's pretty impressive, shows that Mhz isn't everything. I may have to bid on it. I've finally got enough money to get the internet. I want broadband and so the modem will be attached to one of my PCs. Would I be able to browse the web on my Amiga if I get one of those ethernet cards and crossover cables that are available on Ebay? I know I'll need AmiTCP, MUI, a browser and a lot of patience but is there anything else?

I'd suggest waiting for an 060. It's a bit faster, but the chip is also cooler and is less of a strain on the power supply.

Internet-wise, you're all set. TCP stack and a compatible PCMCIA card is all you need (browser would be good too,). Check Aminet for compatibility on 3com and cnet drivers.

Thankyou. The bit about power supplies has got me worried. I'm running it off my A500+ brick as I believe it's more powerful than the A1200 one. I have a hard drive, accelerator and external floppy running off it. How close to it's limit am I?

P.S I've been promoted from Too Much Caffeine to Technoid. Yaay!

Youll be fine with the psu! A pcmcia card is possible to get cheap at ebay these days ! (check cnet drivers on aminet).

you should go for a 060... a 040 will only bring you problems..

Cool, what about if by some miracle I can get a cheap PPC. Will the brick be near breaking point?

A BlizzardPPC (especially the 68040 version) with memory and a harddisk on the internal ide header is way too much for even an A500 supply.  It really needs to go in a tower. Having said that, you'd do okay probably in the original desktop with a 603e+ board with a 68060 and using an external scsi harddrive instead of the internal controller.
