My Amiga 500 power supply just died for no apparent reason. I've got my own bench and I've cracked the ps case open, don't see anything apparent, no visible signs of trouble. Fuse is good. I've never worked on one of these before and I'm not seeing any schematics for the power supply itself.
Has anyone else had a power supply just die? Any sites with info or help in fixing this or diagnosing which component went out?

Hi,
Unless you are desperate to use a Miggy PSU, I would suggest you find an old AT PSU from a PC , AT type supplies are worth nothing in the PC world nowadays..
but run amigas with loads to spare..
They are what's in a Goliath Amiga supply.
You can get them from most old slow PC's, from a dump or whatever, ranging from 90watts up to 250watt, any will do, if you can find one with a mains switch built in even better..
ATX PSU's can be used but are more of a pain to modify.
If its got a standard On/off switch either built in or on a cable then its an AT supply.
Easy to mod as long as you definately have clue about wiring and soldering.. as theres a few high voltages in these.

Thats what i did with my a3000. I used an atx powersupply. I didnt bother to soleranything or make a connector... I just cut the atx connector with a saw and plugged in each wire. A picture is here:

@Koaftder - the A3000 uses an AT powersupply anyhow, so long as you stick to the color coding, nothing should be wrong there...

Apart from the fact that I never enjoyed any apprenticeships in electrotechnics and therefore I always confuse stuff like Volt, Ampere, Ohm ect, I assume that the amount of Ampere is also very important (not just connecting the +5, -5, +12, -12 and GRD cables properly). As far as I know an AT or ATX PSUs got a bit more Ampere... or am I wrong?
Maybe someone knows a bit more about this kind of magic, before I send my A500 straight to the pearly gates of Amiga Heaven...

If you look at the link I gave above, you will see that hooking up a AT-PC style PSU is good and sound/safe...
I have put my A1200 (uses the exact same PSU as a A500, less wattage) into a Tower case using a 300W AT PSU, to power the MOBO, 3 HD's, CD-ROM, and a Floppy... and it is kicking without any problem...
