Title: Voodoo5 vs. Voodoo3
Post by: J-Golden on October 11, 2005, 09:56:46 PM
So, from what I gather, the Voodoo 5 that I have is good only for braging rights as the 2nd chip (and half the memory) are not used.

1) Will this ever change?

2) Is Elbox making drivers that will use the second chip?

4) are there any other options that the VD5 offers that the VD3 does not?

5) Would I be better off selling the VD5 and getting a 3 for better power consumption and quieter running?

Curiously,
J-Golden

I like the fact that you skipped question no. 3 ;-)

A quick answer would be

1) Hardly
2) Hardly
4) No
5) Yes

i cant claim to be an expert on this although i have used both in pcs and checked into useing either with my 3000 if i got a mediator for it. but here goes:

1:possibly if enough people were to request it

2:not that i know of

3:yes but not that the drivers support

5:vd5 works fine if you have one id keep it. if the power and fan are really objectionable and you got a line on a vd3 go for it.

I'd say keep Voodoo5, and try to silence it with quieter fans. There ain't much difference with speed at all, but the main differencies are that noise, and the following thing I'll paste here - it is my old reply to similar question in 2003:

There might be little difference performance wise between V3 and V5. However, there is one difference that I think makes Voodoo 5 more desirable.

You may well know, that Voodoo 3 supports only 16bit colors with 3D, while Voodoo 4 and 5 can use 32bit color screenmodes with 3D. With Voodoo3 you can't run for example Quake2 in window in 32bit Workbench. So you have to use "only" 16bit desktop if you wan't to watch demos/play (3D) games  (in windows). This limitation makes also impossible to use your tv-card in a window (at the same time) with a game/demo on window too, 16bit is just not enough (without color corruption).

I changed my v3 to a v5 and is really pleased.
With v3 and my 1280*1024 screens it took a second or more
to switch between them, this doesn´t feel like amiga, this should
be lightning-fast. And with v5 it is no delay at all. If I use
screens with diffrent resolutions there might be some delay still though.
I know I wouldn´t switch back to voodoo3 anyway.
I havn´t noticed any improvement in performane though, but I didn´t expect
that either, I wanted more graphics memory and got it :)

32MB RTG memory instead of 16MB must also be a plus in using the Voodoo 5

There is no question 3, so he skipted to question 4  :-)
