Title: A1200+Blizzard 1240@040 crashes on boot when 68040.library is present
Post by: MarkAshley on October 24, 2005, 10:22:18 PM
I've got an A1200 with a Blizzard 1240@040 with 32Mb of RAM. The system works fine as long as 68040.library isn't present in libs:. If I copy the library then setpatch runs and the system reboots, then the it hangs on setpatch when the system next starts up.

I've tried various versions of 68040.library, old and new, and also installed Boing Bags 1 and 2 for OS3.9.

If I cold boot with no startup-sequence, then type cpu I get the following:

System: 68040 (INST: Cache Burst) (DATA: NoCache NoBurst)

Any ideas?

Which 68040.library version are you using? v44.x??  I believe you need to have Phase 5's version installed; though I could be wrong about that.  Try renaming the commodore 68040.library 68040old.library and then install the Phase 5 68040.library in LIBS:

There was no version installed initially. I have tried 44.2 from the 3.9 CD, 44.1 from the floppy that came with the accellerator, and biz/p5/68050-V44_3.lha from Aminet (which also containts a version of 68040.library, though I'm not sure which). All of these have produced the same results.

Matthew from Amigakit has also sent me various other version, none of which have worked.  :-(

Try version 46.5 from here: http://powerup.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=13
or version 46.13 from here: http://grex.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=15

The libs on Aminet are very old.

Bye,
Thomas

Oops, didn't read all of your post.

I'd suggest to boot from the Install3.1 disk (or Install3.0, whichever you have). It has the original 68040.library on it and should work. Then install OS3.1 on the HDD and copy the latest 68040.library to it. Boot from HDD. Now create an OS3.9 emergency disk. Check that the 68040.library has been copied to the disk. Now boot from the emergency disk.

If everything up to here worked, you should be able to install OS3.9 from scratch. The 68040.library from the emergency disk should automatically be installed, too.

If you have still problems, even with 3.1, then it's probably a hardware problem because it only causes problems, when the 68040 is running at full speed. Perhaps a faulty RAM chip.

Bye,
Thomas

I already have a 3.9 Emergency Boot Disk. Can I just copy the 68040.library from Install3.1 to that disk, boot from it, then install 3.9? Or do I really need to install 3.1 first and create a new 3.9 Emergency Disk?

Thanks
Mark

Hello again Thomas

I've just booted from an Install 3.1 disk with 68040.library and it did the same thing. I've been speaking to Matthew at amigakit and it sounds like it's either a bad card or an incompatibility with my (aparrently problematic) rev. 2B A1200 motherboard. I'm sending the card back to Matthew for testing.

Thanks
Mark
