Title: Cheap external scan-doubler on eBay
Post by: x56h34 on September 28, 2005, 08:58:43 PM
It's one of those eBay auctions (http://cgi.ebay.com/External-scandoubler-tested-on-Amiga-1200_W0QQitemZ5245748949QQcategoryZ4598QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) that get your hopes up and then immediately piss you off as soon as you click on the link for several reasons.

- it's not really a scan-doubler
- huge pictures unnecessarily load right away without warning
- no offense effy, but after 400+ feedback earned, you finally need to learn to create thumbnails in your description.

It's just one of those composite to VGA converters which can be found for ~20USD at electronics stores. It's not actually anything near the quality of RGB video to VGA conversion.

But, it is a scan doubler.

I guess it is technically, but I think that everyone expects to see an actual Amiga scan-doubler after reading the auction's title, and then when you realize that it's just a composite to VGA converter, it's kind of a downer.

x56h34 : no offense but I can not write html and therefor don´t know how to create a link where you can click on to see a bigger picture, still need to find somebody to teach me. I tried the Ebay lister that allows to load big pictures but shows small versions of it that can be made larger by clicking on them, but the downside is that only the first picture is free and that every other picture costs extra, and it´s not really cheap. That´s why I use the editor that allows me to use pictures stored at my webspace. I have tried to use smaller pictures in THIS Blizzard 1240 / 40 (http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8700134087&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1) auction but I don´t think the pictures are big enough to see how much Ram is in DirOpus. Can you see it ???
I have searched Ebay for this scandoubler in the US like you meantionned and it´s true that it´s under 25 USD, with shipping costs at 10 USD inside the US and Canada, which is where you live. But can you find out how much it would cost to have it sent to Europe ??? The things I have bought in the past in the USA were sent with FedEx with insurance and tracking, without asking me which option I preferred. Meaning that the shipping costs were often between 40 and 50 USD, much more than the price I had bid for the object ... you seem to live on the good side of the ocean to do electronic deals. Remember that Europe is in several cases the "old" continent

About the scandoubler, I did clearly not write that it is an Amiga scandoubler, only that it is a scandoubler that also works for Amiga and on Playstations and other consoles. I thought I had it written down clear enough.

Let me teach you then!

*a href="(source, for instance http://www.amiga.org/picture1.jpg)" target=_blank** Picture 1 */a**

Replace * with < and replace ** with >

Anything to get rid of those horrible big pictures.

-EDIT- Argh, crap, the tags are picked up no matter what I put in front.

Actually, I have a cable modem and quite like the large images :)  BTW, how is the flicker with that scan doubler? I just bought something similar and am wondering what to expect. Does it remove flicker in hires lace?  Have you tested it with s-video?

I did not find any for under $25 (new).  I believe mine was in the $40 range and cost me $50 after it was shipped.

thanks

Forget the flicker fixing, it doesn´t do it !!!!!!! It works acceptable in Pal Hires but I wouldn´t dare to test Super72. Tried Super Hires but the picture was not so great at all, and when I tried the Lace thing I got burning eyes of it   The idea is that it is a cheap way to get your Amiga connected to a vga monitor, but far from the quality of the expensive Amiga scandoublers !!!!
