Title: A1200 HD will not work!
Post by: Amiduffer on September 27, 2005, 02:51:09 AM
Hope someone can help.

I purchased 3.1 rom chips for my 1200, so I could upgrade to OS3.5, but, then the cable for my HD fried, and now, the ami will boot up with floppies ok, but if I hook up a HD, the screen stays blank, and you hear an awful high pitched squeel. What's your diagnosis?

@Amiduffer

A: you fried your HD

B: You fried the IDE controller, (if thats possible) and your HD

For your sake i hope its A:

C: you're plugging the cable the other way around

D: If you have done that then id say your IDE port definetly
   is fried.

Sounds like the harddrive is dead, physical head crash or similar (heads against disks would cause this annoying noise, and also create an extra load on the power leads in the 44-pin 2.5" IDE-cable, possibly causing it to melt).

Try a new harddrive, and throw the dead one away immediately.

Well, I guess it's the IDE controller that's dead.

I did get a new HD and cable, and it still does the horrible noise.

Can anyone point out where the IDE controller is, and how to fix it, if possible?

Is there any reason nobody answers the Telephone at Software Hut or Mr. Hardware?

Well the A1200 has no real IDE controller AFAIK, the CPU (or one of the custom chips) does all the communication with the drive, so if it is something fried on the board, I would think  it's one of the smaller components...  I wouldn't expect anything to work if you'd damaged the CPU and/or a custom chip.

I'd look into the PSU as someone already mentioned as well, they can squeal if things get shorted sometimes.

Good Luck!

Software Hut has recently moved - They may have a new phone number. Have you checked the web sight? I've dealt with them recently, so they should be working.

What is a PSU, and where is it located?

The sound, as far as I can tell, is coming from the left side of the A1200.

The PSU is the (external) power supply (Power Supply Unit).
If you hear the squealing from inside the machine though, it does sound like *something* is not happy in there...  possibly something near the IDE connector.

I don't mean to ask dumb questions, but I'm going to just in case:

Are you making sure not to slide the cable over the seperate 4 pins off to one side? Are you sure the cable isn't plugged in with hard drive upside down (some drives have connector upside down)? Did you make sure you aligned it and didn't "miss" two pins on either side?

Sorry to hear you think you might have killed the ide port.    I feel your pain.

Well, let's see, I've tried a few combinations, I booted from floppies, with, and without the Blizzard 040/50mhz with no problems. I tried booting with HDD and Blizzard, just to see if it's just lack of power from the stock A1200PSU, *squeal*, then just HDD and no Blizzard *squeal*. Yes, it isn't covering the 4 pins off to the side, I'm pretty sure it isn't upside down. What in particular, do you mean about "miss" two pins on either side??

Gad, I'd hate to lose this one!
