Title: Does a scandoubler do what I think it does?
Post by: MarkAshley on October 01, 2005, 09:36:59 PM
I'm just getting back in to the Amiga after a long absence. I've bought an A1200 from eBay and ordered a tower from Eyetech. I plan on adding an 060 accellerator, a Mediator PCI bus, and PCI Voodoo and Ethernet cards.

I want to be able to display the Amiga's RGB signal on the same VGA monitor as the Voodoo. Am I correct in thinking that a scandoubler will allow me to do this?

Thanks
Mark

Yes, you are right.

All you need to display the native Amiga display modes in a
VGA monitor is a Scandoubler.

Unfortunately it's not a simple task to find one (at least at a suitable price) these days.

Regards,
Marcelo.

Check out this thread - someone is currently selling one on eBay.  Ain't cheap, though, £50 at the mo.

Edit:

The link would have been useful :-)

Unfortunately you need an external monitor switcher as well because the voodoo card doesn't have an input socket for native displays. You have to manually switch between displays...

...unless of course your monitor has dual inputs... I'd REALLY like to see someone do this! That'd just be awesome. I would, but I'm a dirt-poor {bleep}.

Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate your help. Have found a ScanDoubler for sale at SoftHut, here:

http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=catalog/hardware/accelerators/apollo_scandoublers.html&cart_id=7203021_5810

Would this do the trick?

Cheers
Mark

True, not cheap, but still cheaper than most external scandoublers go at Ebay ...

Check this link out to all the scandoublers sold at Ebay at the moment (http://search-desc.benl.ebay.be/scandoubler-amiga_W0QQamp;sspagenameZhQ3ahQ3aadvsearchQ3aBENLQQcatrefZC5QQfbdZ1QQfclZ3QQfposZ3740QQfromZR6QQfrppZ50QQfsclZ1QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfssZ0QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQftsZ2QQnojsprZyQQpfidZ0QQsacatZQ2d1QQsacqyopZgeQQsacurZ0QQsadisZ200QQsalicZQ2d15QQsaslopZ1QQsasltZ2QQsofocusZbs)

Yes they are very expensive on eBay, even more than they are brand new

I've just had a GREAT idea... I think :)   The Mediator supports TV Cards, right? So I'm assuming there is software available that will let me watch TV on the Voodoo card, also connected to the Mediator? So why not plug the Amiga's 15KHz TV Output in to the TV Card input and play my games in a window on Workbench? Would that work?

Edit:
Have a look at this...

yes that would work it is a verry common thing to do
but hence you vould be better of using the composite output to the composite in the tvcard
adonay :-D

Wicked  :-D

Just saved myself a lot of hassel with monitor switchboxes and stuff, as well as the expense of a scandoubler :D :D :D :D :D

Obiously this won't work with games I have to boot from floppy as the TV Card won't work, but that's OK I'lll just use WHDLoad or JST.

Man it's good to back with the Amiga, bringing back so many memories, and I feel like a kid in a sweet shop with all this new hardware!!!

Thanks a million guys :) :) :)

Eyetech still sells them:

This is an internal one, but still very expensive

I checked with Softhut not long ago and they didn't have any in stock. Something about a part being unavailable just now. I  asked to be notified when they come in and hopefully they will. Or else I'll have to patrol the egarbage bins for an ancient but functional NEC3D or something like that.

I have actually managed to find a Multisync monitor for sale so I think I'll go for that. It syncs from 15 - 40, so should be able to handle the miggy graphics and thhe Voodoo too.

Yay!!!   :-)  :-)  :-)

What I would like to see is a newly produced internal scandoubler for the A1200 which outputs AGA correctly, since there is none that does at the moment.

But that will of course never happen.

I'm almost thinking of selling it off... since even though I get a much sharper picture on my ordinary monitor when running through the scandoubler than when running with a RGB-scart connected to my 1084, I at least with the 1084 can see AGA in its full glory. And actually I do like the scanlines... it looks prettier... less old PC... =)
