Hi,
As some of you may have noticed, I've been online a bit more frequently of late. That's partially down to the fact that I'm wiped out with a really bad cold that has floored me since Friday and I can't seem to do anything else just now.
Seeing as I am here, what do you guys use to help shift the lurgey? All suggestions welcome, but for me personally, booze is out of the question :-)
Cheers...

to relieve congestion drink hot tea with lemon or honey
cold or flue Remedies ( Hydrogen Peroxide} (http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_coldsf.htm)
-
Hydrogen Peroxide ey? Alas I don't have any handy right now :-)
-
Alkalol (http://www.elydrugs.com/pages/alkalol.htm)
clean those "mucosal lining of the mouth and throat" and you will never have a cold again.
Nasal Irrigations and Oral Rinses (http://www.doctorhoffman.com/ydouche.htm)
years ago my mothers doctor suggested this and for people with especially sensative sinuses it's great. and for people like me it works like a charm. squirt a little up your nose when you THINK you might be starting to drip, and WHAM! all better.
-
Being genetically semi-geordie, things like multiple broken bones, severed limbs and other such trauma etc never really faze me, but I always seem to get bad colds  I guess I am just susceptible.
I'll look into this stuff if it is half as good as you say it is :-D
-
Ah, but we need more info, my good man. It's like a hardware problem, yes? So post your configuration, man!!
What sort of flu is it? Is it the rheumy-eyed spluttering and gobbing up of lung-oysters? Or is it the dastardly throbbing sinus-type ache that makes your head feel like a cement-mixer and gives you that irritating sensation as if maggots are chewing on your optical nerves?
You tell me your symptoms, and Uncle X-ray guarantees a solution!!
-
Well, lets see.
First I had naught but a sore throat and a bit of a blocked nose. Not so bad but the throat was unusually sore, I don't normally notice them.
Within a few hours I had an invisible torniquet of steel tightening around my temples that made it feel as if my eyes would burst out of their sockets from the building pressure of that and whatever was brewing in the sinuses.
The initial symptoms have subsided a bit (throat is fine now), but I am left with a heavy cough, aching chest, still blocked nose and a headache that by normal standards is pretty heavy, although paracetamol seems to be keeping that under control.
Oh, and I've barely slept as a result of either blowing my nose all night or coughing my guts up the following night.
-
Ahhhh, okay.
Firstly, for those of you who may in future be heading for such an ordeal, may I suggest that action is taken upon the first detection of a sore throat. And by action I mean Tyrozets. (http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/category_1347_tyrozets.html)
Those are the best throat pills in the world. They are antibacterial, antifungal and have a topical anaesthetic. And they are cheap too. That would have kicked the nonsense on the arse before it got into your lower airways.
Well, it is a difficult scene now. You have the lung oysters and you also have sneeble-greeber's-nose. You'll need an expectorant syrup like Sudafed. (http://www.mypharmacy.co.uk/medicines/medicines/s/sudafed/sudafed_expectorant.htm)
There is not much else you can do. Of course you should be eating regularly (no fasting) and you should be drinking regularly otherwise you aren't going to shake it. So on medical grounds you must cut the fasting, that's what is making this cold worse.
If you don't listen I'll have to put a call in to Lily the Pink and she'll be round your house with her Fantastic Flu Fighting Enema Apparatus (tm) so don't mess about, lad. :-P
-
222 w/Codeine, Sudafed, and Benydryl.

drat! :-/

I took Sudafed earlier this year and suffered one of the known side effects - nightmares.
And they were really horrible ones too :-(
-
At least you sweat it out then..

You'll be relieved to hear that I haven't fasted during this time except for the day the initial symptoms took hold (was halfway through the day by then).
-
Sweating it out is the best solution if you can't drink booze.
I can think of something we can all do in bed (and all have done since the age of 13) that will make you sweat buckets!

@X-Ray
BTW, I'd just like to say thanks for "lung oysters". That's been added to the old term collection :-D
-
@ Karlos
I will pass your appreciation to the female radiographer who taught me that one. The X-ray girls have plied me with many a nefarious wink and a facetious remark and their capacity for high jinks is legendary. They are altogether a curious bunch. I owe them credit for sneeble-greeber and lung-oyster (and many unrepeatable terms too) :-)

Mix one part fine Jamaican rum, one part sweet Cognac, and three parts of tea. Warm it up and drink it, and then go to bed.
I'm not sure it goes weel with Ramadan, tho'. :-)

I wanted to say hot citron lemonade with a bit fresh citron juice, a good amount of sweet cognac or 'beerenburger' (the latter gives a fresher taste) a bit cinnamon and a bit brown sugar...
but Karlos stated 'no booze' :-/
-
Well folks, I am bouncing right back today. I seem to have produced a hell of a harvest of the old lung oysters though. I get a fresh batch break free with every hearty laugh I get here :-)
Cheers :-)

My friends wife introduced me to a mix of hot milk, honey and homemade slivovice. It doesn't make your cold any better, but you don't give a damn about it. :-)
Glad to see you're feeling better Karlos.. hope it wasn't as bad as my last cold, when I coughed so hard I burst blood vessels in the whites of my eyes and they went completely blood red..got called Satan down the pub for ages after that

Milk is bad for a sore throat, and slime and so.

So you couldn't intimidate the bar staff with the "your soul or a free pint" line?
